Preparation and characterization of 10B targets at JRC-Geel

Measurements of neutron-induced cross sections to generate nuclear data are a core activity of the JRC-Directorate G Standards for Nuclear Safety, Security and Safeguards unit in Geel. Thin 10B layers are of great importance in this activity as they are used to measure the absolute neutron flux in the beam using the standard 10B(n,α)7Li reaction cross-section as a reference. After a period of reduced activity and in line with a renewed interest for nuclear data, the demand for high quality 10B targets increased. In this paper we describe the design and features of a new e-beam evaporator specifically customized for the preparation of boron targets as replacement of the old dysfunctional equipment. Several 10B targets of varying thicknesses were prepared and characterized as part of the factory acceptance tests and implementation in the JRC-Geel target preparation laboratory. Differential substitution weighing was applied for mass determination and in order to calibrate the thickness monitor. Comparative time-of-flight measurements relative to 10B and 235U standard targets were conducted at the GELINA neutron time-of-flight facility at the JRC-Geel site as second methodology for the determination of 10B areal density. The morphology of the layers was assessed by means of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The determination of impurities was realized by means of Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX). Finally, two boron targets were prepared in the frame of the measurement of the neutron induced fission cross-section of 230Th at the n_TOF neutron time-of-flight facility at CERN.

Development of a novel non-contact and quick-response detector for boron in coal fly ash based on thermal neutron absorptiometry

Coal fly ash (CFA), a by-product from coal-fired power plants, has many applications. However, there are concerns that the trace elements in CFA-based materials may contaminate groundwater. Therefore, many methods have been developed to rapidly measure these trace elements in CFA in order to management and/or screening their leachability. However, satisfactory methods to measure boron alone have not been reported. In this study, we developed an instrument for the non-contact analysis of boron in CFA samples. This simple instrument consisted of a sealed neutron source, a moderator, a proportional counter, and a signal processing device. The analysis method, based on thermal neutron absorptiometry, can rapidly measure the boron content within five minutes without pre-treatment. We applied the developed equipment to over 200 CFA samples, and excellent correlation was obtained between the proposed and traditional methods. These results indicated that the developed equipment is useful for managing and/or screening boron in CFA.

Structural characterization of cationic liposomes loaded with sugar-based carboranes

In this article we report the physicochemical characterization of cationic liposomes loaded with orthocarborane and two of its sugar-containing derivatives. Carboranes are efficient boron delivery agents in boron neutron capture therapy, an anti-cancer treatment based on neutron absorption by 10B nuclei. Cationic liposomes were prepared using the positively charged DOTAP and the zwitterionic DOPE, as a helper lipid. These liposomes are currently used in gene therapy for their ability in targeting the cell nucleus; therefore they can be considered appropriate vectors for boron neutron capture therapy, in the quest of reducing the high boron amount that is necessary for successful cancer treatment. Boron uptake was determined by an original in situ method, based on neutron absorption. The structural properties of the loaded liposomes were studied in detail by the combined use of small angle x-ray scattering and small angle neutron scattering. These techniques established the global shape and size of liposomes and their bilayer composition. The results were discussed in term of molecular properties of the hosted drugs. Differences found in the insertion modality were correlated with the preparation procedure or with the specific shape and lipophilic-hydrophilic balance of each carborane.
