Socioeconomic Relation with Plastic Consumption on 61 Countries Classified by Continent, Income Status and Coastal Regions

Uncovering environmental performance patterns of plastic packaging waste in high recovery rate countries: An example of EU-27

Plastic consumption and its end-of-life management pose a significant environmental footprint and are energy intensive. Waste-to-resources and prevention strategies have been promoted widely in Europe as countermeasures; however, their effectiveness remains uncertain. This study aims to uncover the environmental footprint patterns of the plastics value chain in the European Union Member States (EU-27) through exploratory data analysis with dimension reduction and grouping. Nine variables are assessed, ranging from socioeconomic and demographic to environmental impacts. Three clusters are formed according to the similarity of a range of characteristics (nine), with environmental impacts being identified as the primary influencing variable in determining the clusters. Most countries belong to Cluster 0, consisting of 17 countries in 2014 and 18 countries in 2019. They represent clusters with a relatively low global warming potential (GWP), with an average value of 2.64 t CO2eq/cap in 2014 and 4.01 t CO2eq/cap in 2019. Among all the assessed countries, Denmark showed a significant change when assessed within the traits of EU-27, categorised from Cluster 1 (high GWP) in 2014 to Cluster 0 (low GWP) in 2019. The analysis of plastic packaging waste statistics in 2019 (data released in 2022) shows that, despite an increase in the recovery rate within the EU-27, the GWP has not reduced, suggesting a rebound effect. The GWP tends to increase in correlation with the higher plastic waste amount. In contrast, other environmental impacts, like eutrophication, abiotic and acidification potential, are identified to be mitigated effectively via recovery, suppressing the adverse effects of an increase in plastic waste generation. The five-year interval data analysis identified distinct clusters within a set of patterns, categorising them based on their similarities. The categorisation and managerial insights serve as a foundation for devising a focused mitigation strategy.

Citizen scientists study beach litter along 12,000 km of the East Pacific coast: A baseline for the International Plastic Treaty

Anthropogenic Marine Litter (AML) accumulating on beaches causes damage to coastal ecosystems and high costs to local communities. Volunteers sampled AML on 130 beaches along the central and southern East Pacific coasts, with AML densities ranging from 0.46 to 2.26 items m-2 in the different countries. AML composition was dominated by plastics and cigarette butts, the latter especially in Mexico and Chile. The accumulation of AML in the upper zones of the beaches and substantial proportions of cigarette butts, glass and metal pointed mainly to local sources. Statistical modelling of litter sources on continental beaches revealed that tourism, access and related infrastructure (e.g. parking lots) best explained AML densities, while plastic densities were also influenced by the distance from river mouths and national Gross Domestic Product. Large-scale monitoring can be a useful tool to evaluate the effectiveness of public policies that should primarily focus on land sources.

Potential lifetime effects caused by cellular uptake of nanoplastics: A review

Plastics have been used for about 100 years, and daily-use products composed of plastics are now prevalent. As a result, humans are very easily exposed to the plastic particles generated from the daily-use plastics. However, studies on cellular uptake of nanoplastics in "human cells" have only recently begun to attract attention. In previous studies, definitions of nanoplastics and microplastics were vague, but recently, they have been considered to be different and are being studied separately. However, nanoplastics, unlike plastic particles of other sizes such as macro- and microplastics, can be absorbed by human cells, and thus can cause various risks such as cytotoxicity, inflammation, oxidative stress, and even diseases such as cancer^{82, 83.} and diabetes (Fan et al., 2022; Wang et al., 2023). Thus, in this review, we defined microplastics and nanoplastics to be different and described the potential risks of nanoplastics to human caused by cellular uptake according to their diverse factors. In addition, during and following plastic product usage a substantial number of fragments of different sizes can be generated, including nanoplastics. Fragmentation of microplastics into nanoplastics may also occur during ingestion and inhalation, which can potentially cause long-term hazards to human health. However, there are still few in vivo studies conducted on the health effect of nanoplastics ingestion and inhalation.

Distribution and sources of microplastics in the Beibu Gulf using in-situ filtration technique

The Beibu Gulf is a vital link between China and the ASEAN nations, and microplastic contamination is rising due to fast growth, coastal life, fisheries, and mariculture. The abundance, distribution, and source analyses were conducted at 25 sample points for this study. According to this study, the average MPs was 0.25 ± 0.05 items/m³, ranging from 0.01 items/m³ to 0.89 items/m³. Fibers, white, cellulose, and 0.33-1 mm were abundant in shape, color, composition, and size, respectively. Multi-statistics-based source analysis indicated land-based inputs (packing materials, textile materials, fisheries, and mariculture) were dominant in the Beibu Gulf. In this study, we also acknowledged a comprehensive comparison and convenience between plankton pumps and other conventional designs to collect microplastic samples from water. We suggested that using a uniform design could elevate the data quality of microplastics.

Policy impact on microplastic reduction in China: Observation and prediction using statistical model in an intensive mariculture bay

Plastic pollution in the environment has spurred debate among scientists, policymakers, and the general public over how industrialization and consumerism are wreaking havoc on our ecosystem, but some policies might assist to ameliorate the problem in the near future. In this study, the decision tree classifier and Bayesian Structural Time Series (BSTS) model was used to anticipate the possible sources of microplastics and their near future state in 26 surface sediment and a sediment core, respectively in Sansha Bay, which has been criticized for its intensive mariculture applications. An inventory of microplastics in the sediment core was estimated, and it was discovered that during the previous six decades, an average of 181.95 tons of microplastics were deposited, with an average deposition (by a layer of sediment) of 179.44 tons/cm. According to the DT classifier, mariculture was the primary source of microplastics, whereas urban and industrial areas were the primary sources of POPs. The Bayesian Structural Time Series (BSTS) model revealed a microplastic downward slope, indicating that regional and national strategies implemented might successfully reduce microplastic pollution regionally.

Characteristics of microplastic pollution in golden pompano (Trachinotus ovatus) aquaculture areas and the relationship between colonized-microbiota on microplastics and intestinal microflora

Microplastic (MPs) pollution is a global marine environmental problem. The effects of MPs on the gut microbiota of aquatic organisms have received considerable attention. For example, microbes colonizing MPs in pond cultures alter the structure and function of the intestinal microbes of shrimp and fish. It was hypothesized that bacteria on MPs in natural mariculture areas also interact with the intestinal flora of golden pompano (Trachinotus ovatus) because biofilms can form on the surface of MPs during long-term floating in seawater. To our knowledge, this study is the first to investigate MPs pollution in T. ovatus aquaculture. DNA sequencing and bioinformatics analysis confirmed the effect of microbial colonization of MPs on the intestinal flora of T. ovatus. The MPs detected in the gut wet weight (w.w.) of golden pompano (546 ± 52 items/g) were mainly pellets and fragments of blue or green, whereas the sediment MPs dry weight (d.w.) (4765 ± 116 items/kg) were mainly black fibers. The MPs richness in the sediment gradually increased from the open-sea aquaculture area to the estuarine aquaculture area and was positively correlated with the MPs richness in the intestinal tract of golden pompano. MPs 20-200 μm were the most common in the gut and sediment. The intake of MPs increased the abundance of Proteobacteria and decreased that of Firmicutes in the intestinal flora. The functional compositions of MP-colonizing microbes and gut microbiota were similar, suggesting that the two communities influence each other. Network analysis further confirmed this and revealed that Vibrio plays a key role in the intestinal flora and surface microorganisms of MPs. Overall, the intake of MPs by aquatic animals not only affects the intestinal flora and intestinal microbial function, but also poses potential risks to aquaculture.

Phytotoxicity of particulate matter from controlled burning of different plastic waste types

According to careful estimations, open burning of plastic waste affects app. 2 billion people worldwide. While human health risks have become more and more obvious, much less information is available on the phytotoxicity of these emissions. In our study phytotoxicity of particulate matter samples generated during controlled combustion of different plastic waste types such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyurethane (PUR), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene (PE) was evaluated based on peroxidase levels. While different samples showed different concentration-effect relationship patterns, higher concentration(s) caused decreased peroxidase activities in each sample indicating serious damage.

Assessment and sources identification of microplastics, PAHs and OCPs in the Luoyuan Bay, China: Based on multi-statistical analysis

Luoyuan Bay is a mariculture influenced water body located in southeastern China. Multi-statistical techniques were applied to 21 sampling locations in the bay to identify the sources of microplastics and other pollutants in the sediment. In microplastics detection, fragment was the most abundant shape (~36%), and rayon was the dominant polymer (~59%). The size of more than 48% of total microplastics observed was less than 200 μm. The study showed that the upper part of Luoyuan Bay was dominated by microplastic pollution, while the lower part of the bay was dominated by persistent organic pollutants (PAHs, OCPs). Mariculture is one of the main sources of pollution in Luoyuan Bay. Apart from mariculture, there were additional sources such as industry, land reclamation, port, and so on; industry and land reclamation were the leading sources of microplastics, while port, industry, and mariculture were the primary sources of PAHs and OCPs.
