A novel miniaturized extraction capillary for determining gaseous formaldehyde by high-performance liquid chromatography

Preparation of Pt and bamboo charcoal co-modified TiO2 for formaldehyde sensing at room temperature

Anatase TiO2 has evolved into one of the most attractive materials for gas sensing owing to its strong oxidation activity and excellent sensing properties. In this study, we prepared Pt and bamboo charcoal co-modified nano-TiO2 using a one-pot hydrothermal process and applied it to detect formaldehyde. The successful incorporation of the precious metal Pt and bamboo charcoal onto TiO2 was confirmed by scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometer, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Detailed analysis revealed a homogeneous distribution of Pt nanoparticles and bamboo charcoal on the TiO2 surface, which significantly improved the surface area and facilitated gas adsorption. These modifiers significantly enhanced the response of TiO2 to formaldehyde, for instance, the response signal increased fourfold, while the response time decreased from 91 to 68 s. The sample with 0.5@Pt and 0.5@C bamboo charcoal performed the best, showcasing the synergistic effect of metal nanoparticles and carbonaceous materials on gas-sensing properties. Our work highlighted the potential of using biomass-derived carbon to enhance the detection of formaldehyde and demonstrated the importance of material characteristics in designing effective gas sensors.

Simultaneous Extraction and Determination of Volatile Organic Compounds and Semi-volatile Organic Compounds in Indoor Air Using Multi-bed Solid Phase Extraction Device

A method for the simultaneous extraction and determination of indoor volatile compounds, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs), was developed using a multi-bed solid phase extraction (SPE)-type collection device. The collection device was prepared by packing styrene-divinylbenzene polymer particles and activated carbon particles. The collected analytes were completely desorbed by passing 7 mL of acetone, and the solvent was then injected into a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry without the concentration process. Because the proposed method does not require ultrasonication and a concentration process of eluted solvent, quantitative determination of a relatively volatile compound could be achieved. The total recovery including extraction and elution recoveries for all the investigated analytes were in the range from 91.6 to 109%. The limit of quantification was less than 4.0 ng L^-1 for all the investigated analytes, and relative standard deviations of the peak area of the analytes in indoor air were less than 12%. The collection device could be reused for over 50 samplings.

Polyethylene Terephthalate Nanofiber Sheet as the Novel Extraction Medium for the Determination of Phthalates in Water Samples

A novel extraction medium was developed by packing polyethylene terephthalate (PET) nanofiber sheet having a diameter of 500 nm into a stainless-steel capillary of 0.8 mm inner diameter. The nanofiber was prepared by a carbon dioxide (CO₂) laser supersonic multi-drawing method, which has a significantly higher surface area than the original PET fiber. A nanofiber sheet was prepared by winding the nanofibers. Extraction of phthalates in water samples by a PET nanofiber-packed extraction capillary was investigated using a conventional high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Water samples were introduced into the extraction capillary with a low pressure. After extracting the water sample, the extraction capillary was directly connected to a six-port valve of HPLC with a PEEK nut, and the extracted analytes were desorbed, followed by injection to an HPLC system using a small amount of organic solvent. In this manuscript, the fundamental performance of the nanofiber sheet-packed extraction capillary for the extraction of organic compounds in water samples is quantitatively evaluated using a conventional HPLC system.

Determination of formaldehyde in aqueous samples with a miniaturized extraction capillary coupled to high-performance liquid chromatography

A novel analytical method for determining formaldehyde (FA) in aqueous samples was developed with a miniaturized extraction capillary in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The extraction capillary was prepared by packing silica gel particles in a stainless steel capillary of 0.8 mm i.d. and 1.6 mm o.d. A derivatization reagent of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) was impregnated on the silica gel particles by pumping a solution of DNPH to the capillary. Two extraction methods; dynamic extraction and purge-and-trap (PT) methods, were investigated for derivatizing and extracting FA from water samples onto the silica gel in the extraction capillary. The extraction capillary was directly connected to a six-port valve, and then desorption of the derivative from the capillary and injection to conventional HPLC system were simultaneously achieved with a flow of acetonitrile through the capillary. In the dynamic extraction, FA was determined with a simple sample preparation procedure, and the limit of detection (LOD) was 18 μg L(-1) at a sample volume of 20 mL, while several limitations were found in the method, such as bleeding of the derivatization reagent and the corresponding derivatized FA from the capillary during the sample load/extraction process. The sensitivity was significantly improved by introducing a PT technique, where the LOD was 6.9 μg L(-1) at a sample volume of 20 mL with a sampling time of approximately 20 min. With the PT method, successful recoveries of FA were confirmed for spiked tap water, river water and fruit juice samples.
