Effect of fluoride ions on the corrosion of aluminium in sulphuric acid and zinc electrolyte

Computational and solubility equilibrium experimental insight into Ca2+-fluoride complexation and their dissociation behaviors in aqueous solutions: implication for the association constant measured using fluoride ion selective electrodes

Although the Ca²⁺-F^- association is of great importance for aqueous environments and industrial systems containing F^-, as well as for defluorination processes, many details of the association solvation structures and behavior remain unclear. Herein, a combination of classical/ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory calculations was used to investigate the structure and hydration of CaF_x^2-x (x = 1, 2) and the association/dissociation behavior of Ca²⁺-F^- in aqueous CaF₂ solutions. The primary shell of Ca²⁺ is found to be very flexible in the association of Ca²⁺-F^-, with coordination numbers dynamically oscillating in the range of 6-9, with 6 and 7 being the most favorable. The calculations show that for CaF(H₂O)₁₄⁺, the contact ion pair (CIP) is more favorable and occurs with no energy barrier, whereas the formation of CaF₂(aq.) must overcome a ∼3.6 kJ mol^-1 energy barrier; moreover, the CIP and solvent shared ion pair (SSIP) dynamically coexist for CaF₂(H₂O)₁₄ in aqueous CaF₂ solutions. Calculations for the dissociation process of CaF(H₂O)₆⁺ show a dramatic energy increase going from SSIP to free Ca²⁺ and F^-, ascribed to the surprisingly long-range electrostatic attraction between Ca²⁺ and F^- rather than to special F⋯H interactions. The energy increase results in the estimated association constant of CaF⁺ being larger than that previously measured using fluoride ion selective electrodes. This is attributed to the fact that the latter value might correspond to the ligand reaction of free Ca²⁺ and F^- to form the Ca²⁺-F^- SSIP. The combination of these results with CaF_2(s) solubility measurements suggests that the higher-order Ca²⁺-F^- complexes are absent in aqueous CaF₂ solutions.

Experimental Study on the Dissolution Behavior of Calcium Fluoride

The presence of halogens has an adverse effect on the zinc extraction process through electrowinning, the last phase of the RLE (Roasting, Leaching and Electrowinning) zinc extraction route. Fluoride (F−) may be present as calcium fluoride (CaF2) and this is, for example, the case in double leached Waelz oxide (DLWO). Efficient removal of F− from primary and secondary raw materials for zinc extraction results in a simplified process and increases flexibility in the selection of raw materials. Understanding of the solubility behavior of pure CaF2 can give valuable information on treatment for maximized halogen removal. Dissolution of CaF2 was studied with the addition of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) and sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3). Dissolution studies were combined with thermodynamic calculations to understand the solubility behavior of CaF2 under different conditions. Results from the experiments and the thermodynamic calculations show that Na2CO3 and NaHCO3 have similar behavior if the pH is controlled at the same value. The available carbonate (CO32−) ion in the system limits the concentration of calcium (Ca2+) ion by precipitation of CaCO3, which enhances the dissolution of CaF2. At higher temperatures and pH, calcite, vaterite, and aragonite were formed and co-precipitation of CaF2 along with calcium carbonate (CaCO3) was observed. At lower temperatures and lower pH levels, only calcite and vaterite were formed and a coating by CaCO3 on CaF2 was found to hinder complete dissolution reaction. The results of this study indicate that the temperature along with the reagents used for the dissolution tests have a significant impact on the CaCO3 polymorph mixture (calcite, vaterite and aragonite) formation.

Water in Rechargeable Multivalent-Ion Batteries: An Electrochemical Pandora's Box

Multivalent-ion batteries built on water-based electrolytes represent energy storage at suitable price points, competitive performance, and enhanced safety. However, to comply with modern energy-density requirements, the battery must be reversible within an operating voltage window greater than 1.23 V or the electrochemical stability limits of free water. Taking advantage of its powerful solvation and catalytic activities, adding water to electrolyte preparations can unlock a wider gamut of liquid mixtures compared with strictly nonaqueous systems. However, a point-by-point sweep of all potential formulations is arduous and ineffective without some form of systematic rationalization. The present Review consolidates recent progress, pitfalls, limits, and insights critical to expediting aqueous electrolyte designs to boost multivalent-ion battery outputs.
