Alloparental care and kinship in captive social groups of vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops sabaeus)

Support for the parental practice hypothesis: Subadult prairie voles exhibit similar behavioral and neural profiles when alloparenting kin and non-kin

Parental care is critical for offspring survival in altricial species. Although parents are the most common caregivers, other individuals (e.g., older siblings) can also provide alloparental care. Some have argued that animals engage in alloparental behavior to practice providing care for their eventual offspring, whereas others have argued that alloparental behavior enhances indirect fitness. Proximate measures have the potential to test ultimate functions of behavior. A focus on neural expression of oxytocin and vasopressin (two neuropeptides modulating alloparental care) or neural activation following exposure to related and unrelated individuals could reveal whether practice or investment in indirect fitness explains alloparental behavior. This study examined alloparental behaviors and neural responses in prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster), a species that engages in alloparental behavior. Subadult (independent, yet sexually immature) male prairie voles were exposed to one of four stimuli: same-age sibling, neonatal sibling, unrelated neonate, or inanimate neonate-sized object. We assessed alloparental behaviors and quantified cFos protein expression in oxytocin and vasopressin neuronal populations of the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus and the supraoptic nucleus of the hypothalamus in response to stimulus exposure. We detected no differences in cFos and nonapeptide co-localization among stimulus groups. Subjects performed similar amounts of alloparental care toward related and unrelated neonates, but not other subadults or inanimate objects. Notably, caregiving did not differ based on kin-status. The lack of difference in alloparenting toward related and non-related neonates suggests that alloparental care in prairie voles primarily serves to provide subadults with parental practice.

Infant handling by female mountain gorillas: Establishing its frequency, function, and (ir)relevance for life history evolution

OBJECTIVES

Infant handling describes cases in which youngsters are temporarily removed from the care of their mothers and "taken care of" (held, carried, etc.) by other conspecifics. Handlers may gain indirect fitness benefits from these actions and can practice mothering skills, thereby improving the odds of survival of their own infants. Great apes are notable for displaying little infant handling. Apart from anecdotal observations, no published data exist on infant handling in wild mountain gorillas. We tested two of the most pertinent explanations ("kin selection" and "learning to mother") in a wild population of mountain gorillas in Rwanda. We predicted that (a) nulliparous females would exhibit infant handling (i.e., carrying) more than parous females and (b) maternal kin would exhibit more infant handling than nonkin.

METHODS

We collated 8 years of data on infant carrying behavior collected in 13 groups monitored by the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund's Karisoke Research Center.

RESULTS

Infant handling is an infrequent behavior (1,783 instances over 25,600 observation hours). A strong positive effect of relatedness and handler parity on the frequency of infant handling emerged.

CONCLUSIONS

While the nature of handler-infant interactions (affiliative, abusive, etc.) remains unstudied, they could constitute alloparental care and could therefore attenuate maternal energetic burden and ultimately allow increased birth rates. However, the rarity of this behavior makes it an unlikely contributor to mountain gorillas' relatively short interbirth intervals.

Assessment of the release of rehabilitated vervet monkeys into the Ntendeka Wilderness Area, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa: a case study

In South Africa, vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus aethiops) are frequently persecuted, resulting in large numbers of injured and/or orphaned animals. Rehabilitation centres aim to care for these monkeys and ultimately return them to the wild whenever possible. However, it is unknown whether rehabilitation is successful in its goal of creating wild-living, independent, self-sustaining troops due to limited published research in this area. This study describes the release and subsequent fate of a troop of rehabilitated vervet monkeys over a 6-month period. A troop of 16 monkeys was released into the Ntendeka Wilderness Area, a protected part of Ngome Forest, by the WATCH (Wild Animal Trauma Centre and Haven) rehabilitation centre in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Monitoring data were evaluated with regard to survival, mortality, suitability of the release site, breeding, condition, troop composition, behaviour, group dynamics, ranging patterns and the effectiveness of monitoring tools. The release was considered to be a partial success in that the troop exhibited behaviour, group dynamics and ranging patterns similar to wild conspecifics. However, the survival rate was low and the troop was judged to be non-self-sustaining. The main problems identified were the limited lifetimes of radio collars, which resulted in missing animals and caused monitoring to be cut short, illegal hunting activities, predation and a small troop size with few adults. The authors recommend improvements that may increase success, such as retaining troops in release enclosures for longer periods, releasing a larger troop with more adults that more closely matches wild troop composition, selecting a release site at least 3 km from the nearest human settlement and the use of GPS collars to allow for a longer monitoring period encompassing all seasonal conditions. Furthermore, all primates for release should be medically screened so as to avoid potential negative impacts on wild populations.
