Abstract
Bio-based and biodegradable materials play a vital role in a sustainable and green economy. These materials must exhibit properties that are similar to or better than the properties of oil- or coal-based materials and require sophisticated synthesis technologies and detailed knowledge of structure-property correlations. For comprehensive molecular structure elucidation, advanced analytical methods, including coupled and hyphenated techniques that combine advanced fractionation and information-rich spectroscopic detectors, are an indispensable tool. One important tool for fractionating complex polymers regarding molecular size is size exclusion chromatography. For fractionating polymers with regard to chemical composition, solvent (or temperature) gradient HPLC has been developed. The combination of different liquid chromatography methods in comprehensive two-dimensional HPLC setups is another important tool. Today, a toolbox of HPLC methods is in place that enables the fractionation of complex bio-based and biodegradable polymers according to the most important molecular parameters including molecular size, composition, functionality, and branching. Here, an overview of the different techniques and some major applications is presented. Some representative developments in the field are discussed, and different techniques, experimental protocols, and applications are highlighted.

Abstract
This research aimed to evaluate atmospheric pressure immersion (API) and vacuum impregnation (VI) of non-hydrolyzed and hydrolyzed tara gallotannins (TE and THE) extracts and the purification process by leaching with ethyl acetate (TE-L and THE-L) and absorption chromatography on the acrylamide (AA) mitigation in potato chips. Better results were obtained with THE-L at hydrolysis degrees of 48.5 and 99.8 % and API with AA reduction of 57.9 and 61.7 %, respectively (p > 0.05), while with TE-L, AA reduction was 29.2 %. Instead, THE-L and TE-L with VI reduced AA by 70.3 and 66.4 %, respectively. In potato chips subjected to THE-L treatment, phenolic compounds and ABTS AC increased in 86.5-91.0 % and 71.0-103.2 %, respectively compared to the control. The main antioxidants were identified in the extracts and in potato chips. Tara gallotannins are an interesting alternative to mitigate AA formation and to enhance the antioxidant power of potato chips.

Abstract
Ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) is a rapid separation technique capable of extracting complementary structural information to chromatography and mass spectrometry (MS). IMS, especially in combination with MS, has experienced inordinate growth in recent years as an analytical technique, and elicited intense interest in many research fields. In natural product analysis, IMS shows promise as an additional tool to enhance the performance of analytical methods used to identify promising drug candidates. Potential benefits of the incorporation of IMS into analytical workflows currently used in natural product analysis include the discrimination of structurally similar secondary metabolites, improving the quality of mass spectral data, and the use of mobility-derived collision cross-section (CCS) values as an additional identification criterion in targeted and untargeted analyses. This review aims to provide an overview of the application of IMS to natural product analysis over the last six years. Instrumental aspects and the fundamental background of IMS will be briefly covered, and recent applications of the technique for natural product analysis will be discussed to demonstrate the utility of the technique in this field.

Abstract
Plants may contain beneficial or potentially dangerous substances to humans. This study aimed to prepare and evaluate a new drug delivery system based on a glass-ionomer-Brazilian pepper extract composite, to check for its activity against pathogenic microorganisms of the oral cavity, along with its in vitro biocompatibility. The ethanolic Brazilian pepper extract (BPE), the glass-ionomer cement (GIC) and the composite GIC-BPE were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), and thermal analysis. The BPE compounds were identified by UPLC–QTOF–MS/MS. The release profile of flavonoids and the mechanical properties of the GIC-BPE composite were assessed. The flavonoids were released through a linear mechanism governing the diffusion for the first 48 h, as evidenced by the Mt/M∞ relatively to \documentclass[12pt]{minimal}

The ATR-FTIR analysis indicated that a chemical bond between the GIC and BPE components may have occurred, but the compressive strength of GIC-BPE does not differ significantly from that of this glass-ionomer. The GIC-BPE sample revealed an ample bacterial activity at non-cytotoxic concentrations for the human fibroblast MRC-5 cells. These results suggest that the prepared composite may represent an alternative agent for endodontic treatment.

Abstract
Tannins are a group of polyphenols found in fruits, leaves, trees, etc., well known in the leather industry and in apples, persimmons and grapes, because of their capacity to interact with other polyphenols or other components either from the food product or from saliva. Prior to being able to interact with other compounds, tannins have to be extracted from the food matrix, which depends on their chemistry, as well as the chemical structure of other components, such as cell wall material and proteins. Vitis vinifera grapes are commonly grown around the world and are used in winemaking, providing good quality wines with different levels of tannins responsible for the final wine’s astringency. Many studies have focused on tannins extractability and retention with cell wall material, and the reactivity of tannins with proteins in Vitis vinifera grapes and wine, but there are very few reports for other Vitis species. However, depending on the environmental characteristics of certain regions, Vitis hybrid grapes are grown and used to produce wines more and more. This review focuses on the comparison of the chemistry of tannins, and their reactivity with other macromolecules in Vitis species.
