Couple dissatisfaction and eating profile: a mediation effect of coping style

Potential pathways to the onset and development of eating disorders in people with overweight and obesity: A scoping review

OBJECTIVE

To describe pathways to eating disorder (ED) development that have been evaluated in people with overweight and obesity.

METHODS

Four databases were searched to identify studies testing ED development models in adolescents (10-19 years) or adults (>19 years) with overweight and obesity. Explanatory variables were thematically grouped into constructs to describe pathways to each ED outcome.

RESULTS

Of 2226 studies screened, 46 (10 adolescent; 36 adult) were included. Study samples were predominantly female, ranging from 22 to 2236 participants and mean age 12.3 to 56.0 years. In total, 207 explanatory variables were grouped into 18 constructs to summarize 107 pathways that were identified. The most common ED outcome was binge eating (n = 24 studies), followed by global ED psychopathology (n = 10 studies). Across pathways to ED development, negative affect was the most proposed construct, followed by preoccupation with weight/shape and weight stigma.

CONCLUSION

Pathways to ED development in people with overweight and obesity are complex and may include more than 18 different explanatory factors of which negative affect, preoccupation with weight/shape, and weight stigma are the most common. More research on adolescents, males, and the spectrum of ED in diverse populations is required for early identification and intervention.

Emotion regulation across eating pathology: A meta-analysis

The goal of this meta-analysis was to examine the associations between specific emotion regulation abilities (emotional awareness, emotional clarity) and strategies (acceptance of emotions, reappraisal, problem-solving, rumination, avoidance of emotions, and suppression), and eating pathology. A total of 96 studies and 239 effect sizes were included in the analysis. Relations between global and specific emotion regulation abilities and strategies and eating disorders and eating-related symptoms were examined. Results indicated medium-to-large effect sizes for the associations between adaptive emotion regulation and eating disorder and eating-related symptoms, and medium-to-large effect sizes for the associations between maladaptive emotion regulation and eating disorders and eating-related symptoms. In terms of specific emotion regulation strategies, large magnitude of associations were identified for the relations between lack of emotional awareness, clarity, acceptance, reappraisal, problem-solving, and eating disorders. Rumination, avoidance of emotions, and suppression also showed large associations with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Overall, emotion regulation did not differ across eating disorders, a finding supporting the transdiagnostic character of emotion regulation problems in eating pathology. These findings have important theoretical and practical implications for prevention and intervention programs.

The Case for Insurance Reimbursement of Couple Therapy

A case is made for why it may now be in the best interest of insurance companies to reimburse for marital therapy to treat marital distress. Relevant literature is reviewed with a considerable focus on the reasons that insurance companies would benefit from reimbursing marital therapy - the high costs of marital distress, the growing link between marital distress and a host of related physical and mental health problems, as well as the availability of empirically supported treatments for marital distress. This is followed by a focus on the major reasons insurance companies cite for not reimbursing marital therapy, along with a discussion of advances in several growing bodies of research to address these concerns. Main arguments include the direct medical offset costs of couple and family therapy (including for high utilizers of health insurance), and the fact that insurance companies already find it cost effective to reimburse for prevention of other health and psychological problems. This is followed by implications for practitioners and researchers.
