Abstract
Although the etiology of radiation sickness is still unknown, disturbance of the autonomic nervous system is suggested to be a factor. This study was designed to compare the radiosensitivity of spontaneously hypertensive rats possessing sympathetic hyperfunction and control Wistar-Kyoto rats, and to analyze the effects of radiation on the autonomic nervous system in both strains. After a 7.5-Gy dose of whole-body X irradiation, the blood pressure decreased significantly at 8 h and 2 days in the spontaneously hypertensive rats, but not in the Wistar-Kyoto rats. Epinephrine levels in the adrenal gland of spontaneously hypertensive rats decreased at 4, 8 and 24 h, unlike the Wistar-Kyoto rats. Radiation evoked a stronger increase in norepinephrine in the jejunum and colon of spontaneously hypertensive rats than in Wistar-Kyoto rats. Acetylcholine levels in the jejunum of spontaneously hypertensive rats decreased, in contrast to the increase in Wistar-Kyoto rats within 24 h after irradiation. The survival rate of spontaneously hypertensive rats was lower than that of Wistar-Kyoto rats and weight loss, appetite loss and morphological changes in the jejunum were greater in spontaneously hypertensive rats than in Wistar-Kyoto rats after irradiation. These results indicated that X irradiation caused greater activities in autonomic nervous function and severe radiation injury in spontaneously hypertensive rats. Sympathetic hyperfunction may be associated with a higher sensitivity to radiation, including radiation injury and radiation sickness.

Abstract
This review summarizes the studies published over the last twenty years on the effects of psychogenic stress on gastrointestinal function, using animal models. The effects of stress on gastric ulceration have received wide attention and the central and local mechanisms of mucosal damage have been, for the most part, clearly delineated. In comparison, relatively few studies have focused on the impact of stress on intestinal and colonic physiology, even though its influence on intestinal motility, mucosal permeability and inflammation has been established. More work is necessary in this field, especially considering the importance of irritable bowel syndrome in modern society.

Abstract
Susceptibility of stress-induced ulcer by restraint water immersion (RWI) was examined in Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY), spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP). Ulcer formation was slight in SHR, and very slight in SHRSP. The ulcer index and blood pressure showed a significant inverse correlation (P < 0.001). Acid secretion was lowest in SHRSP, and hypergastrinemia was present in SHRSP. Gastric motility was suppressed during RWI in SHR and SHRSP. The noradrenaline content of the gastric mucosa and muscle layer was significantly greater in these hypertensive strains, and histologically noradrenergic innervation in the mucosa was also denser in SHRSP and SHR. Choline acetyltransferase activity in the stomach was significantly lower in SHR and SHRSP than WKY (P < 0.01). These findings suggest that susceptibility of stress-induced ulcer is inversely correlated with systemic blood pressure and that the alteration of autonomic nervous function contributes to inhibition of stress ulcers by suppressing acid secretion and motility in the hereditary hypertensive rats.

Abstract
Wistar Kyoto (WKY) and Wistar rats were observed in four tests; the open field test (OFT), the conditioned defensive burying (DB) test, and two tests which are considered animal models of depressive behavior, namely the Porsolt forced-swim test (FST) and the shuttlebox escape responding following exposure to inescapable shock, that is, learned helplessness (LH). The four tests were administered according to a semirandomized schedule to control for sequence effects. All rats were later exposed to water-restraint stress and stomachs were subsequently inspected for ulcers. Stress ulcer severity was greater in WKY rats. WKY rats, as compared to Wistar rats, were hypoactive in the OFT, did not engage in DB, rapidly acquired the LH task, and were significantly more immobile in the FST. The FST was positively correlated with behaviors in the LH procedure and, to a lesser degree, with DB, but these relationships were observed only with WKY rats, not Wistar rats. The data suggested that the use of WKY rats represented a more sensitive procedure for detecting possible relationships between putative animal models of depressive behavior.

Abstract
Wistar Kyoto (WKY), Fischer-344 (F-344), and Wistar male and female rats during either proestrus-estrus or diestrus phases of the estrus cycle were exposed to the ulcerogenic procedure of water restraint. Both male and female WKY rats revealed significantly more stomach ulcers as compared to Wistar and F-344 rats of the same sex. No persistent sex difference was observed, but ulcer severity was more pronounced during the proestrus-estrus phase as compared to the diestrus phase of the estrus cycle particularly in WKY female rats. In the second study, WKY females were observed as more active in the open-field test (OFT), but more immobile in the forced swim test (FST), as compared to WKY male rats. In addition, proestrus-estrus WKY females were less active in the OFT and significantly more immobile in the FST as compared to diestrus females. Thus, proestrus-estrus WKY females were judged as more emotional in the OFT and as exhibiting more signs of behavioral depression according to the FST. These studies suggest that the steroid hormone milieu in WKY rats may be responsible for these behavioral changes as well as the stress responsiveness in this stress-susceptible rat strain.

Abstract
In Experiment 1, Wistar-Kyoto (WKY), Wistar, and Fischer-344 (F-344) rats were tested on two passive-avoidance tasks: a platform step-down task and a one-way avoidance task. Wistars had shorter response latency scores in the step-down task, whereas F-344 rats had shorter scores in the one-way task. A subsequent ulcerogenic water-restraint stress produced significantly fewer ulcers in Wistar rats as compared to WKY and F-344 rats. In Experiment 2, rearings, grooming, ambulation, defecation, and response ambivalence behaviors were recorded in the one-way avoidance task in addition to response latency. WKY rats defecated more and produced lower scores on the three activity measures as compared to Wistar and F-344 rats. Response latency and ambivalence scores were higher for WKY rats. The subsequent ulcerogenic procedure also produced more ulcers in WKY rats. These data verify the ulcer susceptibility of WKY rats and underscore the assertion that their predominant stress coping behaviors are immobility and freezing. High ambivalence scores in WKY rats suggest behavioral inhibition, which is readily elicited by stressors. These behaviors resemble depressive behavior and suggest that WKY rat may be a useful animal model of depression.

Abstract
We have reviewed the neurobiology of stress ulcers from animal models to potential pharmacotherapeutic mechanisms. The evidence strongly supports the hypothesis that certain stress-related gastric lesions are 'brain-driven' events which may be more effectively managed through central manipulations than by altering local, gastric factors. Recent advances in the use of anxiolytic and antidepressant drugs in the management of stress-related gastric mucosal injury further supports the contention that a brain-gut axis, which may have nervous, peptidergic and classic monoaminergic components, modulates the intricate and complicated pattern of communication between the brain and the stomach. Delineation of the precise pathways which make up this communication as well as their manipulation by various pharmacological agents will be the focus of future research endeavour.

Abstract
The mechanism of low susceptibility to stress in gastric lesion formation in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) was investigated focusing on the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. In the gastric tissues of SHR, norepinephrine (NE) and dopamine (DA) contents were higher, while acetylcholine content and choline acetyltransferase activity were lower than those of Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY). Water-immersion restraint induced gastric lesions frequently in WKY (ulcer indices : 52 +/- 7mm2) but less frequently in SHR (ulcer indices : 3 +/- 1mm2). Although NE content decreased in both SHR and WKY as a result of water-immersion restraint, it remained higher in SHR than in WKY. ACh content decreased by the procedure in WKY but not in SHR. DA content was increased by the procedure in all gastric regions of SHR. The gastric lesions induced in SHR were aggravated by pretreatment with 6-hydroxydopamine, an agent for chemical sympathectomy, following decreases of NE and DA contents. These results indicate that the relative sympathetic hyperfunction, parasympathetic hypofunction and dopaminergic mechanism in the stomach contribute to the prevention of gastric lesion formation in SHR.

Abstract
Microinjections of noradrenaline (NA, 0.3, 3.0 and 30.0 micrograms) into the central amygdalar nucleus (CEA) produced dose-related attenuations of cold restraint (3 h at 4 degrees C) induced gastric ulcer formation in rats. On the other hand, stress ulcer aggravating effects were seen with beta-adrenoceptor antagonist, propranolol (10 micrograms) but not with the alpha-adrenoceptor antagonist, prazosin (1 and 10 micrograms). Moderate enhancements of gastric stress lesions were also seen with the NA release inhibitor clonidine (1 microgram) and the neurotoxin DSP-4 (25 micrograms). Further, pretreatment of rats with intra-amygdalar (i.am.) propranolol but not prazosin, antagonized and reversed the gastric cytoprotective effects of NA. The results indicate that beta-adrenoceptor-mediated NAergic mechanisms at the level of the CEA are important for the maintenance of gastric mucosal integrity during immobilization stress.

Abstract
Cysteamine.HCl, when administered subcutaneously at 350 mg/kg, consistently induced severe gastric lesions in Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY), but not in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). In both WKY and SHR, visible ulcers could not be induced in the duodenum in response to cysteamine. It appears that the stomach and duodenum of SHR are resistant to cysteamine due to hyperfunctioning of the sympathetic nervous system.
