The application of the antibiotic sulfadiazine (SD) in veterinary medicine has created serious environmental issues due to its high mobility and non-degradability. A novel immobilized cell system has been developed and showed significant SD biodegradation potential in soil.

Voltammetric aptasensor for sulfadimethoxine using a nanohybrid composed of multifunctional fullerene, reduced graphene oxide and Pt@Au nanoparticles, and based on direct electron transfer to the active site of glucose oxidase

This work describes a voltammetric and ultrasensitive aptasensor for sulfadimethoxine (SDM). It is based on signal amplification by making use of a multifunctional fullerene-doped reduced graphene oxide nanohybrid. The nanohybrid was coated with poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) to obtain a material (P-C₆₀-rGO) with large specific surface area and a unique adsorption ability for loading it with glucose oxidase (GOx). The coating also facilitates the direct electron transfer between the active site of GOx and the glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The P-C₆₀-rGO were then modified with Pt@Au nanoparticles, and the thiolated SDM-binding aptamer was immobilized on the nanoparticles. On exposure of the modified GCE to a solution containing SDM, it binds to the aptamer. The results were recorded through the signal responses generated from the redox center of GOx (FAD/FADH₂) by cyclic voltammetry at a scan rate of 100 mV·s^-1 from -0.25 to -0.65 V. Accordingly, The sensor has good specificity and stability, and response is linear in the 10 fg·mL^-1 to 50 ng·mL^-1 SDM concentration range with a detection limit of 8.7 fg·mL^-1. Impact of Veterinary Pharmaceuticals on the Agricultural Environment: A Re-inspection

The use of veterinary pharmaceuticals (VPs) is a result of growing animal production. Manure, a great crop fertilizer, contains a significant amount of VPs. The investigation of VPs in manure is prevalent, because of the potential risk for environmental organisms, as well as human health. A re-evaluation of the impact of veterinary pharmaceuticals on the agricultural environment is needed, even though several publications appear every year. The aim of this review was to collate the data from fields investigated for the presence of VPs as an inevitable component of manure. Data on VP concentrations in manure, soils, groundwater and plants were collected from the literature. All of this was connected with biotic and abiotic degradation, leaching and plant uptake. The data showed that the sorption of VPs into soil particles is a process which decreases the negative impact of VPs on the microbial community, the pollution of groundwater, and plant uptake. What was evident was that most of the data came from experiments conducted under conditions different from those in the environment, resulting in an overestimation of data (especially in the case of leaching). The general conclusion is that the application of manure on crop fields leads to a negligible risk for plants, bacteria, and finally humans, but in future every group of compounds needs to be investigated separately, because of the high divergence of properties.

Recent advances in sample preparation techniques and methods of sulfonamides detection - A review

Sulfonamides (SAs) have been the most widely used antimicrobial drugs for more than 70 years, and their residues in foodstuffs and environmental samples pose serious health hazards. For this reason, sensitive and specific methods for the quantification of these compounds in numerous matrices have been developed. This review intends to provide an updated overview of the recent trends over the past five years in sample preparation techniques and methods for detecting SAs. Examples of the sample preparation techniques, including liquid-liquid and solid-phase extraction, dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction and QuEChERS, are given. Different methods of detecting the SAs present in food and feed and in environmental, pharmaceutical and biological samples are discussed.

The development of a microwave-assisted extraction method for the determination of sulfonamide antibiotics in sediments and soils

A microwave-assisted extraction technique was developed for the determination of nine sulfonamide antibiotics (sulfaguanidine, sulfacetamide, sulfadiazine, sulfathiazole, sulfapyridine, sulfamethazine, sulfamerazine, sulfamethoxazole, and sulfadimethoxine) in six sediments and soils of varying organic carbon content. Method optimization was performed using Lake Erie sediment and revealed the optimum extraction solvent to be methanol, with an extraction time of 45 min. After extraction, samples were “cleaned up” via filtration and quantified using LC-MS/MS spectroscopy. Method calibration curves were constructed in each environmental solid with sulfonamides ranging from 10 to 2000 ng/g; method detection limits were typically in the sub- to low nanograms per gram range. Method validation entailed spiking each solid at three different concentrations spanning the calibration curve (40, 300, and 800 ng/g); generally, method accuracy for spiked solids exceeded 80%, with precision being within 20%. Finally, we extracted sulfonamides from environmental solids (two sediments and one soil) that had been aged for 21 days and found that our method accuracy remained in excess of 80%. Moreover, absolute recoveries generally agreed with method accuracies (at the 95% confidence interval) in all environmental solids, demonstrating the efficiency of our microwave-assisted extraction procedure and its suitability for application to environmental samples.

Short-term extractability of sulfadiazine after application to soils

The long-term environmental fate of the veterinary antibiotic sulfadiazine (SDZ) in soils is determined by a reversible sequestration into a residual fraction and an irreversible formation of non-extractable residues (NER), which can be described as first-order rate processes. However, the concentration dynamics of the resulting fractions of SDZ in soil show an unexplained rapid reduction of extractability during the first 24 h. We therefore investigated the short-term extractability of SDZ in two different soils under different SDZ application procedures over 24 h: with and without manure, for air-dried and for moist soils. In all batches, we observed an instantaneous loss of extractability on a time scale of minutes as well as kinetically determined sequestration and NER formation over 24 h. Data evaluation with a simple kinetic model led to the conclusion that application with manure accelerated the short-term formation of NER, whereas sequestration was very similar for all batches.

Analytical sonochemistry; developments, applications, and hyphenations of ultrasound in sample preparation and analytical techniques

Ultrasonic assistance is one of the great successes of modern analytical chemistry, which uses this energy for a variety of purposes in relation to sample preparation and development of methods for the analysis of numerous contaminants including organic and inorganic compounds. This review will attempt to provide an overview of more recent applications of ultrasound in different environmental and biological samples such as food, soil and water as well as a brief description of the theoretical understanding of this method. Also, the possibility of coupling ultrasound with other analytical techniques will be discussed.
