Visualisation and characterisation of ageing induced changes of polymeric surfaces by spectroscopic imaging methods

Accelerated artificial aging and color stability in resin-based cements

The aim of this study was to determine color change after accelerated artificial ageing (AAA) of different composite cements that are used with veneers. Five cylindrical test specimens, 15 mm in diameter and 2 mm thick, were made from a single layer of each of the following: RelyX Veneer 3M ESPE (RX), Paracore White Coltene (PC), Solocem White Opaque Coltene (SO), Resin Duo Cement Densell (DC), Panavia V5 Paste Kuraray Noritake (PA) and Panavia F2.0 Kuraray Noritake (PF) (30 specimens altogether). The specimens were light cured following manufacturers' instructions using a Coltolux LED (Coltene) unit. Initial color was determined using an Easyshade - Vita Zahnfabrik Spectrophotometer. Then, the specimens were subjected to AAA for two weeks (336 hours) with cycles of 4 hours of UV light at 60 °C and 4 hours of vapor condensation at 50 °C, successively, after which color was recorded again. Color change was determined for each specimen according to the differenceinshadeon the Vita scale before and after AAA. Results were analyzed using Kruskal Wallis test. Mean and standard deviation for each group were: RX 8.40 (1.52); PC 8.60 (3.13); SO 6.40 (3.51); DC 10.00 (0.00); PA 7.60 (3.29); PF 2.00 (0.00). The Kruskal Wallis test showed significant difference for material (p<0.05), and comparison of means showed difference between Panavia F2.0 and the other materials. A table providing equivalence between the Vita Classic and CIELAB scales was used to transfer the recorded colors to the CIELAB scale, and the color difference ΔE was calculated for each group, where ΔL, Δa and Δb are the differences in the L, a and b values before and after the AAA. The mean and standard deviation were analyzed statistically by the ANOVA test and Tukey's test. Mean and standard deviation for each group were: RX 14.94 (2.02); PC 14.51 (4.02); SO 12.08 (4.53); DC 16.31 (0.00); PA 10.9 (3.38); PF 7.24 (0.00). The ANOVA test showed significantdifferenceformaterial (p<0.05). Tukey's test showed two groups (PF-DC, RX, PA). Under the experimental conditions of this study, it can be concluded that accelerated ageing significantly affects the color stability of the resin based cements tested.

Functionalized pink Al2O3:Mn pigments applied in prosthetic dentistry

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The color of dental poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is conventionally rendered by organic and inorganic pigments, which are usually not bonded to the polymer network. Functionalized ceramic pigments can be used to color PMMA, allowing improved chemical interaction with the resin matrix.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to synthesize, functionalize, and characterize pink manganese-doped alumina ceramic pigments. The hypothesis tested was that functionalized ceramic pigments would render pink coloration to a translucent PMMA without jeopardizing its mechanical properties.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Pink alumina powders doped with 1 or 2 mol% of manganese (Al₂O₃:Mn) were prepared by means of a polymeric precursor method. Pigment (Pig.) particles were functionalized with a silica coating method followed by silanation before preparation of PMMA-based composite resins (5 wt% pigment). The color of composite resins (Pig.1% and Pig.2%) and PMMA controls (Pink and translucent [Trans]) was evaluated (CIELab color coordinates), and their mechanical properties were tested (3-point bending).

RESULTS

The microstructure of the pigment particles showed approximately 55-nm nanocrystals of manganese-doped α-alumina clustered into irregular porous particles up to 60 μm. The composite resins and pink PMMA showed similar color parameters (CIE a* pink=20.1, Pig.1%=14.6, Pig.2%=16.0, Trans=0.19, P<.001; CIE b* Pink=17.0, Pig.1%=18.6, Pig.2%=19.0, Trans=2.52, P<.001). No statistical differences were observed in mechanical properties among groups (σ_f pink=98.4, Pig.1%=98.1, Pig.2%=98.8, trans=89.1, P=.136).

CONCLUSIONS

The addition of the functionalized pink ceramic pigments to a translucent PMMA yielded similar coloration to that of the regular pink PMMA used in dentistry and did not jeopardize its mechanical properties.

Influence of Resin Cements on Color Stability of Different Ceramic Systems

Abstract The purpose of this study was to evaluate color stability of two dental ceramics cemented with two resin cements, assessing the color difference (ΔE00) by the measurement of L*, a*, b*, c* and h* of transmittance. The combination of two ceramic system (feldspathic and lithium disilicate) and two resin cements - color A3 (RelyX ARC and Variolink II) resulted in 4 groups (n=5). Ten disks-shaped specimens were fabricated for each ceramic system (10x1.5 mm), etched with hydrofluoric acid (10%) and silanized prior to cementation. The color analysis was performed 24 h after cementation of the samples and after 6 months of storage in relative humidity by means of spectrophotometry. The ΔE00 values were analyzed statistically by two-way ANOVA followed by the Tukey test (p<0.05). One-way ANOVA were calculated for the means of individual color coordinates (L*, a*, b*, c* and h*). Two-way ANOVA showed that only the ceramic factor was significant (p=0.003), but there was no difference for the cement factor (p=0.275) nor for the ceramic/cement interaction (p=0.161). The feldspathic ceramic showed the highest values of ΔE00. Variations in L*, a*, b*, c* and h* were more significant for feldspathic ceramic. In conclusion, storage alters similarly the optical properties of the resin cements and feldspathic porcelain was more susceptible to cement color change after aging.

Spectroscopic investigations on thin adhesive layers in multi-material laminates

Three different spectroscopic approaches, Raman linescans, Raman imaging, and attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR FT-IR) imaging were evaluated for the visualization of the thin adhesive layers (3-6 μm) present in polymeric photovoltaic backsheets. The cross-sections of the multilayer laminates in the original, weathered, and artificially aged samples were investigated spectroscopically in order to describe the impact of the environmental factors on the evenness and thickness of the adhesive layers. All three methods were found to be suitable tools to detect and visualize these thin layers within the original and aged polymeric laminates. However, as the adhesive layer is not very uniform in thickness and partly disintegrates upon weathering and/or artificial aging, Raman linescans yield only qualitative information and do not allow for an estimation of the layer thickness. Upon increasing the measuring area by moving from one-dimensional linescans to two-dimensional Raman images, a much better result could be achieved. Even though a longer measuring time has to be taken into account, the information on the uniformity and evenness of the adhesive layer obtainable using the imaging technique is much more comprehensive. Although Raman spectroscopy is known to have the superior lateral resolution as compared with ATR FT-IR spectroscopy, the adhesive layers of the samples used within this study (layer thickness 3-6 μm) could also be detected and visualized by applying the ATR FT-IR spectroscopic imaging method. However, the analysis of the images was quite a demanding task, as the thickness of the adhesive layer was in the region of the resolution limit of this method. The information obtained for the impact of artificial aging and weathering on the adhesive layer obtained using Raman imaging and ATR FT-IR imaging was in good accordance.
