Abstract
Relative to other animal taxa, ecotoxicological studies on amphibians are scarce, even though amphibians are experiencing global declines and pollution has been identified as an important threat. Agricultural lands provide important habitats for many amphibians, but often these lands are contaminated with pesticides. The authors determined the acute toxicity, in terms of 96-h median lethal concentrations, of the carbamate pesticide methomyl on larvae of 3 Asian amphibian species, the Asian common toad (Duttaphrynus melanostictus), the brown tree frog (Polypedates megacephalus), and the marbled pygmy frog (Microhyla pulchra), at 5 different temperatures (15 °C, 20 °C, 25 °C, 30 °C, and 35 °C) to examine the relationships between temperature and toxicity. Significant interspecific variation in methomyl sensitivity and 2 distinct patterns of temperature-dependent toxicity were found. Because high proportions of malformation among the surviving tadpoles were observed, a further test was carried out on the tree frog to determine effect concentrations using malformation as the endpoint. Concentrations as low as 1.4% of the corresponding 96-h median lethal concentrations at 25 °C were sufficient to cause malformation in 50% of the test population. As the toxicity of pesticides may be significantly amplified at higher temperatures, temperature effects should not be overlooked in ecotoxicological studies and derivation of safety limits in environmental risk assessment and management.

Abstract
Ecotoxicity tests are often conducted following standard methods, and thus carried out at a fixed water temperature under controlled laboratory conditions. Yet, toxicity of a chemical contaminant may vary in a temperature-dependent manner, depending on the physiology of the test organism and physicochemical properties of the chemical. Although an assessment factor of 10 (AF10) is commonly adopted to account for variability in toxicity data related to temperature in the development of water quality guidelines and/or ecological risk assessment, no one has ever rigorously assessed the appropriateness of AF10 to account for potential variation in temperature-dependent chemical toxicity to aquatic organisms. This study, therefore, aims to address this issue through a meta-analysis by comparing median lethal concentration data for nine chemicals (cadmium, copper, nickel, lead, silver, zinc, arsenic, selenium and DDT) on a range of freshwater ectothermic animal species at different temperatures, and to assess whether AF10 is under- or over-protective for tropical and temperate freshwater ecosystems. Our results reveal varying extents of interaction between temperature and different chemicals on organisms and the complexity of these interactions. Applying AF10 sufficiently protects 90% of the animal species tested over a range of temperatures for cadmium, copper, nickel, silver, zinc and DDT in the tropics, but it is insufficient to adequately encompass a larger temperature variation for most studied chemicals in temperate regions. It is therefore important to set specific AFs for different climatic zones in order to achieve the desired level of ecosystem protection.

Abstract
Cyclotrimerization of 1-phenyl-2-propyn-1-one in pressurized hot water gave 1,3,5-tribenzoylbenzene in one pot in 65 % yield after 7 min at 200 °C, or in 74 % yield after 60 min at 150 °C. The reaction did not take place in the absence of water, and added base promoted the reaction at 250 °C, suggesting a mechanism of three-consecutive Michael addition reactions. The reaction rates increased with temperature, but the yield of 1,3,5-tribenzoylbenzene decreased at the expense of formation of acetophenone as a side product at higher temperatures. p-Methyl and p-chloro-substituents on the phenyl ring retarded and enhanced the reaction, respectively. A mechanism involving the enol of benzoylacetaldehyde at a branching point of the pathway leading to 1,3,5-tribenzoylbenzene and acetophenone was suggested.

Abstract
It is well known that corrosion is the predominant mechanism for the deterioration of cast iron pipes, leading to the reduction of pipe capacity and ultimate collapse of the pipes. In order to assess the remaining service life of corroded cast iron pipes, it is imperative to understand the mechanisms of corrosion over a long term and to develop models for pipe deterioration. Although many studies have been carried out to determine the corrosion behavior of cast iron, little research has been undertaken to understand how cast iron pipes behave over a longer time scale than hours, days, or weeks. The present paper intends to fill the gap regarding the long-term corrosion behaviour of cast iron pipes in the absence of historical data. In this paper, a comprehensive experimental program is presented in which the corrosion behaviour of three exservice pipes was thoroughly examined in three simulated service environments. It has been found in the paper that localised corrosion is the primary form of corrosion of cast iron water pipes. It has also been found that the microstructure of cast irons is a key factor that affects the corrosion behaviour of cast iron pipes. The paper concludes that long-term tests on corrosion behaviour of cast iron pipes can help develop models for corrosion-induced deterioration of the pipes for use in predicting the remaining service life of the pipes.

Abstract
Well-defined molecular layers can be formed on the surface of nanocrystalline anatase TiO2 by photochemically grafting organic molecules bearing a terminal vinyl group. The molecular layers produced are shown to have minimal oxidation and are able to be patterned and uniformly grafted through optically thick nanocrystalline films. Stability tests show that the layers have excellent stability in deionized water at 80 degrees C, aqueous solutions at pH=1.0 and pH=10.3 at 65 degrees C, and acetonitrile for time scales approaching 1200 h. Degradation of the films in deionized water occurs using a AM1.5 full-spectrum solar simulator as an illumination source but is partially suppressed by filtering with a 400 nm UV blocking filter which blocks the above-bandgap light. A mechanism is proposed for the grafting reaction in which the surface hydroxyl groups trap photoexcited holes, facilitating reaction with the vinyl group.

Abstract
The revised multisite complexation (MUSIC) model of T. Hiemstra et al. (J. Colloid Interface Sci. 184, 680 (1996)) is the most thoroughly developed approach to date that explicitly considers the protonation behavior of the various types of hydroxyl groups known to exist on mineral surfaces. We have extended their revised MUSIC model to temperatures other than 25 degrees C to help rationalize the adsorption data we have been collecting for various metal oxides, including rutile and magnetite to 300 degrees C. Temperature-corrected MUSIC model A constants were calculated using a consistent set of solution protonation reactions with equilibrium constants that are reasonably well known as a function of temperature. A critical component of this approach was to incorporate an empirical correction factor that accounts for the observed decrease in cation hydration number with increasing temperature. This extension of the revised MUSIC model matches our experimentally determined pH of zero net proton charge pH values (pH(znpc)) for rutile to within 0.05 pH units between 25 and 250 degrees C and for magnetite within 0.2 pH units between 50 and 290 degrees C. Moreover, combining the MUSIC-model-derived surface protonation constants with the basic Stern description of electrical double-layer structure results in a good fit to our experimental rutile surface protonation data for all conditions investigated (25 to 250 degrees C, and 0.03 to 1.0 m NaCl or tetramethylammonium chloride media). Consequently, this approach should be useful in other instances where it is necessary to describe and/or predict the adsorption behavior of metal oxide surfaces over a wide temperature range.
