Competition between intramolecular hydrogen and pnictogen bonds in protonated systems

Low Valence Triel (I) Systems as Hydrogen Bond Acceptors and their Stability with Respect to Triel (III) Compounds

A theoretical study of the complexes formed by carbene like Al(I), Ga(I), In(I) and Tl(I) compounds with hydrogen bond donors (HBD), XH (HCCH, HSH,HOH, HCN, HCl, HBr, HF, and HNC) have been carried out at MP2 computational level. The isolated triel(I) compounds show a negative region of the molecular electrostatic potential region associated with the triel atom suitable to interact with electron deficient groups. This region is associated to a lone pair based on the ELF analysis and to the location of the HOMO orbital. The complexes are similar to those found in nitrogen heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) with HBD. In addition, the oxidative addition reactions of those complexes to yield the corresponding valence III compounds have been characterized. The Al(III) compounds are much more stable than the corresponding Al(I) complexes. However, the stability of the triel(III) compounds decreases with the size of the triel atom and for the thallium derivatives, the Tl(I) complexes are more stable than the Tl(III) compounds in accordance with the number of the structures found in the CSD. The barrier of the TS connecting the triel(I) and triel(III) systems increases with the size of the triel atoms.

Perturbating Intramolecular Hydrogen Bonds through Substituent Effects or Non-Covalent Interactions

An analysis of the effects induced by F, Cl, and Br-substituents at the α-position of both, the hydroxyl or the amino group for a series of amino-alcohols, HOCH2(CH2)nCH2NH2 (n = 0-5) on the strength and characteristics of their OH···N or NH···O intramolecular hydrogen bonds (IMHBs) was carried out through the use of high-level G4 ab initio calculations. For the parent unsubstituted amino-alcohols, it is found that the strength of the OH···N IMHB goes through a maximum for n = 2, as revealed by the use of appropriate isodesmic reactions, natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis and atoms in molecules (AIM), and non-covalent interaction (NCI) procedures. The corresponding infrared (IR) spectra also reflect the same trends. When the α-position to the hydroxyl group is substituted by halogen atoms, the OH···N IMHB significantly reinforces following the trend H < F < Cl < Br. Conversely, when the substitution takes place at the α-position with respect to the amino group, the result is a weakening of the OH···N IMHB. A totally different scenario is found when the amino-alcohols HOCH2(CH2)nCH2NH2 (n = 0-3) interact with BeF2. Although the presence of the beryllium derivative dramatically increases the strength of the IMHBs, the possibility for the beryllium atom to interact simultaneously with the O and the N atoms of the amino-alcohol leads to the global minimum of the potential energy surface, with the result that the IMHBs are replaced by two beryllium bonds.

Nature of halogen-centered intermolecular interactions in crystal growth and design: Fluorine-centered interactions in dimers in crystalline hexafluoropropylene as a prototype

The wide occurrence of halogen-centered noncovalent interactions in crystal growth and design prompted this study, which includes a mini review of recent advances in the field. Particular emphasis is placed on providing compelling theoretical evidence of the formation of these interactions between sites of positive electrostatic potential, as well as between sites of negative electrostatic potential, localized on the electrostatic surfaces of the bound fluorine atoms in a prototypical system, hexafluoropropylene (C₃ F₆ ), upon its interaction with another same molecule to form (C₃ F₆ )₂ dimers. The existence of σ- and π-hole interactions is shown for the stable dimers. Even so, weakly bound interactions locally responsible in holding the molecular fragments together cannot and should not be overlooked since they are partly responsible for determining the overall geometry of the crystal. The results of combined quantum theory of atoms in molecules, molecular electrostatic surface potential, and reduced density gradient noncovalent interaction analyses showed that these latter interactions do indeed play a role in the stability and growth of crystalline C₃ F₆ itself and the (C₃ F₆ )₂ dimers. A symmetry adapted perturbation theory energy decomposition analysis leads to the conclusion that a great majority of the (C₃ F₆ )₂ dimers examined are the consequence of dispersion (and electrostatics), with nonnegligible contribution from polarization, which together competes with an exchange repulsion component to determine the equilibrium geometries. In a few structures of the (C₃ F₆ )₂ dimer, the fluorine is found to serve as a six-center five-bond donor/acceptor, as found for carbon in other systems (Malischewski and Seppelt, Angew. Chem. Int. Density functional theory studies on a non-covalent interaction system: hydrogen-bonded dimers of zoledronate

A computational study was carried out to characterize the hydrogen-bonded dimers of Zoledronate (ZOL), which is used widely in treating skeletal diseases. The stable conformations, hydrogen bonding interactions, IR spectra, thermodynamic properties, and electronic characteristics of nine possible ZOL dimers were studied using density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/6-311++G** level. The stability of dimers was determined according to the analyses of total electronic energies and hydrogen bonding interactions. The results showed that both the number and intensity of hydrogen bonds played an important role in determining the stability order of dimers, and the hydrogen bonding interactions in dimers resulted in a red shift of hydroxyl vibration with a corresponding increase in intensity. The calculated thermodynamic properties illustrated that the dimerization process can take place spontaneously at room temperature. Natural bond orbital and atoms in molecules analyses revealed that the nature of hydrogen bonding interactions was attributed to the interactions from lone pair orbital n(A) to the antibonding orbital σ*(D-H), and the interactions were closed-shell interactions in hydrogen-bonded dimers of ZOL.
