Breast Hypoplasia as a Complication of an Untreated Infantile Hemangioma

We report the case of a mixed infantile hemangioma (IH) involving the right breast that resulted in pronounced hypoplasia of the affected breast, which became apparent after breast development at puberty. No treatment had been performed in infancy or childhood. This case demonstrates that the presence of an IH may affect development of the mammary gland bud and that systemic therapy should be considered in an attempt to minimize this adverse sequela.

Hemangiomas revisited: the useful, the unusual and the new. Part 2: endangering hemangiomas and treatment

Hemangiomas, although benign tumors, can when located in particular regions threaten vital structures or in certain clinical circumstances be associated with other abnormalities, carrying significant morbidity and mortality. We review these endangering hemangiomas. We also discuss briefly the treatment with emphasis on the recent use of propranolol.

Cavernous haemangioma of the breast

Vascular tumours of the breast are rare and most can be classified as either angiosarcomas or haemangiomas. Cavernous haemangiomas are the most common form of mammary haemangioma. We describe a case with unilateral whole breast involvement without associated calcifications, studied with mammography, ultrasound and MRI.

[Cavernous hemangioma of the breast: a case report]

Cavernous hemangiomas of the breast are uncommon. Clinical diagnosis is rather difficult. Generally there are coincidental microscopic findings. We present a case of a 67-year-old woman which commenced as a 6 cm palpable mass of the right breast. The use of mammography, ultrasound and MRI facilitate diagnosis. Large surgical excision of the lesion was performed and histology allowed to find a cavernous hemangioma without cellular atypia.

Gadolinium-enhanced dynamic MRI of breast hemangioma

We describe a patient with hemangioma of the breast. The tumor showed an Ill-defined hypointense mass on T1-weighted imaging and hyperintense mass on T2-weighted imaging. After bolus gadolinium injection, the tumor showed heterogeneous enhancement in early phase and in the time-intensity an early intensive enhancement was followed by a plateau. This intensive enhancement in the early phase is not limited to breast carcinoma but can be found in breast hemangiomas as well.

Diagnosis and treatment of symptomatic breast masses in the pediatric population

Between 1980 and 1993, 74 children and adolescents were referred for surgical evaluation of palpable breast masses. Thirty-two were managed nonoperatively for unilateral thelarche (26), fibroadenoma (3), gynecomastia (2), or hemorrhagic cyst (1). The other 42 children had surgical intervention for giant or painful fibroadenomas (19), breast abscesses (5), painful gynecomastia (6), metastatic disease (4), or other conditions (8). No instances of primary breast malignancy were noted. Physical examination and minimal (selective) diagnostic testing can conserve health care dollars in cases of pediatric patients with breast masses.
