Interdiffusion and crosslinking in thermoset latex films

Water-Resistant Latex Coatings: Tuning of Properties by Polymerizable Surfactant, Covalent Crosslinking and Nanostructured ZnO Additive

This paper deals with the development of acrylic latexes providing high-performance water-resistant coatings. For this purpose, mutual effects of anionic surfactant type (ordinary and polymerizable), covalent intra- and/or interparticle crosslinking (introduced by allyl methacrylate copolymerization and keto-hydrazide reaction, respectively) and ionic crosslinking (provided by nanostructured ZnO additive) were investigated. The latexes were prepared by the standard emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate and methacrylic acid as the main monomers. The addition of surface-untreated powdered nanostructured ZnO was performed during latex synthesis, resulting in stable latexes comprising dispersed nanosized additive in the content of ca 0.9−1.0 wt.% (based on solids). The coating performance with emphasis on water resistance was evaluated. It was determined that the application of the polymerizable surfactant improved coating adhesion and water-resistance, but it wasn′t able to ensure high water-resistance of coatings. Highly water-resistant coatings were obtained provided that covalent intra- and interparticle crosslinking together with ionic crosslinking were employed in the coating composition, forming densely crosslinked latex films. Moreover, coatings comprising nanostructured ZnO additive displayed a significant antibacterial activity and improved solvent resistance.

Failure Mechanisms of the Coating/Metal Interface in Waterborne Coatings: The Effect of Bonding

Waterborne coating is the most popular type of coating, and improving its performance is a key point of research. Cathodic delamination is one of the major modes of failure for organic coatings. It refers to the weakening or loss of adhesion between the coating and substrate. Physical and chemical characteristics of coatings have been studied via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), contact angle measurements, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). Early heterogeneous swelling at the metal-coating interface in non-defective coated metals was elucidated using frequency-dependent alternating-current scanning electrochemical microscopy. Two types of coatings (styrene-acrylic coating and terpolymer coating) were compared. The effects of thickness, surface roughness, and chemical bonding on cathodic delamination were investigated.

A new understanding of the failure of waterborne acrylic coatings

Two waterborne coatings, a styrene–acrylic coating and a terpolymer coating based on acrylic acid, vinyl chloride and 1,1-dichloroethylene segments, had their barrier properties and wet adhesion compared after immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution.

Smart polymer nanoparticles for high-performance water-borne coatings

Poly(butyl methacrylate) nanoparticles encapsulating a silica precursor, tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), were synthesized by a two-step emulsion polymerization process. We show that TEOS remains mostly unreacted inside the nanoparticles in water but acts both as a plasticizer and cross-linker in films cast from the dispersions. The diffusion-enhancing plasticizing effect is dominant at annealing temperatures closer to the glass-transition temperature of the polymer, and sol-gel cross-linking reactions predominate at higher temperatures. By choosing an appropriate annealing temperature, we were able to balance polymer interdiffusion and silica cross-linking to obtain films with good mechanical properties and excellent chemical resistance. The hybrid cross-linked films produced from these novel "smart" nanoparticles can be used in water-borne environmentally friendly coatings for high-performance applications.

A fluorescence approach to investigate repartitioning of coalescing agents in acrylic polymer emulsions

Repartitioning of co-solvents between particles of latex emulsions was investigated by means of a fluorescence method based on the detection of the amount of co-solvent via the solvatochromic shift of the emission maximum of a fluorescent probe, copolymerized at a low concentration. Complete repartitioning of co-solvents between particles of latex materials with a low T_g (ca. 25 °C) occurred within minutes. For a hydrophilic latex with a T_g of 68 °C, equilibration was achieved within an hour. Repartitioning was faster for more hydrophobic co-solvents. For a hydrophobic latex of similar T_g, co-solvent repartitioning took place on the same time scale, but complete equilibration was not reached. Possibly, there is an additional slow component in the repartitioning, or the prolonged presence of co-solvent causes a structural change in the latex particles that affects the outcome of the experiment.
