Long-term visual results after pars plicata lensectomy-vitrectomy for congenital cataracts

We performed a pars plicata lensectomy-vitrectomy on 32 patients (47 eyes) with congenital cataracts. Ocular abnormalities, mainly nystagmus, strabismus, and microphthalmia, were present in 29 patients. No complications occurred intraoperatively or postoperatively in 39 eyes with up to 8 1/2 years' follow-up (average 2.2 years). The pars plicata approach is a good surgical technique for the management of congenital cataracts.

Evaluation for cystoid maculopathy after pars plicata lensectomy-vitrectomy for congenital cataracts

Seventeen patients (25 eyes) who underwent a pars plicata lensectomy and vitrectomy for congenital cataract were evaluated with fluorescein angiography and angioscopy for the presence of cystoid macular edema. Studies were done from 1 month to 7 years after surgery (mean interval, 22.5 months; median interval, 12 months). Except in one eye with questionable grade 1 cystoid macular edema, the authors did not find this complication in any of their patients.

Management of congenital cataracts

The management of congenital cataracts at the Wilmer Institute is presented, with emphasis on the need for careful preoperative assessment. The indications and techniques for surgery in uncomplicated cataracts are discussed, and the advantages of using vitrectomy instruments in complicated congenital cataracts, such as those associated with persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous, are described.

Surgery of congenital and juvenile cataracts: a pars plicata approach with the vitrophage

Eighteen eyes with congenital cataracts were surgically managed by pars plicata lensectomy and vitrectomy using the vitrophage. No major intraoperative or postoperative complications were encountered. All eyes have maintained extremely clear media, attached retinas, and absence of pupillary block during a follow-up period ranging from 12 to 36 months.
