An approach for solving multi-level diagnosis in high sensitivity medical diagnosis systems through the application of semantic technologies

The capability of medical diagnosis systems to provide results in different situations depends on the modeling of the knowledge base. In the case of high sensitivity systems, the capability of having an adequate model allows to increase the accuracy of the system even in situations where the number of input elements is low. In this context the concept of multi-level diagnosis emerges, where a pathology can be assumed as a diagnostic element of another pathology (acting as a finding). In this paper this concept is studied in depth from the modeling point of view, providing a solution based on rule inference techniques modeled with semantic technologies, and allowing solving the problem generated by multi-level diagnosis.

Information technology in the future of health care

Technology advances have changed the face of health care. This paradigm shift blurred the boundaries between public health, acute care, and prevention. Technology's role in the diagnosis, treatment assignment, follow-ups, and prevention will be reviewed and future impact projected. The understanding of shift in our expectation for each aspect of health care is critical so that levels of success are understood. Technology advances in health care delivery will be discussed. Specific applications are presented and explained and future trends discussed. Four applications are defined, and related to categories of technologies and their attributes.

Intranet usage and potential in acute care hospitals in the United States: survey-2000

This paper provides the results of the Survey-2000 measuring Intranet and its potential in health care. The survey measured the levels of Internet and Intranet existence and usage in acute care hospitals. Business-to-business electronic commerce and electronic commerce for customers were measured. Since the Intranet was not studied in survey-1997, no comparisons could be made. Therefore the results were presented and discussed. The Intranet data were compared with the Internet data and statistically significant differences were presented and analyzed. This information will assist hospitals to plan Internet and Intranet technology. This is the third of three articles based upon the results of the Survey-2000. Readers are referred to prior articles by the author, which discusses the survey design and provides a tutorial on technology transfer in acute care hospitals.(1) The first article based upon the survey results discusses technology transfer, system design approaches, user involvement, and decision-making purposes. (2) The second article based upon the survey results discusses distribution of Internet usage and rating of Internet usage applied to specific applications. Homepages, advertising, and electronic commerce are discussed from an Internet perspective.

The survey also measured the levels Internet and Intranet presents in acute care hospitals, which will be discussed in future articles. The depth of the survey includes e-commerce for both business to business and customers. These results are compared, where appropriate, with results from survey 1997 and changes are discussed. This information will provide benchmarks for hospitals to plan their network technology position and to set goals. This is the first of three articles based upon the results of the Srvey-2000. Readers are referred to a prior article by the author that discusses the survey design and provides a tutorial on technology transfer in acute care hospitals.

Tutorial on technology transfer and survey design and data collection for measuring Internet and Intranet existence, usage, and impact (survey-2000) in acute care hospitals in the United States

This paper provides a tutorial of technology transfer for management information systems in health care. Additionally it describes the process for a national survey of acute care hospitals using a random sample of 813 hospitals. The purpose of the survey was to measure the levels of Internet and Intranet existence and usage in acute care hospitals. The depth of the survey includes e-commerce for both business to business and with customers. The relationships with systems approaches, user involvement, user satisfaction and decision-making will be studied. Changes with results of a prior survey conducted in 1997 can be studied and enabling and inhabiting factors identified. This information will provide benchmarks for hospitals to plan their network technology position and to set goals.

Medical record innovations that can improve physician productivity

Medical records are the fulcrum of patient care activities. They represent the primary reference point with respect to the patient's medical status and long-term planning. A significant portion of the patient care dollar is invested in the medical record document and its handling. The most critical part of this process takes place in the physician's examination room during the patient encounter. The use of SmartCharts is a way to expedite the chart generation process and improve the quality and consistency of the source information from which all future care and plans are generated. The process removes a substantial portion of the human memory cycle that is needed for chart development and improves the encounter process by exploring the full range of diagnostic signs and symptoms that are associated with a preselected diagnosis or patient problem. The system is designed for stand-alone operation or insertion into an already-functioning electronic medical record system.

Decision-making with and without information technology in acute care hospitals: survey in the United States

These survey results are from a national survey of acute care hospitals. A random sample of 813 hospitals was selected with 115 responding and 33 incorrect addresses resulting in a 15% response rate. The purpose of the study was to measure the extent of information systems integration in the financial, medical, and administrative systems of the hospitals. Decision making with and without information technology is explored based upon the survey data. The results indicate why and how meetings are held. Necessary changes in the decision-making environment are identified for decision making utilizing information technology to be successful. These results will provide a benchmark for hospitals to determine their technology transfer position and to set goals for computer assisted decision-making.
