Structural, Spectroscopic, and Thermal Decomposition Features of [Carbonatotetraamminecobalt(III)] Iodide—Insight into the Simultaneous Solid-Phase Quasi-Intramolecular Redox Reactions

[κ2-O,O′-Carbonatotetraamminecobalt(III)] iodide, or [Co(NH3)4CO3]I, named in this paper as compound 1, was prepared and characterized comprehensively with spectroscopic (IR, Raman and UV) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. Compound 1 was orthorhombic, and isomorphous with the analogous bromide. The four ammonia ligands and the carbonate anion were coordinated to the central cobalt cation in a distorted octahedral geometry. The carbonate ion formed a four-membered symmetric planar chelate ring. The complex cations were bound to each other by N-H···O hydrogen bonds and formed zigzag sheets via an extended 2D hydrogen bond network. The complex cations and iodide ions were arranged into ion pairs and each cation bound its iodide pair through three hydrogen bonds. The thermal decomposition started with the oxidation of the iodide ion by CoIII in the solid phase resulting in [Co(NH3)4CO3] and I2. This intermediate CoII-complex in situ decomposed into Co3O4 and C-N bond containing intermediates. In inert atmosphere, CO or C-N bond containing compounds, and also, due to the in situ decomposition of CoCO3 intermediate, Co3O4 was formed. The quasi-intramolecular solid-phase redox reaction of [Co(NH3)4CO3] might have resulted in the formation of C-N bond containing compounds with substoichiometric release of ammonia and CO2 from compound 1. The C-N bond containing intermediates reduced Co3O4 into CoO and Co, whereas in oxygen-containing atmosphere, the end-product was Co3O4, even at 200 °C, and the endothermic ligand loss reaction coincided with the consecutive exothermic oxidation processes.

Large optical anisotropy-oriented construction of a carbonate-nitrate chloride compound as a potential ultraviolet birefringent material

The design of new birefringent materials is very significant owing to their indispensable role in modulating the polarization of light and is vital in laser technology. Herein, by applying a large optical anisotropy-oriented construction induced by a synergy effect of multiple anionic groups, a promising carbonate-nitrate chloride, Na₃Rb₆(CO₃)₃(NO₃)₂Cl·(H₂O)₆, has been designed and synthesized successfully by the solvent evaporation method and single crystals of centimeter size were obtained by the recrystallization method in aqueous solution. It crystallizes in the hexagonal P6₃/mcm space group, the RbO₉Cl polyhedra and the NaO₇ polyhedra construct a three-dimensional (3D) framework by sharing O or Cl atoms and trigonal plane units (CO₃ and NO₃). The transmittance spectrum based on a 1 mm thick single-crystal plate shows that its short UV cut-off edge is about 231 nm. And the refractive index differences (0.14 @ 546 nm) measured by using a polarizing microscope on the (101) crystal plane, proves that Na₃Rb₆(CO₃)₃(NO₃)₂Cl·(H₂O)₆ has a large birefringence, which has potential application in the solar blind ultraviolet region. The theoretical calculations reveal that the π-conjugated CO₃ and NO₃ groups are the main cause of the birefringence. It demonstrates that combining π-conjugated CO₃ and NO₃ groups in one structure is an extremely effective strategy to explore new UV birefringent crystals.

Tetra-ammine-(carbonato-κ(2) O,O')cobalt(III) nitrate: a powder X-ray diffraction study

Practical chemistry courses at universities very frequently propose the synthesis and characterization of [Co(CO₃)(NH₃)₄]NO₃, but this goal is never achieved since students only obtain the hemihydrated form. The anhydrous form can be prepared, however, and its structure is presented here. Similar to the hemihydrate form, the anhydrous phase contains the Co^III ion in an octahedral O₂N₄ coordination by a chelating carbonate group and four ammine ligands. The structure reveals an intricate array of N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds involving both the chelating and the non-chelating O atoms of the carbonate ligand as hydrogen-bond acceptors of the amine H atoms, which are also involved in hydrogen-bonding inter­actions with the nitrate O atoms. The structure of the anhydrous form is close to that of the hemihydrate phase, suggesting a probable topotactic reaction with relatively small rotations and translations of the [Co(CO₃)(NH₃)₄]⁺ and NO₃⁻ groups during the dehydration process, which produces an unusual volume increase of 4.3%.
