[Biogenic organochlorine compounds--occurrence, function and ecological relevance]

Screening of organic halogens and identification of chlorinated benzoic acids in carbonaceous meteorites

The occurrence of halogenated organic compounds measured as a sum parameter and the evidence of chlorinated benzoic acids in four carbonaceous meteorites (Cold Bokkeveld, Murray, Murchison and Orgueil) from four independent fall events is reported. After AOX (Adsorbable organic halogen) and EOX (Extractable organic halogen) screening to quantify organically bound halogens, chlorinated organic compounds were analyzed by gas chromatography. AOX concentrations varying from 124 to 209 microg Cl/g d.w. were observed in carbonaceous meteorites. Ion chromatographic analysis of the distribution of organically bound halogens performed on the Cold Bokkeveld meteorite revealed that chlorinated and brominated organic compounds were extractable, up to 70%, whereas only trace amounts of organofluorines could be extracted. Chlorinated benzoic acids have been identified in carbonaceous meteorite extracts. Their presence and concentrations raise the question concerning the origin of halogenated, especially chlorinated, organic compounds in primitive planetary matter.

Repellent and toxic effects of plant extracts on subterranean termites (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae)

The effects of four plant extract formulations on the orientation and survival of subterranean termites were tested. In choice experiments, extract-treated filter paper had a significantly repellent effect on groups of Reticulitermes santonensis De Feytaud, R. virginicus (Banks), Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki, and Schedorhinotermes intermedius Breinli. There was no species-specific difference in avoidance behavior toward the tested concentrations. No-choice experiments revealed toxic properties of all investigated extracts by contact or airborne compounds against R. santonensis. However, high termite mortality was only achieved by forced direct or forced indirect exposure to the plant material, Feeding deterrence or digestive toxicity could not be judged in these experiments. One of the extracts was efficiently used for soil treatments to protect a food substrate against R. santonenis infestation. Extract-treated barriers in the experiments did not affect mortality compared with control trials but prevented termites from penetrating treated soil.

Organochlorine compounds from a terrestrial higher plant: structures and origin of chlorinated orcinol derivatives from diseased bulbs of Lilium maximowiczii

Seven chlorine-containing orcinol derivatives (2-8) and orcinol (9) have been isolated from diseased bulbs of the edible lily Lilium maximowiczii, and their structures have been elucidated. Six of the chlorinated orcinol derivatives (2, 4-8) showed antifungal activity. Because organochlorine compounds are rare in terrestrial higher plants, their biosynthetic origin was examined. These compounds were shown to be induced in intact bulb scales by UV irradiation or by inoculation with the pathogenic fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lilii. Biosynthetic studies suggested that these "natural organochlorine pesticides" are produced by enzymatic chlorination of orcinol (9) with chloroperoxidase and hydrogen peroxide, which are both induced in the plant tissue under stress conditions.
