Abstract
Endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) are widespread contaminants that alter the normal functioning of the endocrine system. While they cause dysfunctions in essential biological processes, it is unclear whether EDCs also impact developmental stability. In the present study, we investigated the occurrence of estrogenic endocrine disrupting compounds in a small watershed of south-central Chile impacted by anthropogenic activities. Then, we assessed their relationship with internal levels of estrogenic active compounds and fluctuating asymmetry (FA), a proxy of developmental stability in organisms with bilateral symmetry, in a native fish species (Trichomycterus areolatus). Yeast estrogenic screen assays were performed to measure estrogenic activity in river sediments and in male fish tissues collected from 17 sites along the Chillán watershed, and geometric morphometrics used to estimate fluctuating asymmetry based on the shapes of 248 fish skulls. Estrogenic activity was detected both in sediments and male fish tissues at concentrations of up to 1005 ng and 83 ng 17β-estradiol equivalent/kg dw, respectively. No significant correlation was found between the two. However, fish tissue estrogenicity, water temperature and dissolved oxygen explained >80% of the FA population variation. By showing a significant relationship between estrogenic activity and FA of T. areolatus, our results indicate that developmental stability can be altered by estrogenic endocrine disruption, and that FA can be a useful indicator of sub-lethal stress in T. areolatus populations.

Abstract
Among-population variance of phenotypic traits is of high relevance for understanding evolutionary mechanisms that operate in relatively short timescales, but various sources of nonindependence, such as common ancestry and gene flow, can hamper the interpretations. In this comparative analysis of 138 dog breeds, we demonstrate how such confounders can independently shape the evolution of a behavioural trait (human-directed play behaviour from the Dog Mentality Assessment project). We combined information on genetic relatedness and haplotype sharing to reflect common ancestry and gene flow, respectively, and entered these into a phylogenetic mixed model to partition the among-breed variance of human-directed play behaviour while also accounting for within-breed variance. We found that 75% of the among-breed variance was explained by overall genetic relatedness among breeds, whereas 15% could be attributed to haplotype sharing that arises from gene flow. Therefore, most of the differences in human-directed play behaviour among breeds have likely been caused by constraints of common ancestry as a likely consequence of past selection regimes. On the other hand, gene flow caused by crosses among breeds has played a minor, but not negligible role. Our study serves as an example of an analytical approach that can be applied to comparative situations where the effects of shared origin and gene flow require quantification and appropriate statistical control in a within-species/among-population framework. Altogether, our results suggest that the evolutionary history of dog breeds has left remarkable signatures on the among-breed variation of a behavioural phenotype.

Abstract
Ecophenotypes reflect local matches between organisms and their environment, and show plasticity across generations in response to current living conditions. Plastic responses in shell morphology and shell growth have been widely studied in gastropods and are often related to environmental calcium availability, which influences shell biomineralisation. To date, all of these studies have overlooked micro-scale structure of the shell, in addition to how it is related to species responses in the context of environmental pressure. This study is the first to demonstrate that environmental factors induce a bi-modal variation in the shell micro-scale structure of a land gastropod. Notodiscus hookeri is the only native land snail present in the Crozet Archipelago (sub-Antarctic region). The adults have evolved into two ecophenotypes, which are referred to here as MS (mineral shell) and OS (organic shell). The MS-ecophenotype is characterised by a thick mineralised shell. It is primarily distributed along the coastline, and could be associated to the presence of exchangeable calcium in the clay minerals of the soils. The Os-ecophenotype is characterised by a thin organic shell. It is primarily distributed at high altitudes in the mesic and xeric fell-fields in soils with large particles that lack clay and exchangeable calcium. Snails of the Os-ecophenotype are characterised by thinner and larger shell sizes compared to snails of the MS-ecophenotype, indicating a trade-off between mineral thickness and shell size. This pattern increased along a temporal scale; whereby, older adult snails were more clearly separated into two clusters compared to the younger adult snails. The prevalence of glycine-rich proteins in the organic shell layer of N. hookeri, along with the absence of chitin, differs to the organic scaffolds of molluscan biominerals. The present study provides new insights for testing the adaptive value of phenotypic plasticity in response to spatial and temporal environmental variations.
