Checklist of The Monogenea (Platyhelminthes) Parasitic in Tunisian Aquatic Vertebrates

153 species of monogeneans have been recorded in Tunisian aquatic vertebrates (89 hosts). A list of these species with hosts is presented. A comparison of the Monogenea diversity off the coast of Tunisia with other regions of the Mediterranean Sea and the world is provided. The number of parasites depends on the number of hosts examined and their diversity in the region. This list shows that Monopisthocotylea is the richest group. The oncomiracidia larvae of monogeneans are small, ciliated, relatively slow-moving organisms with a limited free-swimming life. For example, the oncomiracidium of the skin parasiteEntobdello, soleaeis 250 µm in length, swims at a speed of 5 mm/sec and lives for about 24 h (Kearn, 1967a). Oncomiracidial survival is dependent on the larvae finding and attaching themselves to their specific fish hosts and selection pressure has been exerted on the timing of hatching of oncomiracidia and on their behaviour during their short freeswimming lives to enhance the chances of making this important contact.

Tracing ancient evolutionary divergence in parasites

For parasitic platyhelminths that generally lack a fossil record, there is little information on the pathways of morphological change during evolution. Polystomatid monogeneans are notable for their evolutionary diversification, having originated from ancestors on fish and radiated in parallel with tetrapod vertebrates over more than 425 million years (My). This study focuses on the genusPolystomoidesthat occurs almost worldwide on freshwater chelonian reptiles. Morphometric data show a major divergence in structural adaptations for attachment; this correlates with a dichotomy in micro-environmental conditions in habitats within the hosts. Species infecting the urinary tract have attachment organs with large hamuli and small suckers; species in the oro-nasal tract differ fundamentally, having small hamuli and large suckers. Zoogeographical and molecular evidence supports ancient separation of these site-specific clades: a new genus is proposed –Uropolystomoides– containing urinary tract species distinct fromPolystomoides sensu strictoin oro-nasal sites. Aside from differences in attachment adaptations, body plans have probably changed little over perhaps 150 My. This case contrasts markedly with polystomatids in other vertebrate groups where major morphological changes have evolved over much shorter timescales; the chelonian parasites show highly stable morphology across their global distribution over a long period of evolution, exemplifying ‘living fossils’.

Exceptional occurrences have fundamental interest in evolution relevant to understanding adaptations and origins. Monogeneans primarily infect aquatic lower vertebrates, i.e. fish, amphibians and chelonian reptiles, but there is a single instance of colonisation of a mammal: Oculotrema hippopotami Stunkard, 1924 infecting the eye of Hippopotamus amphibius Linnaeus. Its combination of systematic characters is amongst the most diverse in the Polystomatidae Gamble, 1896 and relationships are obscure. This study emphasises the primary significance of two features: the reinforcement of haptoral suckers with an internal skeleton and the pattern of ciliated cells on the oncomiracidium, especially the presence of conjoined cells. Closest relationships are with polystomatids infecting chelonians, specifically species of Polystomoides Ward, 1917 from the oral cavity/pharynx, or more likely (but with currently incomplete evidence) species of Neopolystoma Price, 1939 from the eye. Morphological characters of polystomoidines, all of which infect chelonians, appear to have remained relatively stable since at least the Jurassic (from zoogeographical evidence), but the highly derived characters of species of Oculotrema may have evolved during the comparatively short period (16 million years) since the Miocene origin of Hippopotaminae Gray. However, the initial host switch may plausibly have been to hippo ancestors, the anthracotheres, with similar semi-aquatic ecology and an Eocene origin (41 million years ago). Over the same time-scale, the oncomiracidial cell pattern remained closely comparable with that of presumed ancestors, emphasising its value in phylogenetic analyses.
