Taxonomic Diversity and Functional Traits of Soil Bacterial Communities under Radioactive Contamination: A Review

Studies investigating the taxonomic diversity and structure of soil bacteria in areas with enhanced radioactive backgrounds have been ongoing for three decades. An analysis of data published from 1996 to 2024 reveals changes in the taxonomic structure of radioactively contaminated soils compared to the reference, showing that these changes are not exclusively dependent on contamination rates or pollutant compositions. High levels of radioactive exposure from external irradiation and a high radionuclide content lead to a decrease in the alpha diversity of soil bacterial communities, both in laboratory settings and environmental conditions. The effects of low or moderate exposure are not consistently pronounced or unidirectional. Functional differences among taxonomic groups that dominate in contaminated soil indicate a variety of adaptation strategies. Bacteria identified as multiple-stress tolerant; exhibiting tolerance to metals and antibiotics; producing antioxidant enzymes, low-molecular antioxidants, and radioprotectors; participating in redox reactions; and possessing thermophilic characteristics play a significant role. Changes in the taxonomic and functional structure, resulting from increased soil radionuclide content, are influenced by the combined effects of ionizing radiation, the chemical toxicity of radionuclides and co-contaminants, as well as the physical and chemical properties of the soil and the initial bacterial community composition. Currently, the quantification of the differential contributions of these factors based on the existing published studies presents a challenge.

Microbial community and extracellular polymeric substances analysis of anaerobic granular sludge exposed to selenate, cadmium and zinc

The microbial community and extracellular polymeric substances composition of anaerobic granular sludge exposed to selenate (~10 mg/L), cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) (~2 and 5 mg/L) were investigated by high-throughput sequencing and fluorescence excitation emission matrix (FEEM) spectra, respectively. As a response to selenate, Cd and/or Zn exposure, significant fluorescence quenching of fulvic-like acids and humic-like substances was observed. With selenate, Cd and/or Zn in the influent with respective concentrations of 10, 5 and 5 mg/L, the abundance of the phyla Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Spirochaetae, Cloacimonetes and Synergistetes increased significantly, and the dominant taxa in the anaerobic granular sludge exposed to Se, Cd and/or Zn were Halothiobacillaceae (10.2%), Pseudomonas (8.8%), Synergistaceae (7.7%), Spirochaetaceae (7.2%), Blvii28 wastewater sludge group (6.7%), Telmatospirillum (4.6%), Veillonellaceae (4.3%), Geobacter (4.0%) and Enterobacteriaceae (3.0%). Compared with the inoculum, the abundance of the archaea Methanobacterium and Methanosaeta decreased to below detection limit in the UASB reactor after 116 days exposure to Se, Cd and Zn.

Nitrogen and sulfur fertilizers promote the absorption of lead and cadmium with Salix integra Thunb. by increasing the bioavailability of heavy metals and regulating rhizosphere microbes

Fertilization is an effective agronomic strategy to improve the efficiency of phytoextraction by Salix integra Thunb. However, the specific effects of the simultaneous application of nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) fertilizers in the rhizosphere remain unclear. We investigated the bioavailability of lead (Pb) and Cadmium (Cd) along with the microbial metabolic functions and community structure in the rhizosphere soil of S. integra after the application of N (0, 100, and 200 kg·ha⁻¹·year⁻¹) and S (0, 100, and 200 kg·ha⁻¹·year⁻¹) fertilizers for 180 days. The simultaneous application of N and S fertilizers significantly enhanced the absorption of Pb and Cd by S. integra, whereas this effect was not observed for the single application of N or S fertilizer. The contents of acid-soluble Pb and Cd in the rhizosphere soil significantly increased after either single or combined fertilize applications. The microbial metabolic activity was enhanced by the N and S fertilizers, whereas the microbial diversity markedly decreased. The metabolic patterns were mainly affected by the concentration of N fertilizer. The dominant fungi and bacteria were similar under each treatment, although the relative abundances of the dominant and special species differed. Compared to the N200S100 and N200S200 treatments, the N100S100 and N100S200 treatments resulted in fewer pathogenic fungi and more rhizosphere growth-promoting bacteria, which promoted phytoremediation by S. integra. Redundancy analysis indicated that the pH and nitrate content were the key factors affecting the structure of the microbial community. Collectively, the results suggest interactive effects between N and S fertilizers on the rhizosphere soil, providing a potential strategy for plant-microbial remediation by S. integra.

Enhancement of Uranium Recycling from Tailings Caused by the Microwave Irradiation-Induced Composite Oxidation of the Fe-Mn Binary System

The extraction of uranium (U)-related minerals from raw ore sands via a leaching procedure would produce enormous amounts of tailings, not only causing radioactivity contamination to surroundings but also wasting the potential U utilization. Effective recycling of U from U tailings is propitious to the current issues in U mining industries. In this study, the influence of the composite oxidation of Fe(III) and Mn(VII) intensified by microwave (MW) irradiation on the acid leaching of U from tailings was comprehensively explored in sequential and coupling systems. The U leaching activities from the tailing specimens were explicitly enhanced by MW irradiation. The composite oxidation caused by Fe(III) and Mn(VII) further facilitated the leaching of U ions from the tailing under MW irradiation in two systems. Maximum leaching efficiencies of 84.61, 80.56, and 92.95% for U ions were achieved in the Fe(III)-, Mn(VII)-, and Fe(III)-Mn(VII)-participated coupling systems, respectively. The inappropriateness of the shrinking core model (SCM) demonstrated by the linear fittings and analysis of variance (ANOVA) for the two systems explained a reverse increase of solid cores in the later stage of leaching experiments. The internal migration of oxidant ions into the particle cores enhanced by MW accelerated the dissolution of Al, Fe, and Mn constituents under acidic conditions, which further strengthened U extraction from tailing specimens.

Biological Removal of Se and Cd from Acidic Selenite- and Cadmium-containing Wastewater with Limited Carbon Availability

This study presents a successful treatment of biological acidic Se(IV)- and Cd(II)-containing wastewater via the SBR with limited carbon source (100 mg/L COD). Scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), high solution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) results verified the formation of elemental Se and CdSe nanoparticles in the sludge. The abundance of genera in the microbial community gradually changed over the treatment phases depending on the Se(IV) and Cd(II) exposure with different influent COD concentrations. The taxa of Proteiniclasticum, Clostridium_sensu_stricto_12, Longilinea and Mycobacterium were dominant. Redundancy analysis (RDA) indicates that COD concentrations had the greatest impact on Zoogloea and Pseudomonas by promoting an increased abundance and decreased abundance, respectively. Overall, the results extended our understanding of the mechanisms and microbial community responding for the Se(IV) and Cd(II) removal under limited carbon availability in acidic wastewater.

Designed Core-Shell Fe3O4@Polydopamine for Effectively Removing Uranium(VI) from Aqueous Solution

Adsorbents with the combination of magnetic separation and removal performance are expected for reducing the adverse impact of nuclear pollution. In this study, the core-shell Fe₃O₄@polydopamine (Fe₃O₄@PDA) was successfully synthesized and used for removal of uranium (U(VI)) ion from aqueous solution. The abundant N-containing groups derived from PDA exist as the chelate sites for U(VI) and contribute greatly for U(VI) removal. Experimental results show that Fe₃O₄@PDA (56.39 mg g^-1) exhibits greater sorption capacity for U(VI) removal compared with the pure Fe₃O₄ (9.17 mg g^-1). The sorption isotherm can be well fitted with Freundlich model and the sorption process is endothermic and spontaneous. The removal of U(VI) can be explained by the complexation of U(VI) with -NH-, -NH₂ and C-O in the surface of Fe₃O₄@PDA by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis.

The Effects of Different Lead Pollution Levels on Soil Microbial Quantities and Metabolic Function with/without Salix integra Thunb. Planting

Background and Objectives: Salix integra Thunb., a fast-growing woody species, has been used in phytoremediation in recent years. It has the potential to accumulate high amounts of lead (Pb) in its growth, however, its effects on soil microbial community structure and function during its phytoextraction processes are not well understood, especially at different pollution levels. Materials and Methods: In our study, we set unplanted and planted Salix integra in areas with four levels of Pb treatments (0, 500, 1000, and 1500 mg/kg). After six months of planting, the rhizospheric soil, bulk soil, and unplanted soil were collected. Soil properties and microbes participating in nitrogen and phosphorus cycling were measured, following standard methods. Microbial metabolic functions were assessed using a Biolog-ECO microplate. Results: The bacteria (nitrogen-fixing bacteria, ammonifying bacteria, inorganic phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria, and nitrosobacteria) all increased in the 500 mg/kg treatment and decreased in the 1500 mg/kg treatment compared with the 0 mg/kg treatment, especially in rhizospheric soil. The microbial metabolisms decreased along with the increase of Pb levels, with the exception of the rhizospheric soil with a 500 mg/kg treatment. The metabolic patterns were relative to the pollution levels. The utilization of carbohydrates was decreased, and of amino acids or fatty acids was increased, in the 500 mg/kg treatment, while the opposite occurred in the 1500 mg/kg treatment. The values of soil properties, microbial quantities, and metabolic activities were higher in rhizospheric than bulk soil, while the differences between bulk and unplanted soil were different among the different Pb treatments. The soil properties had little effect on the microbial quantities and metabolic activities. Conclusions: S. integra planting and Pb levels had an interactive effect on the microbial community. In general, S. integra planting promoted microbial quantities and metabolic activity in rhizospheric soil. Lower Pb pollution increased microbial quantities and promoted the utilization of amino acids or fatty acids, while higher Pb concentrations decreased microbial quantities and metabolic activities, and promoted the utilization of carbohydrates.
