Literature review: dermal monitoring data for pesticide exposure assessment of farm workers

OBJECTIVE

To conduct a literature review to determine the types of information that existing dermal pesticide monitoring data could provide for future pesticide exposure assessment in occupational epidemiology.

METHODS

A systematic literature search was performed on eight online databases. Two screening phases with predetermined criteria identified the qualifying literature. Standard information and dermal pesticide monitoring data were recorded and summarized from each qualifying study to assess its usefulness for future pesticide exposure assessment.

RESULTS

A total of 31 farm studies qualified for review; task information was used to standardize all farm job(s) evaluated into 5 job groups: operators, applicators, mixer-loaders, field workers, and flaggers. When attempting to compare dermal exposure levels between studies, two types of variation were identified: (1) variation in study focus and reporting and 2) variation in exposure levels. The former variation type prevented exposure level comparisons between studies. Within studies, exposure levels were compared across body parts to identify that which had the highest measured exposure and to determine if results were similar in other studies that evaluated the same farm job. Using studies that measured exposure for multiple farm jobs, within study comparisons of total body exposure were performed to evaluate work factors.

CONCLUSION

Future dermal pesticide exposure monitoring studies should standardize reporting procedures, as suggested in this review, to allow for more extensive dermal data comparisons. Body parts with highest measured levels of dermal exposure were identified by farm job, along with work factors to be further investigated as potential dermal pesticide exposure determinants for farm workers.

Evaluation of a tractor cab using real-time aerosol counting instrumentation

Aerosol instrumentation was used to evaluate air infiltration into tractor cabs that are used to protect the agricultural worker during pesticide applications. Preliminary surveys were conducted on three different manufactured agriculture enclosures. The results of these preliminary surveys indicated that aerosols are entering the cab through leak sources or are being generated inside the cab. These results identified the need for in-depth field evaluations of tractor cabs to identify any leak sources. To evaluate the ability of tractor cabs to reduce operator air contaminant exposure, field evaluations were conducted on two tractor cabs. Specifically, we evaluated: 1) the particle size distribution and the effectiveness of the filter system; and 2) air infiltration into the cab. These evaluations were also conducted to demonstrate the ease and practicality of using optical particle counters to evaluate the ability of cabin filtration systems. Pesticide particle size distribution during an air blast spray operation was also evaluated during the study. The field tests were conducted on a John Deere 7000 series tractor cab (tractor manufacturer's cab) and a Nelson spraycab (retrofit cab). Both cabs were equipped with high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter media which were assumed to be 99.97 percent efficient at removing the test aerosol, atmospheric condensation nuclei. Thus, the major source of aerosols inside the cab was assumed to be leakage around filters at the seals. Using a portable dust monitor (PDM), the ratio of the outside to inside aerosol measurements was used to calculate a cab protection factor. During the evaluations, one PDM was placed inside the tractor cab (near the tractor operator) and one PDM was placed outside (near the air intake) to count particles. During the evaluations, the instruments were switched to prevent instrument bias from affecting the findings. The ratio of the two measurements (i.e., protection factor = outside concentration / inside concentration) was used to calculate how efficient the tractor cab was at removing aerosols. The John Deere cab was more than 99 percent efficient at removing aerosols larger than 3.0 microm in diameter and had protection factors greater than 260 for particles larger than 3.0 microm (indicated by the PDM results). The Nelson cab was more than 99 percent efficient at removing aerosols larger than 3.0 microm in diameter and had protection factors greater than 200 for particles larger than 3.0 microm (indicated by the PDM results). For aerosols smaller than 1.0 microm in diameter (indicated by a PortaCount Plus instrument), the John Deere cab provided a mean protection factor of 43 and the Nelson cab provided a mean protection factor of 16. The results from this study indicate that tractor cabs can be effective at removing different size aerosols depending on the seals and filters used with the enclosure. This study has also demonstrated the practical use of real-time aerosol counting instrumentation to evaluate the effectiveness of enclosures and to help identify leak sources. The method used in this study can be applied to various cabs used in different industries including agriculture, construction, and manufacturing.

Environmental equity and pesticide exposure

Although people of color and low-income groups bear a disproportionate share of the health risks from exposure to pesticides, research attention has been meager, and data on acute and chronic health effects related to their toxic exposures are generally lacking. Increased resources are needed both to study this issue and to mitigate problems already identified. People of color should be a major research focus, with priority on long-term effects, particularly cancer, neurodevelopmental and neurobehavioral effects, long-term neurological dysfunction, and reproductive outcome. Suitable populations at high risk that have not been studied include noncertified pesticide applicators and seasonal and migrant farm workers, including children.

Percutaneous absorption and dermal dose-cholinesterase response studies with parathion and carbaryl in the rat

Dermal dose-ChE response (toxicity) and percutaneous absorption of parathion and carbaryl were studied in the rat. Parathion was as toxic to young animals as it was to adults of the same sex and more toxic to adult females than to adult males. Carbaryl was nontoxic at administered dosages. In each percutaneous absorption study, [14C]parathion or [14C]carbaryl was applied to back skin (12.5-13.8 cm2) at 43.5 to 48 micrograms/cm2. Thirty-six rats were treated and three were killed at time intervals between 0.5 and 168 hr. The area of the skin which had been treated, plasma, heart, liver, kidneys, urine, feces, and the remaining carcass were analyzed for 14C. Recovery studies indicated that adult male and female rats, respectively, absorbed 59.2 and 57.0% of the applied parathion, while adult males absorbed 57.7% of the applied carbaryl. Parathion was lost from skin (t1/2, 28.6 hr) more rapidly than carbaryl (t1/2, 40.6 hr). Approximately 1.4 and 5.8%, respectively, of the applied parathion and carbaryl penetrated the skin within 1 hr and was available for absorption. Parathion was absorbed through skin of adult male and female rats, respectively, at rates of 0.33 and 0.49 micrograms hr-1 cm-2. Carbaryl was absorbed by male rats at the rate of 0.18 micrograms hr-1 cm-2. The half-lives for absorption of parathion by blood ranged between 0.38 and 2.1 hr, while elimination half-lives ranged between 28.6 and 39.5 hr. Carbaryl absorption and elimination half-lives were 1.26 and 67 hr, respectively.
