The molecular electrostatic potential analysis of solutes and water clusters: a straightforward tool to predict the geometry of the most stable micro-hydrated complexes of β-propiolactone and formamide

Probing microhydration-induced effects on carbonyl compounds

Characterizing the microhydration of organic molecules is a crucial step in understanding many phenomena relevant to atmospheric, biological, and industrial applications. However, its precise experimental and theoretical description remains a challenge. For four organic solutes containing a CO bond, and included in the recent HyDRA challenge [T. L. Fischer, M. Bödecker, A. Zehnacker-Rentien, R. A. Mata and M. A. Suhm, Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2022, 24, 11442-11454.], we performed a detailed study of different monohydrate isomers and their properties; these were cyclooctanone (CON), 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinon (DMI), methyl lactate (MLA), and 2,2,2-trifluoroacetophenone (TPH) molecules. As reported in the literature, the O-H elongation shift of the water molecule appears to be a good candidate for characterizing complexation-induced effects. We also show that CO elongation shift and UV-vis spectroscopy can be successfully used for these purposes. Besides, we present a comparative analysis of the strengths of non-covalent interactions within these monohydrated complexes based on interpretative tools of quantum chemistry, including topological analysis of electron density (ρ), topological analysis of electron pairing function, and analysis of the core-valence bifurcation index (CVBI), which exhibits a close linear dependency on ρ. Accordingly, a classification of intermolecular water-solute interactions is proposed.

Cyclopropenylidene: Clustering and Interaction with Water Molecules

Cyclopropenylidene (c-C₃H₂, abbreviated CPD) is a highly reactive, planar, partially aromatic carbene discovered in the interstellar medium, and, also recently, in the outer solar system. It is demonstrated herein on cogent quantum chemical grounds that CPD which possesses an electric dipole moment of 3.4 D is capable of forming stable dimer and trimer clusters through hydrogen-bonding. These attributes of CPD are conducive to the formation of stable hydrogen-bonded conformations with one- and two-water molecules. Having determined its consistency with the second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory MP2, we employ the ωB97xD hybrid density functional theory in conjunction with a 6-311++G(2d,2p) basis set for a credible description of noncovalent interactions involved in clustering. Molecular electrostatic potential (MESP) and characteristic vibrational frequency shifts upon clustering are presented.

Automated Molecular Cluster Growing for Explicit Solvation by Efficient Force Field and Tight Binding Methods

An automated and broadly applicable workflow for the description of solvation effects in an explicit manner is introduced. This method, termed quantum cluster growth (QCG), is based on the semiempirical GFN2-xTB/GFN-FF methods, enabling efficient geometry optimizations and MD simulations. Fast structure generation is provided using the intermolecular force field xTB-IFF. Additionally, the approach uses an efficient implicit solvation model for the electrostatic embedding of the growing clusters. The novel QCG procedure presents a robust cluster generation tool for subsequent application of higher-level (e.g., DFT) methods to study solvation effects on molecular geometries explicitly or to average spectroscopic properties over cluster ensembles. Furthermore, the computation of the solvation free energy with a supermolecular approach can be carried out with QCG. The underlying growing process is physically motivated by computing the leading-order solute-solvent interactions first and can account for conformational and chemical changes due to solvation for low-energy barrier processes. The conformational space is explored with the NCI-MTD algorithm as implemented in the CREST program, using a combination of metadynamics and MD simulations. QCG with GFN2-xTB yields realistic solution geometries and reasonable solvation free energies for various systems without introducing many empirical parameters. Computed IR spectra of some solutes with QCG show a better match to the experimental data compared to well-established implicit solvation models.

Quantum Chemical Microsolvation by Automated Water Placement

We developed a quantitative approach to quantum chemical microsolvation. Key in our methodology is the automatic placement of individual solvent molecules based on the free energy solvation thermodynamics derived from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and grid inhomogeneous solvation theory (GIST). This protocol enabled us to rigorously define the number, position, and orientation of individual solvent molecules and to determine their interaction with the solute based on physical quantities. The generated solute-solvent clusters served as an input for subsequent quantum chemical investigations. We showcased the applicability, scope, and limitations of this computational approach for a number of small molecules, including urea, 2-aminobenzothiazole, (+)-syn-benzotriborneol, benzoic acid, and helicene. Our results show excellent agreement with the available ab initio molecular dynamics data and experimental results.

Microhydration of a Carbonyl Group: How does the Molecular Electrostatic Potential (MESP) Impact the Formation of (H2O)n:(R2C═O)Complexes?

The presence of a carbonyl group in a molecule usually leads to the identification of a π-hole on the molecular electrostatic potential (MESP) of the species. How does this electrophilic site influence the formation of microhydrated complexes? To address this point, a panel of R₂CO solutes with various MESPs was selected, and we identified the structures and properties of several complexes containing one, two, three and six water molecules. The following solutes were considered in the present study: H₂CO, F₂CO, Cl₂CO,(NC)₂CO and H₂C═CO. Geometry optimizations and frequency calculations were carried out at the LC-ωPBE/6-311++G(d,p) level, with the GD3BJ empirical correction for dispersion. For a number of n water molecules around the R₂CO solute, the structure and the features of the most stable (H₂O)_n:(R₂CO) complexes are highly dependent on the MESP of the isolated R₂CO solute. The formation of pi-hole bondings appears to play a decisive role in the initiation of a three-dimensional organization of water molecules around the solute.
