Sorption phenomena of PCBs in environment

Sensitive determination of polychlorinated biphenyls from beverages based on switchable solvent microextraction: A robust methodology

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a kind of hazardous persistent organic contaminants and widely present in nature due to large consumption in the past. Although PCBs have been banned in many countries of the world, they are still present at trace level in food and water samples. It is of significant value to establish reliable enrichment and detection method. Based on the conversion of the hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity from heptanoic acid under alkali and acid, increasing the contact area between heptanoic acid and PCBs, a new switchable solvent micro-extraction method for PCBs from beverages was developed with good extraction efficiency using heptanoic acid as the extractant prior to gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). The key parameters that had impact on enrichment of PCBs were investigated in detail. Under the optimal conditions, a good linearity can be achieved in a concentration range of 0.01-20 μg L^-1 with the correlation coefficients of 0.9978-0.9994. Limits of detection for PCB28, PCB53, PCB206 were 3 ng L^-1 and PCB118 was 5 ng L^-1 while other target PCBs were 2 ng L^-1. Intra-day and inter-day precisions were in the range of 1.9-4.2% and 2.1-4.2％(relative standard deviation, RSD, n = 6), respectively. The real sample spiked recoveries of the targets were in the range of 93.2-114.3％ (n = 3). The enrichment factors were in the range of 16.2-17.9. The results proved that this method was reliable for monitoring trace PCBs in beverage samples and will help for future assessments of impacts on human and animal health.

Understanding the Role of Organic Matter Cycling for the Spatio-Temporal Structure of PCBs in the North Sea

Using the North Sea as a case scenario, a combined three-dimensional hydrodynamic-biogeochemical-pollutant model was applied for simulating the seasonal variability of the distribution of hydrophobic chemical pollutants in a marine water body. The model was designed in a nested framework including a hydrodynamic block (Hamburg Shelf Ocean Model (HAMSOM)), a biogeochemical block (Oxygen Depletion Model (OxyDep)), and a pollutant-partitioning block (PolPar). Pollutants can be (1) transported via advection and turbulent diffusion, (2) get absorbed and released by a dynamic pool of particulate and dissolved organic matter, and (3) get degraded. Our model results indicate that the seasonality of biogeochemical processes, including production, sinking, and decay, favors the development of hot spots with particular high pollutant concentrations in intermediate waters of biologically highly active regions and seasons, and it potentially increases the exposure of feeding fish to these pollutants. In winter, however, thermal convection homogenizes the water column and destroys the vertical stratification of the pollutant. A significant fraction of the previously exported pollutants is then returned to the water surface and becomes available for exchange with the atmosphere, potentially turning the ocean into a secondary source for pollutants. Moreover, we could show that desorption from aging organic material in the upper aphotic zone is expected to retard pollutants transfer and burial into sediments; thus, it is considerably limiting the effectiveness of the biological pump for pollutant exports.

Integrating structural and thermodynamic mechanisms for sorption of PCBs by montmorillonite

Strong sorption of planar nonionic organic chemicals by clay minerals has been observed for important classes of organic contaminants including polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and dioxins, and such affinity was hypothesized to relate to the interlayer hydrophobicity of smectite clays. In batch sorption experiments of two trichlorobiphenyls on homoionic Na-, K-, Cs-montmorillonites, considerably greater sorption coefficient (Kw) was observed for coplanar 3,3',5-trichlorobiphenyl (PCB 36); log Kw for Na-, K-, and Cs-montmorillonite were 3.69, 3.72, and 4.53 for coplanar PCB 36 vs 1.21, 1.46, and 0.87 for the nonplanar 2,2',6-trichlorobiphenyl (PCB 19). MD simulations were conducted utilizing X-ray diffraction determined clay interlayer distances (d-spacing). The trajectory, density distribution, and radial distribution function of interlayer cation, water, and PCBs collectively indicated that the hydrophobic nature of the interlayer regions was determined by the hydration status of exchangeable cations and the associated d-spacing. The sorption free energies calculated for both coplanar and nonplanar PCB molecules by adaptive biasing force (ABF) method with an extended interlayer-micropore two-phase model consisting of cleaved clay hydrates and "bulk water" are consistent with the Gibbs free energies derived from the measured log Kw, manifesting enhanced sorption of coplanar PCBs was attributed to shape selectivity and hydrophobic interactions.

PCBs and its coupling with eco-environments in Southern Yellow Sea surface sediments

In this paper, the spatial distribution and source of the PCBs in surface sediments of the Southern Yellow Sea (SYS) and influencing factors, such as the sediment characteristics (components, relative proportions and total organic carbon contents), and hydrodynamic conditions were analyzed. PCB concentrations in the surface sediments ranged from 518-5848 pg/g, with average values of 1715 pg/g decreasing sharply compared to last year. In the study area, the PCB pollution level in the middle area was the highest, followed by that of the east coast and the west coast, respectively. Although the PCB level in the coastal areas was lower than that in the middle areas, it was proven in our study that the Yellow Sea obtained PCBs by virtue of river inputs. There was a positive and pertinent correlation between the clay proportion and PCB concentrations, and the increase of the PCB concentrations was directly proportional to the increase of TOC contents, with r=0.61, but it was contrary to the sediment grain size. Consequently, the factors controlling PCB distribution had direct or indirect relationships with sediment grain size; moreover, the hydrodynamic conditions determined the sediment components and grain size. In conclusion, hydrodynamic conditions of the Yellow Sea were the most important influencing factors effecting the distribution of PCBs in the surface sediments of the SYS.
