Abstract
Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are essential for the development of the nervous system in animals. It is known that pigs are good models for human in many aspects. The aim of the study was to investigate how fat content and FA composition in sows’ diet influence FA composition in brain of newborn and in liver and brain of one-day-old piglets, respectively. High fat (6 %) feeds were designed with regard to saturated or polyunsaturated fat content and n-6/n-3 ratio by adding either oats rich in linoleic acid (LA) or linseed oil rich in α-linolenic acid (ALA). The ratio n-6/n-3 PUFA was 11 in all three diets (the low fat (3 %), high fat saturated and high fat oats diet), while the ratio in the linseed oil diet was 2. Increased proportion of ALA in the diet increased ALA and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) in piglets’ neutral and polar liver lipids and the long chain PUFA, EPA, docosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acid in piglet brain. The results suggest that transport of n-3 PUFA from sow to piglet was higher via milk than via bloodstream in the uterus and that increased content of ALA in sows’ feed led to an increased accumulation of n-3 FA in piglets’ liver and brain.

Abstract
Phospholipids and triacylglycerols (TAGs) are important classes of lipids in biological systems. Rapid methods have been developed for their characterization in crude samples, including MALDI time-of-flight MS. For mixtures, MALDI often selectively shows only some components. For example, phosphatidylcholine (PC) suppresses detection of other lipids. Most rapid MS methods detect either TAGs or phospholipids but not both. Herein, we demonstrate a simple approach to rapidly screen mixtures containing multiple lipid classes. To validate this approach, reference lipids [PC, tripalmitin (PPP), and phosphatidyl-ethanolamine (PE)] and real samples (beef, egg yolk) were used. In a binary mixture with a strong suppressor (PC), PPP was greatly suppressed. After a simple separation, suppression was virtually eliminated. A mixture of nominally nonsuppressing lipids (PE and PPP) was not adversely affected by separation. Ground beef and egg yolk were used to demonstrate detection of known lipid compositions where other methods have missed one or more lipids or lipid classes. Separation was performed using solid phase extraction with a PrepSep florisil column. A 10 min separation allows rapid screening for lipids and changes in lipids. It is sufficient to clearly detect all lipids and overcome suppression effects in complex lipid mixtures.

Abstract
The lipid and protein contents of yeast strains that form "flor velum" during the aging of sherry wines have been studied during their fermentation and "velum" phases. The same analyses were carried out on two other strains that do not form velum (fermentative strains). The results show a high lipid content in velum yeast during its two phases. This strain changes its lipidic components while passing from the fermentative to the velum phase, with palmitic, palmitoleic, and stearic acid concentrations decreasing, while the oleic, behenic, and lignoceric acid concentrations increase. Furthermore, a higher proteic content can be seen during the filmogenic stage of velum yeast as compared to the fermentative stage of this strain. A well-balanced distribution of amino acids is observed, which includes all essential amino acids. The sulfurated amino acids are shown to be the most limited, and a high quantity of lysine has been detected. Finally, the values of PDCAAS (Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score) and MEAA (Modified Index of Essential Amino Acids) of this strain make it recommendable for dietary uses.

Abstract
In order to develop a sensitive and reliable method for FFA quantification in lipid matrices of seeds, two SPE procedures employed in meat and dairy chemistry were compared using a 100/1 mixture of triolein/heptadecanoic acid. The overall efficiency of the SPE procedure retained was satisfactory since it allowed removal of 99.8% of triacylglycerols (TAG) and recovery of 99.2% of FFA as quantified by gas chromatography of fatty acid methyl esters (FAME). However, the low amount of TAG eluted in the FFA fraction represented a non-negligible percentage (17%) of FAME and the procedure thus required further improvement. TAG pollution was successively decreased to 12%, 8% and finally 1.5% by: i) modifying the volume of elution of TAG; ii) removing the saponification step initially performed according to the standard FAME procedure; and iii) reducing the duration of the BF(3)-catalyzed methylation reaction to 1 min. The new SPE/methylation procedure described here was then compared to the most widely used method for FFA measurement in plants which is based on thin-layer chromatography (TLC). Both procedures were applied to coffee seeds stored for 0-18 months at 15 degrees C under 62% relative humidity and provided consistent results. A very clear negative correlation was observed between the loss of seed viability and the accumulation of FFA in seeds during the course of storage independent of the method employed for FFA quantification. However, we demonstrated that the TLC/on-silica methylation procedure underestimates FFA contents in comparison with the new SPE/methylation procedure because of a selective loss of unsaturated FA.

Abstract
Our aim was to compare the effects of two pelleted diets containing differing FA composition with natural lichen pasture on reindeer's meat FA composition. In addition we wanted to increase the knowledge about reindeer FA metabolism and the effect of animal sex and age on FA composition in reindeer muscle. The trial included five reindeer groups: three grazing, consisting of adult males, adult females, and calves; and two groups of calves fed conventional pellets (CPD) and pellets containing crushed linseed (LPD), respectively, for two months before slaughter. Differences between male and female animals were mainly found in the neutral lipid fraction and related to fatness. Calves differed significantly from adult males and females in FA and lipid class composition. CPD led to a higher ratio of n-6 to n-3 FA compared with grazing. The ratio n-6/n-3 in the polar lipid (PL) fraction of the animals fed LPD was slightly, but not significantly, higher than that in the grazing reindeer. LPD-fed animals had lower proportions of long-chain polyunsaturated FA (LCPUFA), namely 20:4n-6, 22:5n-3, and 22:6n-3, in the PL fraction compared with the grazing animals due to the content of these FA in the natural feed. The animals seemed unable to elongate dietary FA in significant amounts. We conclude that by adding crushed linseed to the pellets it was possible to keep the favorable FA composition of meat from grazing reindeer with regard to the n-6/n-3 ratio but not in LCPUFA.

Abstract
A simple high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method for determination of major phospholipid classes in sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus is described. The separation was performed on a Tracer Extrasil SI 5 microm 25 x 0.4 cm column and an isocratic mobile phase of acetonitrile-methanol 85%-phosphoric acid (50:50:1.8, v/v). The HPLC method utilizes UV detection at 205 nm. Five phospholipids were identified and quantified: phosphatidylinositol (PI), phosphatidylserine (PS), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylcholine (PC) and sphingomyelin (SM). Fresh and canned samples were analyzed. Student's t-test showed no significant difference (P < or = 0.05) between the mean phospholipid contents of raw and canned sea urchin.

Abstract
Plant membrane lipids were separated by multiple solid-phase extraction (SPE) in a single run. Elution was performed continuously through the modulated stationary phase employing only non-aqueous solvent systems. At the different stages of the glycerolipid separation the SPE manifold combined arninopropyl, arninopropyl/silica gel and silica gel/aminopropyl weak anion exchanger columns. The glycerolipid extract of pigment-containing plant tissues was cleared from the pigments onto the aminopropyl column. The aminopropyl column with the glycerolipid extract was then connected to a silica gel column from which monogalactosyldiacylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and digalactosyldiacylglycerol were eluted as individual fractions. The elution was performed under polarity, pH and temperature gradient conditions. To continue the separation, the aminopropyl column was discarded and the silica gel column containing the remaining glycerolipid extract was connected to an aminopropyl anion exchanger column. Individual fractions of sulfoquinovosyldiacylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylinositol were now eluted. The separation process was supported by ammonium counter ions and by the polarity gradient of the elution systems used. The membrane lipids were isolated from pigment-containing (rice and maize leaves and rice leafy stems) and pigment-free (rice roots) tissues. The repeatability for a standard glycerolipid mixture was 2-6% (n=7), and for rice leaf lipid extracts, 3-7% (n=5). Glycerolipid recovery was 87-95%.

Abstract
This article provides information on the different procedures and methodologies developed when solid-phase extraction (SPE) is used for lipid component separation. The analytical systematics, established by different authors and designed to separate groups of compounds and also specific components by using a combination of chromatographic supports and solvents are presented. The review has been divided into three parts, which we consider well defined: edible fats and oils, fatty foods and biological samples. Separations of non-polar and polar lipids is the most extensive systematic, although many other published methods have been established to isolate specific components or a reduced number of components from edible fats and oils, fatty foods or biological samples susceptible to further analysis by other quantitative techniques.
