Abstract
A poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)-based conducting polymer, which has biorecognition capabilities, has promising biosensing applications. Previously, we developed a facile method for post-printing chemical modification of PEDOT:PSS thin films from commercial sources. Molecular recognition elements were directly introduced into the PSS side chain by a two-step chemical reaction: introduction of an ethylenediamine linker via an acid chloride reaction of the sulfonate moiety, and subsequent receptor attachment to the linker via amine coupling. In this study, the same method was used to introduce 6-carboxypyridine-3-boronic acid (carboxy-PyBA) into the linker for specifically detecting N-acetylneuraminic acid (sialic acid, SA), as a cancer biomarker. The surface-modified PEDOT:PSS films were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and static water contact angle and conductivity measurements. The specific interaction between PyBA and SA was detected by label-free reagent-free potentiometry. The SA-specific negative potential responses of modified PEDOT:PSS electrodes, which was ascribed to an SA carboxyl anion, were observed in a physiologically relevant SA range (1.6-2.9 mM) at pH 5, in a concentration-dependent manner even in the presence of 10% fetal bovine serum. The sensitivity was -2.9 mV/mM in 1-5 mM SA with a limit of detection of 0.7 mM. The sensing performances were almost equivalent to those of existing graphene-based electrical SA sensors. These results show that our chemical derivatization method for printing PEDOT:PSS thin films will have applications in SA clinical diagnostics.

Abstract
This broad, narrative review highlights the roles of sialic acids as acidic sugars found on cellular membranes. The role of sialic acids in cellular communication and development has been well established. Recently, attention has turned to the fundamental role of sialic acids in many diseases, including viral infections, cardiovascular diseases, neurological disorders, diabetic nephropathy, and malignancies. Sialic acid may be a target for developing new drugs to treat various cancers and inflammatory processes. We recommend the routine measurement of serum sialic acid as a sensitive inflammatory marker in various diseases.

Abstract
This study determined the association between serum sialic acid (SSA) and metabolic risk factors in Ghanaian Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) with and without micro vascular complications. This cross-sectional study recruited 150 T2DM out-patients visiting the diabetic Clinic at the Tema General Hospital, Ghana. Fasting blood samples were collected and analyzed for Total Cholesterol (TC), Triglyceride (TG), Low Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (LDL-C), High Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (HDL-C), Fasting Plasma Glucose (FPG), Glycated Haemoglobin (HbA1c), SSA and C-Reactive Protein. SSA levels were significantly higher in diabetics with retinopathy (210.12 ± 85.09mg/dl) compared with those with nephropathy and those without complication (p-value= 0.005). Body adiposity index (BAI) (r= -0.419, p-value = 0.037) and Triglyceride (r= -0.576, p-value = 0.003), had a moderate negative correlation with SSA levels. In a One-Way Analysis of Covariance (Adjusted for TG and BAI), SSA could distinguish between diabetics with retinopathy and those without complications (p-value = 0.004) but not nephropathy (p-value = 0.099). Within group linear regression analysis showed that Elevated serum sialic acid was found in type 2 diabetic patients with retinopathic micro-vascular complications. Therefore, estimation of sialic acid levels may help with the early prediction and prevention of microvascular complications occurring due to diabetes, thereby decreasing the mortality and morbidity.

Abstract
The most typical feature of atherogenesis in humans at its early stage is the formation of foam cells in subendothelial arterial intima, which occurs as the consequence of intracellular cholesterol deposition. The main source of lipids accumulating in the arterial wall is circulating low-density lipoprotein (LDL). However, LDL particles should undergo proatherogenic modification to acquire atherogenic properties. One of the known types of atherogenic modification of LDL is enzymatic deglycosilation, namely, desialylation, which is the earliest change in the cascade of following multiple LDL modifications. The accumulating data make sialidases an intriguing and plausible therapeutic target, since pharmacological modulation of activity of these enzymes may have beneficial effects in several pathologies, including atherosclerosis. The hypothesis exists that decreasing LDL enzymatic desialylation may result in the prevention of lipid accumulation in arterial wall, thus breaking down one of the key players in atherogenesis at the cellular level. Several drugs acting as glycomimetics and inhibiting sialidase enzymatic activity already exist, but the concept of sialidase inhibition as an anti-atherosclerosis strategy remains unexplored to date. This review is focused on the potential possibilities of the repurposing of sialidase inhibitors for pathogenetic anti-atherosclerotic therapy.

Abstract
The red blood cell has become implicated in the progression of a range of diseases; mechanisms by which red cells are involved appear to include the transport of inflammatory species via red cell-derived vesicles. We review this role of RBCs in diseases such as diabetes mellitus, sickle cell anemia, polycythemia vera, central retinal vein occlusion, Gaucher disease, atherosclerosis, and myeloproliferative neoplasms. We propose a possibly unifying, and novel, paradigm for the inducement of RBC vesiculation during vascular flow of red cells adhered to the vascular endothelium as well as to the red pulp of the spleen. Indeed, we review the evidence for this hypothesis that links physiological conditions favoring both vesiculation and enhanced RBC adhesion and demonstrate the veracity of this hypothesis by way of a specific example occurring in splenic flow which we argue has various renderings in a wide range of vascular flows, in particular microvascular flows. We provide a mechanistic basis for membrane loss and the formation of lysed red blood cells in the spleen that may mediate their turnover. Our detailed explanation for this example also makes clear what features of red cell deformability are involved in the vesiculation process and hence require quantification and a new form of quantitative indexing.

Abstract
Introduction Sialic acid (SA) is an acetylated product of neuraminic acid. It acts as a cofactor of many cell surface receptors (e.g. insulin receptors) and is positively associated with most of the serum acute phase reactants. Sialic acid is an important component of serum, which is elevated in diseases such as diabetes and certain malignancies. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is associated with an increase in SA concentration along with other complications. The present study was undertaken to assess the relationship between serum SA and type 2 diabetes. Material and methods A total of 200 type 2 DM patients, 145 males and 55 females, were included in the study. Also, 100 healthy individuals served as the control group. Parameters assessed included serum SA, lipid profile, urine microalbumin, LDL-C, lipoprotein(a), and serum fibrinogen. The relationship between serum SA and diabetic complications viz retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy was also assessed. Results Type 2 DM patients had significantly higher levels (p < 0.01) of SA (77.35 ±4.6 mg%) as compared to the control group (68.23 ±7.9 mg%). Increased levels of serum SA were seen in patients with diabetic nephropathy and retinopathy. No correlation was seen between serum SA and diabetic neuropathy. Conclusions Elevated serum SA concentration is significantly related to type 2 DM and associated cardiovascular risk factors. Further study of acute-phase response markers and mediators as indicators or predictors of diabetic microvascular complications is therefore justified.

Abstract
Human lifespan has increased significantly in the last 200 years, emphasizing our need to age healthily. Insights into molecular mechanisms of aging might allow us to slow down its rate or even revert it. Similar to aging, glycosylation is regulated by an intricate interplay of genetic and environmental factors. The dynamics of glycopattern variation during aging has been mostly explored for plasma/serum and immunoglobulin G (IgG) N-glycome, as we describe thoroughly in this chapter. In addition, we discuss the potential functional role of agalactosylated IgG glycans in aging, through modulation of inflammation level, as proposed by the concept of inflammaging. We also comment on the potential to use the plasma/serum and IgG N-glycome as a biomarker of healthy aging and on the interventions that modulate the IgG glycopattern. Finally, we discuss the current knowledge about animal models for human plasma/serum and IgG glycosylation and mention other, less explored, instances of glycopattern changes during organismal aging and cellular senescence.

Abstract
Mammalian lung development proceeds during the postnatal period and continues throughout life. Intricate tubular systems of airways and vessels lined by epithelial cells are developed during this process. All cells, and particularly epithelial cells, carry an array of glycans on their surfaces. N-acetylneuraminic (Neu5Ac) and N-glycolylneuraminic (Neu5Gc) acids, two most frequently-occurring sialic acid residues, are essential determinants during development and in the homeostasis of cells and organisms. However, systematic data about the presence of cell surface sialic acids in the postnatal lung and their content is still scarce. In the present study, we addressed the histochemical localization of Neu5Ac > Neu5Gc in 0-day-old rat lungs. Furthermore, both residues were separated, identified and quantified in lung membranes isolated from 0-day-old rat lungs using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) methodologies. Finally, we compared these results with those previously reported by us for adult rat lungs. The Neu5Ac > Neu5Gc residues were located on the surface of ciliated and non-ciliated cells and the median values for both residues in the purified lung membranes of newborn rats were 5.365 and 1.935 μg/mg prot., respectively. Comparing these results with those reported for the adults, it was possible to observe a significant difference between the levels of Neu5Ac and Neu5Gc (p < 0.001). A more substantial change was found for the case of Neu5Ac. The preponderance of Neu5Ac and its expressive increase during the postnatal development points towards a more prominent role of this residue. Bearing in mind that sialic acids are negatively charged molecules, the high content of Neu5Ac could contribute to the formation of an anion "shield" and have a role in pulmonary development and physiology.

Abstract
Coronaviruses (CoVs) are a diverse family of the enveloped human and animal viruses reported as causative agents for respiratory and intestinal infections. The high pathogenic potential of human CoVs, including SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2, is closely related to the invasion mechanisms underlying the attachment and entry of viral particles to the host cells. There is increasing evidence that sialylated compounds of cellular glycocalyx can serve as an important factor in the mechanism of CoVs infection. Additionally, the sialic acid-mediated cross-reactivity with the host immune lectins is known to exert the immune response of different intensity in selected pathological stages. Here, we focus on the last findings in the field of glycobiology in the context of the role of sialic acid in tissue tropism, viral entry kinetics and immune regulation in the CoVs infections.

Abstract
Sialic acids, particularly N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac), are present as terminal components of rich and complex oligosaccharide chains, which are termed glycans, and are exhibited on the cell surfaces, especially on epithelial cells. Crucial in the 'social behavior' of the cell, sialic acids play vital roles in many physiological and pathological phenomena. The aim of the present study was to separate, identify, and quantify Neu5Ac in purified lung membranes from 4-, 14-, and 21-day-old animals, followed by the statistical analysis of these results with our previously reported data (0-day-old and adult results). Complementary, ultrastructural methodologies were used. The differences in the Neu5Ac values obtained across the examined postnatal-lung development relevant ages studied were found to be statistically significant. A substantial increase in the mean level of this compound was found during the period of 'bulk' alveolarization, which takes place from postnatal day 4 to 14 (P4-P14). The comparison of the mean levels of Neu5Ac, during microvascular maturation (mainly between P12 and P21), reveals that the difference, although statistically significant, is the least significant difference among all the pair-wise differences between the developmental stages. The presence of sub-terminal N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc)/Galactose (Gal) residues with terminal sialic acids on the bronchioloalveolar cell surfaces was confirmed using lung ultra-thin sections of adult and 0-day-old animals. These results showed that, although Neu5Ac levels increase throughout postnatal lung development, this sialic acid was substantially added to epithelial cell surfaces during the "bulk" alveolarization period, while its presence was less important during the microvascular maturation period. Bearing in mind that sialic acids are negatively charged and create charge repulsions between adjacent cells, we hypothesized that they can substantially contribute to postnatal alveolar formation and maturation.

Abstract
PURPOSE To establish the relationship between sialylation of integrin α5β1 and possible alteration in the function of α5β1 receptor in melanoma cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS Integrin α5β1 was isolated from primary WM115 (RGP/VGP-like phenotype) and metastatic WM266-4 (lymph node metastasis) cells via affinity chromatography. Integrin α5β1 sialylation and the shift in relative masses of the enzymatically desialylated subunits were confirmed by confocal microscopy and SDS-PAGE, respectively. The ELISA assay was performed to evaluate sialic acid (SA) influence on integrin α5β1 binding to fibronectin (FN). Cell invasion was investigated by the Transwell invasion assay. The effect of neuraminidases treatment on melanoma cells was assessed by flow cytometry using Maackia amurensis and Sambucus nigra lectins. RESULTS Both subunits of integrin α5β1 were found to be more abundantly sialylated in primary than in metastatic cells. The removal of SA had no effect on the purified integrin α5β1 binding to FN. Although metastatic cells underwent more pronounced desialylation than primary cells, invasion of primary WM115 cells was more dependent on the presence of α2-3 linked SA than it was in the case of metastatic WM266-4 cells. In both melanoma cell lines not only integrin α5β1 was involved in invasion, however simultaneous desialylation and usage of anti-integrin α5β1 antibodies resulted in lower invasion abilities of primary WM115 cells. CONCLUSIONS Our data suggest that in primary melanoma cells integrin α5β1 action is more likely dependent on its glycosylation profile, i.e. the presence of SA residues, which influence (decreased) their invasion properties and may facilitate malignant melanoma progression.

Abstract
The lung, in air-breathing vertebrates, is a tree-like structure composed of branching tubes ending in alveoli and lined by diverse and highly specialized epithelial cells. A dense array of complex and diverse glycoconjugates is present on essentially all animal cell surfaces. Sialic acids are widely allocated at the outermost ends of glycan chains, attached to membrane proteins and lipids below. Due to their abundance and their terminal position in glycans, sialic acids are implicated in many physiological and pathological functions. Although the composition of lung epithelial cell-surface glycans has been studied over the years, it is not yet completely understood. In the present work, we aimed to histochemically localize N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac)>N-glycolylneuraminic acid (Neu5Gc) residues on rat bronchioloalveolar epithelial cell surfaces using light microscopy (LM) methods. In lung membranes isolated from adult rat lung homogenates, we also separated, identified and quantified Neu5Ac and Neu5Gc by means of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and systematically described the optimized HPLC methods used. Sialic acid residues were localized on the surface coat of bronchioloalveolar cells, and the mean quantification of Neu5Ac and Neu5Gc in the adult rat lung homogenates was 12,26 and 2,73 μg/mg prot., respectively, revealing a manifest preponderance of Neu5Ac. A coefficient of variation (CV) of 4,98% and 4,40%, respectively was obtained and an optimal dispersion variability expressed by the SD and the CV was also reported, confirming the efficiency of the methodology. To the best of our knowledge, our group was the first to identify, separate and quantify sialic acids in purified lung membranes. The presence of these residues contributes to a strong anionic shield and may provide an hydrating and protective barrier as well as a repulsive structure that is crucial to lung physiology.

Abstract
This clinical study was designed to find out the correlation between oxidative stress and sialic acid (SA) content of plasma and RBCs in patients with type 2 diabetes. We evaluated SA concentration and oxidative stress biomarkers in healthy subjects and diabetic patients with and without complications in a cross-sectional survey. Significant changes in oxidative stress biomarkers and RBC-SA were revealed in the diabetic patients compared to those in the healthy group. Plasma SA significantly increased with an increase in lipid peroxidation of RBCs (LPO-RBC) (P < 0.001) in the diabetic patients without complication. RBC-SA significantly decreased with an elevation in LPO-RBC (P < 0.001) in all the diabetic patients and those with nephropathy. There was no significant correlation between plasma and RBC-SA and other oxidative stress biomarkers in the diabetic subjects. In multiple logistic regression analysis, RBC-SA was independently related to LPO-RBC in all the diabetic patients and those with nephropathy. We conclude that the induction of LPO-RBC in diabetic patients and those with nephropathy may influence the SA decomposition of RBC membrane, thereby altering its functions and transporter activities. Therefore, LPO-RBC and SA levels in RBCs can be used for prediction of diabetic nephropathy, and further studies to evaluate other factors contributing to desialylation of RBC membrane are justified.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Oral cancer has become the most common cause of cancer related mortality which may be preceded by oral potentially malignant disorders. Altered glycosylation of glycoconjugates, such as sialic acid are one of the most important molecular changes accompanied during malignant transformation in precancerous lesions like Oral Leukoplakia (OL), and correlating them histopathologically with grades of epithelial dysplasia which will serve clinical significance. AIM The aim of this study was to evaluate the significance of serum Total Sialic Acid (TSA) and serum Lipid Bound Sialic Acid (LSA) as a prognostic serum marker in Oral Leukoplakia. MATERIALS AND METHODS Blood samples were collected from 30 patients diagnosed with OL and 30 healthy controls. Serum sialic acid (total and lipid bound) levels were measured using spectrophotometer. Tissue samples were histopathologically typed and were graded for epithelial dysplasia. Data were analysed using Independent t-test and Kruskal Wallis method. RESULTS Serum levels of both total and lipid bound sialic acids were found to be increased in OL when compared to healthy controls. The mean TSA levels among those in the OL group (45.3±4.2) were significantly greater than healthy controls (29±2.2). On multiple comparison the highest mean TSA level was found in severe OL compared to moderate and mild OL (p<0.05). The mean levels of LSA were found to be statistically non-significant between the groups. CONCLUSION The present study showed that the serum levels of both TSA and LSA were found to be increased in OL when compared to apparently healthy controls. We also found that with increasing grades of epithelial dysplasia TSA levels were found to be gradually increasing which was significant for this study serving as an early indicator for the detection of malignant transformation in OL.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) is the leading cause of death worldwide. Oxidative stress and inflammation play important role in the destabilization of plaques leading to ACS. Markers which reflect this pathophysiologic mechanism may have prognostic value. Myeloperoxidase (MPO) and Sialic acid are markers of inflammation and oxidative stress. Both these markers are increased in patients with ACS. Their prognostic value in ACS is not well established. AIM To analyse the prognostic value of plasma myeloperoxidase and total sialic acid levels in patients with suspected acute coronary syndrome. MATERIALS AND METHODS A prospective study was conducted on 93 consecutively admitted patients with chest pain from July 2011 to September 2011. Plasma MPO and total sialic acid levels on admission were estimated spectrophotometrically. These were compared with extent of disease, development of complications during the hospital stay, left ventricular ejection fraction and mean duration of stay in hospital. RESULTS Plasma MPO and total sialic acid levels were significantly higher in patients with myocardial infarction than those with unstable and stable angina (p<0.001 and p<0.007 respectively). The levels of plasma MPO and sialic acid levels were significantly higher in patients who developed complications like heart failure, arrhythmias, renal failure during their stay in hospital (p<0.011 and p<0.006 respectively). Ejection fraction was significantly low in patients with high MPO levels (p<0.011). CONCLUSION In patients with ACS, plasma MPO and total sialic acid levels on admission could predict the development of complications during their hospital stay. MPO levels correlated with ejection fraction in patients with ACS.

Abstract
Background and objective N-Acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac), a type of sialic acid, has close links with cholesterol metabolism and is often used as a biomarker in evaluating the risk of cardiovascular diseases. However, most studies on the health implications of Neu5Ac have focused on its effects on the nervous system, while its effects on cardiovascular risk factors have largely been unreported. Thus, the effects of Neu5Ac on coagulation status in high fat diet (HFD)-induced hyperlipidemic rats were evaluated in this study. Methods Sprague Dawley male rats were divided into five different groups and fed with HFD alone, HFD low-dose Neu5Ac, HFD high-dose Neu5Ac, HFD simvastatin (10 mg/kg day), and normal pellet alone. Food was given ad libitum while body weight of rats was measured weekly. After 12 weeks of intervention, rats were sacrificed and serum and tissue samples were collected for biochemistry and gene expression analysis, respectively. Results The results showed that Neu5Ac could improve lipid metabolism and hyperlipidemia-associated coagulation. Neu5Ac exerted comparable or sometimes better physiological effects than simvastatin, at biochemical and gene expression levels. Conclusions The data indicated that Neu5Ac prevented HFD-induced hyperlipidemia and associated hypercoagulation in rats through regulation of lipid-related and coagulation-related genes and, by extension, induced metabolite and protein changes. The implications of the present findings are that Neu5Ac may be used to prevent coagulation-related cardiovascular events in hyperlipidemic conditions. These findings are worth studying further.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is caused by destabilization and rupture of atherosclerotic plaque in the coronary artery via mechanisms affecting leukocyte signaling, rolling, adhesion, extravasation and inflammation-promoting factors. The majority of cellular communication takes place on the membrane surface that is covered with glycoproteins and glycolipids synthesized by glycosyltransferases. The aim of this study was to determine the mRNA expression of leukocyte adhesion-related glycosyltransferases in patients during the onset and the chronic phase of ACS and to compare the expression with matching subjects without coronary disease. SUBJECTS AND METHODS The study included 26 ACS patients and 26 ACS-free matched-pair controls. Blood samples were collected at the time of hospital admittance and 8 days later. Expression analysis of six fucosyltransferases and six sialyltransferases was performed by a real-time polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS At the time of admittance ACS subjects had lower expression levels of FUT4, ST6GalNac4, ST6Gal1 and GM3 synthase (p < 0.05) than the control subjects, and moreover, after 8 days down-regulation of FUT7 and ST6GalNac3 was also observed (p < 0.05). When compared to the initial gene expression, after treatment and stabilization of ACS subjects, FUT7, ST6GalNac2 and ST6GalNac3 were down-regulated, whereas ST6GalNac1 was up-regulated. Expression levels of FUT7, ST6GalNac1, ST6GalNac2 and ST6GalNac3 were predicted by several drugs and medical history. CONCLUSION Expression of glycosyltransferase genes differs in ACS and control subjects. During the course of the ACS study we established further changes in gene expression levels. Medical history was predictive of gene expression levels while drugs were shown to modulate expression levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Detection of cancer at an early stage is of utmost importance to decrease the morbidity and mortality of the disease. Apart from the conventional biopsy, non-invasive methods like analysis of serum and saliva may provide cost-effective approach for screening a large population. Tumor markers are a major part of secondary prevention and thus, the detection of malignancies. The aim of this study was to evaluate total sialic acid (TSA), total protein and total sugar (TS) in serum and saliva of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and controls to assess their role as a diagnostic marker. MATERIALS AND METHODS Unstimulated whole saliva and sera were collected from 40 squamous cell carcinoma patients and 20 controls. Serum and salivary TSA, total protein and TS estimation was carried out. This was correlated with clinical stages and histopathological grades of OSCC. The data obtained was analyzed statistically using Chi-square test, ANOVA and Student's t-test with SPSS statistical software. RESULTS A highly significant rise in the salivary sialic acid, serum sialic acid and serum protein was noted in OSCC subjects compared to controls. Salivary protein, serum and salivary sugar did not show any significance. Furthermore, serum and salivary sialic acid levels were found to be significantly increased with increasing level of histopathological grading. CONCLUSION The present study showed a significant increase in serum sialic acid, salivary sialic acid and serum protein from control to OSCC and suggests that these markers may be reliable in diagnosis and predicting prognosis.

Abstract
Using a lectin, Achatinin-H, having preferential specificity for glycoproteins with terminal 9-O-acetyl sialic acid derivatives linked in α2-6 linkages to subterminal N-acetylgalactosamine, eight distinct disease-associated 9-O-acetylated sialoglycoproteins was purified from erythrocytes of visceral leishmaniaisis (VL) patients (RBC(VL)). Analyses of tryptic fragments by mass spectrometry led to the identification of two high-molecular weight 9-O-acetylated sialoglycoproteins as human erythrocytic α- and β-spectrin. Total spectrin purified from erythrocytes of VL patients (spectrin(VL)) was reactive with Achatinin-H. Interestingly, along with two high molecular weight bands corresponding to α- and β-spectrin another low molecular weight 60 kDa band was observed. Total spectrin was also purified from normal human erythrocytes (spectrin(N)) and insignificant binding with Achatinin-H was demonstrated. Additionally, this 60 kDa fragment was totally absent in spectrin(N). Although the presence of both N- and O-glycosylations was found both in spectrin(N) and spectrin(VL), enhanced sialylation was predominantly induced in spectrin(VL). Sialic acids accounted for approximately 1.25 kDa mass of the 60 kDa polypeptide. The demonstration of a few identified sialylated tryptic fragments of α- and β-spectrin(VL) confirmed the presence of terminal sialic acids. Molecular modelling studies of spectrin suggest that a sugar moiety can fit into the potential glycosylation sites. Interestingly, highly sialylated spectrin(VL) showed decreased binding with spectrin-depleted inside-out membrane vesicles of normal erythrocytes compared to spectrin(N) suggesting functional abnormality. Taken together this is the first report of glycosylated eythrocytic spectrin in normal erythrocytes and its enhanced sialylation in RBC(VL). The enhanced sialylation of this cytoskeleton protein is possibly related to the fragmentation of spectrin(VL) as evidenced by the presence of an additional 60 kDa fragment, absent in spectrin(N) which possibly affects the biology of RBC(VL) linked to both severe distortion of erythrocyte development and impairment of erythrocyte membrane integrity and may provide an explanation for their sensitivity to hemolysis and anemia in VL patients.
