Sarcoma botryoides of the common bile duct: preoperative diagnosis by coronal CT and PTC

Extrahepatic biliary tract tumors are rare and among them rhabdomyosarcoma is most common. Rhabdomyosarcoma is a soft tissue malignant musculoskeletal tumor and is a very rare malignancy of the common bile duct in children. It usually presents as obstructive jaundice and/or pruritus. If there is no local invasion to the adjacent tissues, the radiological appearance of the tumor lesion is like a choledochal cyst. So the diagnosis is usually made at surgery or by preoperative biopsy. It is important to diagnose early and differentiate it from choledochal cyst and start treatment as early as possible for long time survival of the patient. This case report presented a case of a 10-year-old boy with recurrent onset of obstructive jaundice and fever preoperatively who was diagnosed as choledochal cyst and postoperatively as embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the common bile duct. After surgical resection and postoperative chemotherapy, the child had a good prognosis. So it is crucial to know that this rare tumor can mimic congenital choledochal cyst and it should be considered in the differential diagnosis of obstructive jaundice in children.

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the common bile duct mimicking choledochal cyst

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the common bile duct is a very rare malignancy of childhood. The radiological appearance of the lesion is similar to that of congenital choledochal cyst if there is no local invasion to the adjacent tissues. The authors present a case of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the common bile duct which was considered to be a congenital choledochal cyst preoperatively, and they discuss this very rare childhood tumor, with a brief survey of the literature. In conclusion, it is important to know that this rare tumor can simulate congenital choledochal cyst; it should be considered in the differential diagnosis of obstructive jaundice in children.

Obstructive jaundice resulting from adenocarcinoma of the ampulla of Vater in an 11-year-old boy

Adenocarcinoma of ampulla of Vater causing obstructive jaundice in an 11-year-old boy is reported. He first underwent pylorus-preserving duodenectomy, which later necessitated classical Whipple operation because of the microscopical evidence of the disease beyond surgical margins. This child is the youngest case of adenocarcinoma of ampulla of Vater in the English-language literature.

Endodermal sinus tumour associated with benign teratoma of the common bile duct

We report a 5-year-old boy with endodermal sinus tumour associated with benign cystic teratoma of the common bile duct (CBD). To our knowledge, there has been one case of teratoma of the CBD in the English literature with no morphological or radiological description. Our case presented a lobulated polypoid mass obstructing the distal CBD on sonography and computed tomography, which resembled the botryoid masses of rhabdomyosarcoma.
