A New Type of Ecological Floating Bed Based on Ornamental Plants Experimented in an Artificially Made Eutrophic Water Body in the Laboratory for Nutrient Removal

Evaluating bioretention scale effect on stormwater retention and pollutant removal

Bioretention column studies are commonly used in laboratory to assess the performance of such structures in removal of pollutants and to investigate different conceptions aiming to increase their efficiency. However, no studies were found recommending suitable diameters or sizes, or about the uncertainties related to the transfer of results among the different scales (i.e., among different experiments or from the laboratory to field scale). This study assessed the effect of the varying diameters in experimental bioretention columns on the retention and removal of pollutants from stormwater runoff. Three sets of columns with diameters of 400 mm, 300 mm, and 200 mm were assessed. The results showed that runoff retention (R) was affected by the time interval between stormwater events, but not by the bioretention diameter, although the diameter influenced the variability of R results. The removal of TSS (95%), nitrite (98%), and phosphate (96%) did present variability among the different bioretention diameters. However, the nitrate removal was statistically different among the bioretention columns, with removal efficiency above 50% in the 300-mm and 200-mm columns, while the 400-mm columns acted as a source of nitrate by increasing its concentration in the outflow stormwater by up to 285%, suggesting that the removal of this pollutant can be influenced by the scale effect of the bioretention columns and the experiments with small bioretention diameters may not provide reliable results.

Effect of the Matrix Dam in the Paddy Field Drainage Ditch on Water Purification Based on the Physical Model Test

(1) Setting a matrix dam in the paddy field drainage ditch has been recognized as an effective method to lower the velocity of water discharged from a paddy field in the drainage ditch, which can improve the purification efficiency of the drainage ditch for nitrogen and phosphorus pollutants, but the specific placement and thickness of the matrix dam have not been supported due to the insufficient research results. (2) Three thicknesses of the matrix dam were set in three locations of the physical model of the drainage ditch. By measuring the flow rate and water level in different sections, the optimal layout location and thickness of the matrix dam were determined. (3) When the matrix dam was located in section 1-1, the flow rate from sections A-A to C1-C1 was reduced by 0.159 m/s; when the matrix dam was located in section 2-2, the flow rate was reduced by 0.331 m/s; when the matrix dam was located in section 3-3, the flow rate was reduced by 0.360 m/s. (4) We concluded that the optimal design position of the matrix dam was section 3-3, 9.2 m from the entrance of the water flume, and the optimal design thickness was 0.3 m.

Electric Field-Enhanced Cadmium Accumulation and Photosynthesis in a Woody Ornamental Hyperaccumulator—Lonicera japonica Thunb

The multi-system of electro-phytotechnology using a woody ornamental cadmium (Cd) hyperaccumulator (Lonicera japonica Thunb.) is a new departure for environmental remediation. The effects of four electric field conditions on Cd accumulation, growth, and photosynthesis of L. japonica under four Cd treatments were investigated. Under 25 and 50 mg L⁻¹ Cd treatments, Cd accumulation in L. japonica was enhanced significantly compared to the control and reached 1110.79 mg kg⁻¹ in root and 428.67 mg kg⁻¹ in shoots influenced by the electric field, especially at 2 V cm⁻¹, and with higher bioaccumulation coefficient (BC), translocation factor (TF), removal efficiency (RE), and the maximum Cd uptake, indicating that 2 V cm⁻¹ voltage may be the most suitable electric field for consolidating Cd-hyperaccumulator ability. It is accompanied by increased root and shoots biomass and photosynthetic parameters through the electric field effect. These results show that a suitable electric field may improve the growth, hyperaccumulation, and photosynthetic ability of L.japonica. Meanwhile, low Cd supply (5 mg L⁻¹) and medium voltage (2 V cm⁻¹) improved plant growth and photosynthetic capacity, conducive to the practical application to a plant facing low concentration Cd contamination in the real environment.

Nutrient removal effect and characteristics of integrated floating beds at low temperature

To investigate the effect of combined floating beds on nutrient removal under low temperature, an integrated floating bed with corn flakes (IFB-CF) and an integrated floating bed with light ceramsite (IFB-LC) were constructed in parallel. IFB-LC was used as control group under water temperatures of 9.3-14 °C and a water exchange time of 168 h. Nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiency, the nutrient level of a hydrophyte (Oenanthe javanica), and the microbial population characteristics of the combined floating bed were investigated. For IFB-CF removal efficiencies, the degradation quantities of total nitrogen (TN), NO₃^--N, and NH₄⁺-N for IFB-CF were 13.58 ± 0.67 mg/L, 4.40 ± 0.61 mg/L, and 9.21 ± 0.38 mg/L, respectively; in contrast, degradation quantities for IFB-LC were lower (6.41 ± 1.47 mg/L, 2.15 ± 0.40 mg/L, and 5.95 ± 0.46 mg/L, respectively). The reductions in COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand, using K₂Cr₂O₇ as oxidizer) for IFB-LC and IFB-CF were 86.89% and 66.06%, respectively. Using the MiSeq high throughput sequencing method, we analysed microbial community structure and diversity on the base material surface of the IFB-CF and IFB-LC. The results showed 15 phyla, 165 genera, and 78 families on the surface of the IFB-CF. The phylum, genus, and family with the highest abundances were Proteobacteria (48.29%), Trichococcus (10.39%), and Comamonadaceae (12.45%), respectively. We identified 15 phyla, 144 genera, and 93 families on the surface of the IFB-LC. The phylum, genus, and family with the highest abundances were Proteobacteria (46.10%), Dyadobacter (22.67%), and Cytophagaceae (28.75%), respectively. The Chao, ACE, and Shannon & Simpson indices for the IFB-LC were 4081, 6295, and 5.10, and 0.05, respectively; for the IFB-CF they were 4938, 7461, 5.77, and 0.02, respectively. Catalase (CAT) and Peroxidase (POD) concentrations in Oenanthe javanica for IFB-LC were 35.48 u/gFW/min and 1.03 u/gFW/min, respectively; for IFB-CF they were 32.33 u/gFW/min and 1.25 u/gFW/min, respectively. The nutritional energies of IFB-CF and IFB-LC were 107 kJ/100g and 84 kJ/100g. Using the Mondal model of TN removal, k (half-saturation constant) values for IFB-LC and IFB-CF were 35.67 mg/L and 39.23 mg/L, respectively, with a correlation coefficient (R²) of 0.97.

Cadmium Uptake and Growth Responses of Seven Urban Flowering Plants: Hyperaccumulator or Bioindicator?

The application of flowering plants is the basis of urban forest construction. A newly-found flowering hyperaccumulator is crucial for remediating urban contaminated soil sustainably by cadmium (Cd). This study evaluated growth responses, Cd uptake and bioaccumulation characteristics of seven urban flowering plants. Based on growth responses of these plants, Calendula officinalis L. showed high tolerance to at least 100 mg kg−1 Cd, in terms of significant increase in biomass and with no obvious changes in height. After 60 d exposure to 100 mg kg−1 Cd, the accumulated Cd in shoots of the plant reached 279.51 ± 13.67 μg g−1 DW, which is above the critical value defined for a hyperaccumulator (100 μg g−1 DW for Cd). Meanwhile, the plant could accumulate Cd to as much as 926.68 ± 29.11 μg g−1 DW in root and 1206.19 ± 23.06 μg g−1 DW in plant, and had higher Cd uptake and bioaccumulation values. According to these traits, it is shown that Calendula officinalis L. can become a potential Cd-hyperaccumulator for phytoremediation. By contrast, Dianthus caryophyllus L. is very sensitive to Cd stress in terms of significantly decreased biomass, height and Cd uptake, indicating the plant is considered as a Cd-bioindicator.
