Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of the study was two evaluate the effectiveness of a Peyton teaching approach for rotary root canal instrumentation, in comparison to the traditional "see one-do one" method. MATERIAL AND METHODS Forty undergraduate students were randomly divided into two groups (n = 20). Students of the first group (G1) were taught how to use rotary instrumentation using a modified Peyton method, whilst the second group (G2) watched a teaching video (30 min) on the same subject. Both groups instrumented a plastic block and subsequently both mesial canals of an extracted lower molar. The quality of the root canal instrumentation was analysed by 2 blinded observers on video recordings and x-rays. RESULTS Interobserver correlation was 0.917 (p < .0005; Pearson) for the assessment of the video recordings; students of G1 received significantly more total points (83.55 ± 6.82 points) compared to G2 (69.76 ± 13.82) (p = .001; t-test), the gender had no significant effect on the overall results (p = .444; two-way ANOVA). Significant differences were detected for the categories "initial scouting," "coronal enlargement," "glide path preparation," "preparation using X2 file," "preparation using X3 file" (p < .05; t-test) as well as for the subcategories "sequence of rinse, recapitulation, rinse" (p = .001; t-test) and "recapitulation" (p < .002; t-test). No differences between groups were observed for the radiographic evaluation with respect to working length and canal straightening. CONCLUSION Teaching rotary instrumentation by using the Peyton approach resulted in improved performance of undergraduate students assessed with a checklist-based process analysis. Enhanced implementation of rotary instrumentation could result in better long-term results of students' root canal treatment.

Abstract
Introduction and objectives Future physicians are insufficiently prepared for the topic of transgender identity during their studies. Relevant courses during undergraduate medical education are heterogeneous and not widely established within the curricula. At our university, we investigated if students' knowledge of transgender identity could be increased through medical specialist teaching and teaching delivered by representatives of the trans* community (community-supported teaching). Methods During summer semester 2021 (SS21), the knowledge level on transgender identity of 134 medical students in their fifth clinical semester was evaluated (phase 1). In addition, knowledge gain on gender incongruence through the module "psychiatry" was retrospectively surveyed across two dimensions: 1. diagnostic criteria, 2. treatment/care. During winter semester 2021/22 (WS 21/22), a 90-minute seminar on transgender identity was held either community-supported or by medical specialists (phase 2). Following the psychiatry exam, a re-evaluation was carried out by 115 students (phase 3). Results The students in SS21 did not feel sufficiently educated in the topic of transgender identity through their studies, but rated the relevance of the topic for their later profession as high. Learning gain improved after the introduction of the seminar in WS21/22 compared to the previous semester (both dimensions p<.001). Community-supported and specialist teaching achieved equivalent results. Conclusion One 90-minutes seminar led to a significant learning gain regarding the topic of transgender identity. Community-supported teaching is a promising way to impart knowledge in a qualified manner: Medical faculties should use this form of teaching to convey established knowledge to students in future curricula.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In emergency and critical-care medicine, focused cardiac ultrasound (FoCUS) is indispensable for assessing a patient's cardiac status. The aim of this study was to establish and validate a peer-to-peer-supported ultrasound course for learning FoCUS-specific skills during undergraduate studies at a German university. METHODS A 1-day, 12 teaching units training course was developed for students in the clinical section of medical college, with content based on the current national guidelines. A total of 217 students participated in the study (97 in the course group and 120 in the control group). The course and the participants' subjective assessment of improved skills were evaluated using a questionnaire (7-point Likert scale; 7 = complete agreement and 1 = no agreement at all). Objective learning gains were assessed by tests before and after the course. These consisted of a test of figural intelligence (eight items) and a test of technical knowledge (13 items). RESULTS The course participants experienced significant improvement (P < 0.001) from before to after the course, with a large effect size of η2part = 0.26. In addition, the course group had significantly better results (P < 0.001) than the control group in the post-test, with a medium to large effect size of η2part = 0.14. No significant differences (P = 0.27) were detected in the test section on figural intelligence. The evaluations showed that the participants had a high degree of satisfaction with the course approach, teaching materials, and tutors. There was also a positive increase in their subjective assessment of their own skills, including areas such as technical knowledge, ultrasound anatomy, and performance of the examination. CONCLUSION The results of both the objective learning assessment and the subjective evaluations suggest that a FoCUS course originally intended for qualified physicians is equally suitable for students. With the development and provision of modern digital teaching media, even more students will be able to benefit from this approach in the future.

Abstract
BACKGROUND E-learning is recognised as a useful educational tool and is becoming more common in undergraduate medical education. This review aims to examine the scope and impact of e-learning interventions on medical student learning in clinical medicine, in order to aid medical educators when implementing e-learning strategies in programme curricula. METHODS A systematic review compliant with PRISMA guidelines that appraises study design, setting and population, context and type of evaluations. Specific search terms were used to locate articles across nine databases: MEDLINE/PubMed, ScienceDirect, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, ERIC, Academic Search Complete, CINAHL, Scopus and Google Scholar. Only studies evaluating e-learning interventions in undergraduate clinical medical education between January 1990 and August 2021 were selected. Of the 4,829 papers identified by the search, 42 studies met the inclusion criteria. RESULTS The 42 studies included varied in scope, cognitive domain, subject matter, design, quality and evaluation. The most popular approaches involved multimedia platforms (33%) and case-based approaches (26%), were interactive (83%), asynchronous (71%) and accessible from home (83%). Twelve studies (29%) evaluated usability, all of which reported positive feedback. Competence in use of technology, high motivation and an open attitude were key characteristics of successful students and preceptors. CONCLUSIONS Medical education is evolving consistently to accommodate rapid changes in therapies and procedures. In today's technologically adept world, e-learning is an effective and convenient pedagogical approach for the teaching of undergraduate clinical medicine.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The prevalence of peer-assisted learning (PAL) featuring alongside the core medical curriculum is increasing; however, the evidence base for PAL's efficacy on academic performance is limited. This systematic review of randomised studies of PAL in medical school sets out to assess the impact of PAL on academic outcomes in medical school and evaluate whether PAL confers a benefit in specific educational contexts. METHODS A literature search was conducted across MEDLINE, Ovid Embase, Web of Science and Education Research Complete. Titles and abstracts were screened, and records were selected following strict eligibility criteria. Following full-text assessment for eligibility, two reviewers independently extracted data from the final selection of records and a meta-analysis was performed. Studies were classified using a modified version of Kirkpatrick's levels of learning. Student test scores were standardised by calculating the standardised mean difference (SMD). RESULTS Twenty-seven randomised controlled trials were eligible for inclusion, and twenty-one provided sufficient and complete data to enable meta-analysis. There was a significant improvement in the academic performance of medical students who received PAL compared with those in the control group (SMD = 0.52 [95% confidence interval 0.18-0.85]; p = .003). The impact of PAL was greater amongst clinical medical students (SMD = 0.63; p = .02) than preclinical medical students (SMD = 0.39; p = .08) and when used for teaching practical skills (SMD = 0.69; p = .001) compared with theory (SMD = -0.11; p = .21). Students taught by PAL also achieved better results in assessments conducted more than four weeks after course completion (SMD = 1.20; p = .04). The data values in the Results section have been corrected in this version.] CONCLUSIONS: Medical students experiencing PAL benefit in terms of academic performance, relative to those not receiving PAL. PAL is of greatest value in the clinical stages of training and for practical skills. The long-term outcomes of PAL remain a priority for future research.

Abstract
To evaluate the educational benefits of teaching ultrasound in an elective radiological course for medical students. We conducted a single-center retrospective analysis of a one-week elective ultrasound course in which 39 medical students (25 female; median age 25.8 ± 2.8 years, range 21-35, 4th and 5th years of undergraduate medical education) participated as part of their radiological training. The students completed a pre- and post-course questionnaire using a five-point Likert scale for self-assessment of technical knowledge, confidence in the procedure regarding different organs, motivation for performing ultrasound, and the importance of ultrasound in medical education. The students also assessed the value of ultrasound teaching in the context of their general medical degree. Pre-test and post-test scores showed significantly improved radiology knowledge (p ≤ 0.001) concerning all abdominal organs (liver, spleen, gallbladder, kidney, urinary bladder, aorta and retroperitoneum). A significant improvement was registered in performing ultrasound of peripheral arteries and venous structures (each p = 0.001), and also of the thyroid gland (p = 0.006). General surveys at the end of the elective were overwhelmingly positive, with constructive criticism and complimentary comments. Systematic training in ultrasound markedly improved the students' skills. This was especially pronounced for solid organ structures, while students requested more education regarding the retroperitoneum and vascular structures. Teaching ultrasound in an elective hands-on training course improves anatomical understanding and practical skills associated with increased motivation. The results affirm the necessity and clinical relevance of the course during the radiological training of medical students.

Abstract
The concept of point-of-care ultrasound has been widely accepted owing to the development of portable ultrasound systems and growing body of evidence concerning its extensive utility. Thus, it is reasonable to suggest that training to use this modality be included in undergraduate medical education. Training in ultrasonography helps medical students learn basic subjects such as anatomy and physiology, improve their physical examination skills, and acquire diagnostic and procedural skills. Technological advances such as simulators, affordable handheld devices, and tele-ultrasound systems can facilitate undergraduate ultrasound education. Several reports have indicated that some medical schools have integrated ultrasound training into their undergraduate medical curricula. Jichi Medical University in Japan has been providing medical students with ultrasound education to fulfill part of its mission to provide medical care to rural areas. Vertical integration of ultrasound education into a curriculum seems reasonable to ensure skill retention and improvement. However, several issues have hampered the integration of ultrasound into medical education, including a lack of trained faculty, the need to recruit human models, requisition of ultrasound machines for training, and limited curricular space; proposed solutions include peer teaching, students as trained simulated patients, the development of more affordable handheld devices, and a flipped classroom approach with access to an e-learning platform, respectively. A curriculum should be developed through multidisciplinary and bottom-up student-initiated approaches. Formulating national and international consensuses concerning the milestones and curricula can promote the incorporation of ultrasound training into undergraduate medical education at the national level.

Abstract
Background Both simulation-based training and video-based training serve as educational adjuncts for learning TEE among medical students. In the present study, we hypothesized that simulation-based training would better enhance the performance of medical students in the interpretation of 20 cross-sectional views compared to video-based training. Methods A total of 120 4th-year undergraduate medical students were enrolled in the present study. The study began with a pre-test of all the participants, followed by a 90-min theoretical lecture and a post-test. Subsequently, the participants were randomly divided into the video-based group (Group V) and simulation-based group (Group S). Next, Group V received 60 min of TEE video learning, while Group S received 60 min of TEE simulator training. After the respective training, both the groups undertook the retention-test 1 and retention-test 2, 1 week and 1 month later, respectively. The performance for each test was evaluated by five views, which were selected randomly and, respectively, from a set of 20 cross-sectional views. The primary outcome was the performance of the retention-test 1. Secondary outcomes included: (1) comparison the performances of the pre-test, post-test, and retention-test 2 between two groups; (2) comparison the performances of pre-test and post-test in the same group; (3) comparison the performances of retention-test 1, and retention-test 2 in the same group. Results Better performances were observed in Group S in both retention-test 1 (Group V: 63.2 [52.6, 77.6] vs. Group S: 89.5 [68.4, 100.0], P < 0.001) and retention-test 2 (Group V: 58.0 [48.0, 72.0] vs. Group S: 74.0 [64.0, 80.0], P < 0.001) compared to Group V. No statistically significant differences were observed in the performances of pre-test (Group V: 8.3 [4.2, 12.5] vs. Group S: 8.3 [4.2, 12.5], P = 0.825) or post-test (Group V: 46.2 [38.5, 57.7] vs. Group S: 44.2 [38.5, 56.7], P = 0.694) between the two groups. The improvement had been observed in the post-test, compared with pre-test in the same group, respectively (Group V in post-test: 46.2 [38.5, 57.7] vs. Group V in pre-test: 8.3 [4.2, 12.5], P < 0.001; Group S in post-test: 44.2 [38.5, 56.7] vs. Group S in pre-test: 8.3 [4.2, 12.5], P < 0.001). Abstract
BACKGROUND Ultrasound education is propagated already during medical school due to its diagnostic importance. Courses are usually supervised by experienced faculty staff (FS) with patient bedside examinations or students among each other but often overbooked due to limited FS availability. To overcome this barrier, use of teaching videos may be advantageous. Likewise, peer teaching concepts solely with trained student tutors have shown to be feasible and effective. The aim was to evaluate 1) objective learning outcomes of a combined video-based, student-tutor (ViST) as compared to a FS-led course without media support, 2) acceptance and subjective learning success of the videos. METHODS Two ultrasound teaching videos for basic and advanced abdominal ultrasound (AU) and transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) were produced and six students trained as tutors. Fourth-year medical students (N = 96) were randomized to either the ViST- or FS course (6 students per tutor). Learning objectives were defined equally for both courses. Acquired practical basic and advanced ultrasound skills were tested in an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) using modified validated scoring sheets with a maximum total score of 40 points. Acceptance and subjective learning success of both videos were evaluated by questionnaires based on Kirkpatrick's evaluation model with scale-rated closed and open questions. RESULTS 79 of 96 medical students completed the OSCE and 77 could be finally analyzed. There was no significant difference in the mean total point score of 31.3 in the ViST (N = 42) and 32.7 in the FS course (N = 35, P = 0.31) or in any of the examined basic or advanced ultrasound skill subtasks. Of the 42 ViST participants, 29 completed the AU and 27 the TTE video questionnaire. Acceptance and subjective learning success of both videos was rated positively in 14-52% and 48-88% of the rated responses to each category, respectively. Attendance of either the student or faculty tutor was deemed necessary in addition to the videos. CONCLUSIONS A ViST versus FS teaching concept was able to effectively teach undergraduate students in AU and TTE, albeit acceptance of the teaching videos alone was limited. However, the ViST concept has the potential to increase course availability and FS resource allocation.

Abstract
Background Acquisition of procedures is an important element in health professions education. Traditionally procedures are taught using a "see one - do one" approach. That is a teacher demonstrates and describes a procedure and afterwards the students practice the procedure. A more recent teaching approach for the acquisition of procedural skills was presented by Walker and Peyton. Peyton's teaching approach is a stepwise teaching approach and consists of the following four steps: demonstration, deconstruction, comprehension and performance. The aims of this study were (i) to systematically evaluate the effectiveness of Peyton's 4-step teaching approach on the acquisition of procedural skills in health professions education and (ii) to evaluate whether studies with fewer students per teacher showed a larger between group difference than studies with more students per teacher. Methods We searched in Medline, PsycInfo, Embase and ERIC for eligible studies. Records were screened by two independent reviewers. A random effects meta-analysis was performed to evaluate skill acquisition and time needed to perform the procedures at post-acquisition and retention tests. A meta-regression was used to explore the effect of the number of students per teacher on the estimated effect of the educational interventions. Results An effect size of 0.45 SMD (95% CI [0.15; 0.75]) at post-acquisition and 0.7 SMD (95% CI [-0.09; 1.49]) at retention testing were in favour of Peyton's teaching approach for skill acquisition. The groups using Peyton's teaching approach needed considerably less time to perform the procedure at post-acquisition (SMD: -0.8; 95% [CI -2.13 to 1.62]) and retention (SMD: -2.65; 95% CI [-7.77 to 2.47]) testing. The effectiveness of Peyton's teaching approach was less clear in subgroup analyses using peer teachers. Meta-regression showed that the number of students per teacher was an important moderator variable. Conclusion Peyton's teaching approach is an effective teaching approach for skill acquisition of procedural skills in health professions education. When peer students or student tutors are used as teachers the effectiveness of Peyton's teaching approach is less clear. Peyton's teaching approach is more effective when small groups with few students per teacher are used.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this prospective randomised trial was to assess the impact of the team-based learning approach on basic musculoskeletal ultrasound skills in comparison to both peer-assisted and conventional teaching and to examine the influence of gender and learning style on learning outcomes. METHODS In this prospective randomised trial, we randomly assigned 88 students to 3 groups: team-based learning (n = 19), peer-assisted learning (n = 36) and conventional teaching (n = 33). Pre-existing knowledge was assessed using a multiple-choice (MC) exam. Student performance after completing the course was measured using an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) and a second MC exam. Students were asked to complete Kolb's Learning Style Inventory and to evaluate the course. RESULTS There was a significant gain in theoretical knowledge for all students (p < 0.001). The team-based learning groups' performance proved to be significantly superior on the OSCE (p = 0.001). As gender had no significant effect on practical or theoretical performance, learning style was linked to differences in the practical outcome. An evaluation showed overall satisfaction with the course and with the respective teaching methods. CONCLUSION Team-based learning proved to be superior to peer-assisted and conventional teaching of musculoskeletal ultrasound skills.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Echocardiography is a frequently used imaging modality requiring extensive training to master. In order to develop curriculums and teaching material fully favouring students learning within echocardiography, this study aims to investigate students' experiences of learning echocardiography, focusing on that which is perceived as the main challenges as well as what might aid learning within the area. The findings could serve as a foundation in the development of new teaching material or curriculums. METHODS A qualitative study was performed with data gathered through two audio-recorded focus group interviews with four third year students from the biomedical laboratory programme at Malmö University in each group. Data was analysed by manifest content analysis. RESULTS Findings were clustered into two categories reflecting the main findings in the text - practical skills and bridging the theory-practice-gap. Students expressed that main challenges when initially learning echocardiography were the projections and handling the probe as well as connecting ultrasound physics and measurements to practical application. Things that aided their learning were immediate feedback, "playing" with the ultrasound machine, video lectures, the possibility to swiftly alternate between practice and theory as well as the learning by their mistakes in a risk-free environment. CONCLUSIONS This study shows the main challenges when initially learning echocardiography and what might be helpful during the learning process. These findings may be useful when developing curriculums or new teaching material within echocardiography. One suggestion might be to develop digital resources such as virtual laboratories (vLABs).

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Teaching cardiac ultrasound (CU) image acquisition requires hands-on practice under qualified instructors supervision. We assessed the efficacy of teaching medical students by their previously trained classmates (teaching assistants [TAs]) compared to teaching by expert trainers (cardiologists or diagnostic medical sonographers. METHODS Sixty-six students received 8-hour CU training: 4-hour lectures on ultrasound anatomy and imaging techniques of 6 main CU views (parasternal long [PLAV] and short axis [PSAV]; apical 4-chamber [4ch], 2-chamber [2ch], and 3-chamber [3ch]; and sub costal [SC]) followed by 4 hours of hands-on exercise in groups of ≤5 students under direct supervision of a TA (group A: 44 students) or a qualified trainer (group B: 22 students). Students' proficiency was evaluated on a 6-minute test in which they were required to demonstrate 32 predetermined anatomic landmarks spread across the 6 views and ranked on a 0-100 scale according to a predetermined key. RESULTS The 6-minute test final grade displayed superiority of group A over group B (54±17 vs. 39±21, respectively [p = 0.001]). This trend was continuous across all 6 main views: PLAV (69±18 vs. 54±23, respectively), PSAV (65±33 vs. 41±32, respectively), 4ch (57±19 vs. 43±26, respectively), 2ch (37±29 vs. 33±27, respectively), 3ch (48±23 vs. 35±25, respectively), and SC (36±27 vs. 24±28, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Teaching medical students CU imaging acquisition by qualified classmates is feasible. Moreover, students instructors were superior to senior instructors when comparing their students' capabilities in a practical test. Replacing experienced instructors with TAs could help medical schools teach ultrasound techniques with minimal dependence on highly qualified trainers.
