Long-Term Survey of Cadmium and Lead Contamination in Japanese Black Bears Captured in Iwate Prefecture, Japan

Detection of Cd2+ based on Nano-Fe3O4/MoS2/Nafion/GCE sensor

It is necessary to detect cadmium ions in seawater with high sensitivity because the pollution of cadmium ions seriously endangers the health and life of human beings. Nano-Fe3O4/MoS2/Nafion modified glassy carbon electrode was prepared by a drop coating method. The electrocatalytic properties of Nano-Fe3O4/MoS2/Nafion were measured by Cyclic Voltammetry (CV). Differential Pulse Voltammetry (DPV) was used to study the stripping Voltammetry response of the modified electrode to Cd2+. The optimal conditions were determined: In 0.1 mol/L HAc-NaAc solution, the solution pH was 4.2, the deposition potential was - 1.0 V, and the deposition time was 720 s, the membrane thickness was 8 μL. Under the optimum condition, the linear relation of Cd2+ concentration was found in the range of 5-300 μg/L, and the detection limit was 0.053 μg/L. The recovery of Cd2+ in seawater ranged from 99.2 to 102.9%. A composite material with simple operation, rapid response and high sensitivity was constructed for the determination of Cd2+ in seawater.

Tolerance mechanism of Triarrhena sacchariflora (Maxim.) Nakai. seedlings to lead and cadmium: Translocation, subcellular distribution, chemical forms and variations in leaf ultrastructure

Hydroponic experiments were conducted to assess the accumulation, translocation, and chemical forms of lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) in the roots, stems, and leaves of Triarrhena sacchariflora seedlings and the associated variation in leaf ultrastructure. The leaves and leaf ultrastructure showed no significant symptoms of toxicity with 0.05 mM Pb or 0.01 mM Cd exposure for 10d. Chlorosis and wilting were observed in leaves when the Pb and Cd concentration was higher than 0.1 and 0.05 mM in the medium, respectively, as demonstrated by severe ultrastructural modifications at higher concentration in the leaves, such as plasmolysis, cell wall detachment, chloroplast swelling, nuclear condensation, and even nuclear fragmentation. The Pb and Cd concentrations in the roots was significantly higher than those in the stems and leaves. This indicated low Pb and Cd translocation from the roots to the aboveground parts. Subcellular distribution analysis showed that the majority of Pb and Cd was bound to the cell wall, especially in the roots, indicating that the cell wall likely constitutes a crucial storage site for Pb and Cd. This mechanism decreases the translocation of Pb and Cd across membranes and is more effective than vacuolar compartmentation. The majority of Pb and Cd exited in form of insoluble Pb/Cd-pectate or -oxalate complexes in the plant. In conclusion, higher concentrations of Pb or Cd induced premature senescence. High Pb and Cd enrichment was observed in the roots, which decreased the translocation of Pb and Cd from the roots to the aboveground tissues. The immobilization of Pb or Cd by the cell wall is important for plant detoxification and can protect protoplasts from Pb or Cd toxicity. Pb and Cd mainly existed in insoluble Pb/Cd-phosphate or -oxalate complexes, exhibiting low activity and thereby limiting symplastic transport and suppressing toxicity.

Sexual Maturity and Life Stage Influences Toxic Metal Accumulation in Croatian Brown Bears

The influence of reproductive and (early) life stages on toxic metal levels was investigated in the brown bear (Ursus arctos), the largest mammalian predator species in Croatia. The purpose was to examine critical clusters in a population that might be at a higher risk of adverse health effects caused by metals as environmental contaminants. Levels of cadmium, mercury and lead in muscle, liver and kidney cortex of 325 male and 139 female bears, quantified by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, were analysed according to distinct bear life stages (young: cub, yearling, subadult; mature: adult). Metal levels did not differ among sexes in young animals (< 4 years), except for mercury in muscles (higher in females), and adult females had higher cadmium and mercury. A trend of renal cadmium accumulation with age in immature male animals disappeared once they reached maturity, whereas for females this trend has only slowly declined in mature compared to immature bears. In early life stage (< 1 year), bear cubs had lower cadmium, comparable mercury, and higher lead in the kidneys than the bears of the following age category (yearlings). Due to a higher proportion of renal lead transfer from the mother to the cub compared with cadmium, it may be that the high burden of cadmium found in kidneys of older females has lower toxicological concern for their cubs than the lead content. Sex, reproductive, and life stages of bears were confirmed as important in assessing toxic metal burden.

Apex predatory mammals as bioindicator species in environmental monitoring of elements in Dinaric Alps (Croatia)

Tissue element investigations of apex terrestrial mammals are very scarce in Europe. We quantified 16 essential and nonessential elements in the kidney cortex, liver, and muscle tissue of 467 brown bears (Ursus arctos), 125 gray wolves (Canis lupus), one Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx), and three golden jackals (Canis aureus) from Croatia by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Renal cadmium (0.6% of animals) and lead (1%) and hepatic lead (5%) were found in toxicologically relevant levels for mammals only in bears, while the other elements were within normal range. The association of age, sex, season, and region with measured tissue elements in bear and wolf was estimated by multiple regression analyses. Age-related accumulation of cadmium was observed in bears and wolves. Lead tissue content increased with the age of bears but declined in wolves. Female bears and wolves had higher arsenic, iron, and thallium than males in some tissues. Also, cadmium, mercury, copper, zinc, selenium, molybdenum, and uranium were more abundant only in female bears. Male bears had higher potassium, zinc, and magnesium, while male wolves had higher calcium in some tissues compared to female wolves. Seasonal differences were mainly observed for bears' tissues and region-specific differences only in wolves. The bear kidneys had the highest levels of cobalt, copper, molybdenum, cadmium, and lead among the four studied species. The element levels reported for bears and wolves represent baseline values for the Dinaric population.
