A computational UV–Vis spectroscopic study of the chemical speciation of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole corrosion inhibitor in aqueous solution

Designing Smart Microcapsules with Natural Polyelectrolytes to Improve Self-Healing Performance for Water-Based Polyurethane Coatings

Active anticorrosive organic coatings adopting microcapsules (MCs) have lately attracted extensive attention as they were proven to be effective to minimize metal corrosions and offer a long-lasting protection performance. Herein, a novel environmental-friendly active corrosion protection system was designed for aluminum alloy 2024 (AA2024) based on water-based polyurethane coatings with the addition of water and alkaline pH-responsive smart MCs, which is fabricated by utilizing 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (2-MBT) as an inhibitor, halloysite clay nanotubes (HNTs) as an inhibitor carrier, and the natural polyelectrolytes ε-poly-l-lysine (ε-PLL) and sodium alginate (SA) as layer-by-layer (LBL) encapsulation polyelectrolytes. Salt spray tests and electrochemical measurements prove that the scratched coatings with embedded MCs possess an excellent self-healing performance by forming an adsorption layer of released 2-MBT on the AA2024 surface, thereby providing over 90% inhibition efficiency within 6 days' immersion. The UV-vis spectrophotometer results further showed that the release of 2-MBT is a three-stage long-term process sensitive to water and alkaline pH value, while the outward release rate is both regulated by the solubility of 2-MBT and the SA layer. The fabricated MCs not only offer a great promise to provide an excellent self-healing performance but also shed light on the future design of advanced MCs on demand based on the LBL technique.

Layered double hydroxides for corrosion-related applications—Main developments from 20 years of research at CICECO

This work describes the main advances carried out in the field of corrosion protection using layered double hydroxides (LDH), both as additive/pigment-based systems in organic coatings and as conversion films/pre-treatments. In the context of the research topic “Celebrating 20 years of CICECO”, the main works reported herein are based on SECOP’s group (CICECO) main advances over the years. More specifically, this review describes structure and properties of LDH, delving into the corrosion field with description of pioneering works, use of LDH as additives to organic coatings, conversion layers, application in reinforced concrete and corrosion detection, and environmental impact of these materials. Moreover, the use of computational tools for the design of LDH materials and understanding of ion-exchange reactions is also presented. The review ends with a critical analysis of the field and future perspectives on the use of LDH for corrosion protection. From the work carried out LDH seem very tenable, versatile, and advantageous for corrosion protection applications, although several obstacles will have to be overcome before their use become commonplace.

Molecular Dynamics Model to Explore the Initial Stages of Anion Exchange involving Layered Double Hydroxide Particles

A classical molecular dynamics (MD) model of fully unconstrained layered double hydroxide (LDH) particles in aqueous NaCl solution was developed to explore the initial stages of the anion exchange process, a key feature of LDHs for their application in different fields. In particular, this study focuses on the active corrosion protection mechanism, where LDHs are able to entrap aggressive species from the solution while releasing fewer corrosive species or even corrosion inhibitors. With this purpose in mind, it was explored the release kinetics of the delivery of nitrate and 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT, a typical corrosion inhibitor) from layered double hydroxide particles triggered by the presence of aggressive chloride anions in solution. It was shown that the delamination of the cationic layers occurs during the anion exchange process, which is especially evident in the case of MBT^-.

Modern Approaches to the Synthesis and Transformations of Practically Valuable Benzothiazole Derivatives

The review is devoted to modern trends in the chemistry of 2-amino and 2-mercapto substituted benzothiazoles covering the literature since 2015. The reviewed heterocycles belong to biologically active and industrially demanded compounds. Newly developed synthesis methods can be divided into conventional multistep processes and one-pot, atom economy procedures, realized using green chemistry principles and simple reagents. The easy functionalization of the 2-NH2 and 2-SH groups and the benzene ring of the benzothiazole moiety allows considering them as highly reactive building blocks for organic and organoelement synthesis, including the synthesis of pharmacologically active heterocycles. The review provides a summary of findings, which may be useful for developing new drugs and materials and new synthetic approaches and patterns of reactivity.

Layered Double Hydroxide Clusters as Precursors of Novel Multifunctional Layers: A Bottom-Up Approach

The specific microstructure of aluminum alloys is herein explored to grow spatially-resolved layered double hydroxide (SR-LDH) clusters on their surface. Upon chemical modification of LDHs via intercalation, adsorption and grafting with different functional molecules, novel surface-engineered surfaces were obtained. Crystal structure and phase composition were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and surface morphology was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and glow discharge optical emission spectrometry (GDOES) were used to correlate structural changes upon ion-exchange and interfacial modifications with chemical composition and surface profiles of the SR-LDH films, respectively. The protection conferred by these films against localized corrosion was investigated at microscale using the scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET). LDH-NO3 phase was obtained by direct growth onto AA2024 surface, as evidenced by (003) and (006) XRD diffraction reflections. After anion exchange of nitrate with 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) there was a decrease in the SR-LDH thickness inferred from GDOES profiles. The subsequent surface functionalization with HTMS was confirmed by the presence of Si signal in XPS and GDOES analyses, leading to an increase in the water contact angle (c.a 144° ± 3°). SVET measurements of the SR-LDH films revealed exceptional corrosion resistance, whereas the bioluminescent bacteria assay proved the anti-microbial character of the obtained films. Overall the results obtained show an effective corrosion protection of the SR-LDHs when compared to the bare substrate and the potential of these films for biofouling applications as new Cr-free pre-treatments.

Remarkable reactivity of alkoxide/acetato-bridged binuclear copper(II) complex as artificial carboxylesterase

Bromo-containing binuclear Schiff base copper(II) complex, Cu₂L(OAc), with an alkoxo/acetato-bridged moiety was employed as a model of carboxylesterases to promote the hydrolytic cleavage of p-nitrophenyl picolinate (PNPP). Furthermore, the reactivity of a mononuclear complex (CuHL) was evaluated for comparing it with that of binuclear one. The results reveal that the as-prepared binuclear Cu₂L(OAc) efficiently accelerated the hydrolysis of PNPP, giving rise to excess four orders of magnitude rate enhancement in contrast to the un-catalyzed reaction. Cu₂L(OAc) represented an enzyme-like bell-shaped pH-responsive kinetic behavior. Moreover, the binuclear one is more reactive than its mononuclear analogue (CuHL) by two orders of magnitude. The total efficiency of Cu₂L(OAc) is about 61-fold than that of its mononuclear analogue, CuHL. In addition, a contrast experiment reveals that binuclear Cu₂L(OAc) displayed good activity in the hydrolysis of PNPP as well another active ester, i.e., S-2-benzothiazolyl 2-amino-alpha-(methoxyimino)-4-thiazolethiolacetate (AE-active ester). Noteworthyly, it was found that mononuclear one inspired more obvious rate enhancement in the hydrolysis of AE-active ester relative to PNPP hydrolysis. The estimated pK _a1 of bound water on the binuclear Cu₂L(OAc) using second derivative method (SDM) is relatively smaller than that for CuHL by a gap of about 0.8 pK unit, which facilitates the hydrolysis of PNPP. Four orders of magnitude rate enhancement was observed for the catalytic hydrolysis of p-nitrophenyl picolinate (PNPP) by one μ-alkoxide/acetato-bridged binuclear copper(II) complex under physiological conditions. Substrate specificity of the resulting binuclear complexes was observed for the hydrolysis of PNPP and AE-active ester.
