Preparation and characterization of magnetic molecular imprinted polymers with ionic liquid for the extraction of carbaryl in food

Biomass waste-derived magnetic material coated with dual-dummy-template molecularly imprinted polymer for simultaneous extraction of organophosphorus and carbamate pesticides

An eco-friendly biomass waste-derived magnetic material coated with a dual-dummy-template molecularly imprinted polymer was fabricated using aqueous ethanol as a green porogen, lower amounts of toxic compounds as template molecules, and tyrosine and tryptophan as biocompatible binary monomers. The binding characteristics and selectivity of the material toward pesticides were assessed. High adsorption capacities ranging from 150.11 to 509.09 mg g-1 and imprinting factors reaching 2.2 were achieved within just 30 s. The material was applied for extraction of organophosphorus and carbamate pesticides prior to HPLC analysis. Under the optimum conditions, low limits of detection and quantitation were achieved, with ranges of 0.05-1.49 μg/L and 0.18-5.00 μg/L, respectively. The established approach enables efficient analysis of vegetable and fruit samples, yielding satisfactory recoveries ranging between 80 and 110 %. The method showed promise as an analytical method for the sensitive enrichment of pesticide residues in vegetable and fruit samples.

Preparation of biochar-based surface molecularly imprinted polymers and evaluation of their selective adsorption and removal of carbaryl from rice and corn

The residue of carbaryl in food is a threat to human health. In this study, activated soybean shell biochar (A-SBC) was used as a carrier, methacrylic acid (MAA) was used as a functional monomer, and carbaryl was used as a template molecule to synthesize the activated biochar surface molecularly imprinted polymer (A-SBC@MIP). The synthesized A-SBC@MIP was characterized by SEM, FT-IR, XRD and XPS techniques, and then applied as adsorbent for carbaryl removal. The adsorption capacity of A-SBC@MIP for carbaryl was 8.6 mg‧g-1 and the imprinting factor was 1.49 at the optimum ionic strength and pH. The kinetic and isothermal data indicated that it had fast mass transfer rate and high binding capacity(Qmax=47.9 mg‧g-1). A-SBC@MIP showed good regenerative properties and the adsorption of carbaryl was excellent in its structural analogues. A solid-phase extraction (SPE) column composed of A-SBC@MIP was developed for the detection of rice and corn under optimized conditions, with recoveries of 93-101% for the spiked carbaryl. The limit of detection (LOD) of the method was 3.6 μg‧kg-1 with good linearity (R2=0.994) in the range of 0.01-5.00 mg‧L-1. The results show that the developed MIPs-SPE can enrich carbaryl from food samples as a specific and cost-effective method.

Nonlinear regression for treating adsorption isotherm data to characterize new sorbents: Advantages over linearization demonstrated with simulated and experimental data

This paper demonstrates that determining adsorption capacity and affinity through data fitting of adsorption isotherms by nonlinear regression (NLR) is more accurate than linearized Langmuir equations. Linearization errors and the subjective choice of data points used to apply the linear regression analysis may deviate the fitted adsorption parameters (constants and adsorption capacities) from the expected values. The deviation magnitude increases for heterogeneous sorbents such as environmental particles and molecularly imprinted polymers, which adsorb by more than one sorption mechanism or adsorption sites of diverse chemical natures. For instance, Lineweaver-Burk linearization of isotherms simulated considering the presence of two adsorption sites (distinct adsorption energies) provides excellent linear regression fittings but for only one kind of adsorption site. Contrary, Scatchard and Eadie-Hoffsiee's equations indicate the presence of more than one kind of adsorption site, but if the difference between the adsorption constants is not significant, the choice of points used to perform the computation becomes subjective. On the contrary, NLR analysis considers all the adsorption points (experimental or simulated), providing objective criteria to define if more than one kind of site or retention mechanism rules the adsorbed amounts of analyte. The fitted constants have smaller deviations from the expected values than those obtained by linearization. In addition to the simulated data, the enhanced robustness of the NLR was demonstrated in the determination of the adsorption capacity and adsorption affinity of a humic acid sample towards Cu²⁺ at different pH.

Anion Exchange Affinity-Based Controllable Surface Imprinting Synthesis of Ultrathin Imprinted Films for Protein Recognition

Anion exchange affinity-based controllable surface imprinting is an effective approach to overcome low imprinting efficiency and high non-specific binding capacity. The template proteins were first immobilized on the anchored tetraalkylammonium groups of the nanoparticles via anion exchange affinity-based interactions, enabling monolayer sorption using a low template concentration. The combined use of surface-initiated photoiniferter-mediated polymerization to precisely control the imprinted film thickness, allowing the formation of homogeneous binding cavities, and the construction of effective binding sites resulted in a low non-specific binding capacity and high imprinting efficiency. The obtained imprinted films benefited from the anion exchange mechanism, exhibiting a higher imprinting factor and faster binding rate than the reference material. Binding tests revealed that the binding strength and selective recognition properties could be tuned to a certain extent by adjusting the NaCl concentration. Additionally, in contrast to the harsh template elution conditions of the covalent immobilization approach, over 80% of the template molecules were readily removed from the imprinted films using supersonic elution with an aqueous mixture of NaCl and HAc. Introducing template immobilization by anion exchange interactions to the synthesis of imprinted materials may provide a new approach for effective biomacromolecular imprinting.

Application, advancement and green aspects of magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers in pesticide residue detection

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have added a vital contribution to food quality and safety with the effective extraction of pesticide residues due to their unique properties. Magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs) are a superior approach to overcome stereotypical limitations due to their unique core-shell and novel composite structure, including high chemothermal stability, rapid extraction, and high selectivity. Over the past two decades, different MMIPs have been developed for pesticide extraction in actual food samples with a complex matrix. Nevertheless, such developments are desirable, yet the synthesis and mode of application of MMIP have great potential as a green chemistry approach that can significantly reduce environmental pollution and minimize resource utilization. In this review, the MMIP application for single or multipesticide detection has been summarized by critiquing each method's uniqueness and efficiency in real sample analysis and providing a possible green chemistry exploration procedure for MMIP synthesis and application for escalated food and environmental safety.

Fabrication and characterization of magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer based on deep eutectic solvent for specific recognition and quantification of vanillin in infant complementary food

A magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer based on deep eutectic solvent was synthesized for specific identification and quantification of vanillin. Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-CC and deep eutectic solvent were applied as the carrier of magnetic material and functional monomer, respectively. According to composition and morphology characterizations and adsorption kinetics, the imprinted polymer had excellent advantages on adsorption capacity and identification specificity for vanillin compared with non-imprinted polymer, while its reusability still remained stable. According to the high-performance liquid chromatography, the detection method based on imprinted polymer produced satisfactory analytical results. The limit of quantification was 0.2 μg·mL^-1. The mean spiked recoveries for vanillin ranged from 91.2% to 100.2% with intra- and inter-day precision were both less than 7.2%. Compared to traditional extraction methods, this method presented best adsorption and extraction performances. In summary, the method could be further applied to the specific separation and quantification of vanillin in infant complementary food.

Highly effective pre-concentration of thymol and carvacrol using nano-sized magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer based on experimental design optimization and their trace determination in summer savoury, Origanum majorana and Origanum vulgare extracts

To ascertain thymol and carvacrol in pharmaceutical syrups, a valid and effective magnetic molecular imprinted polymer dispersive solid phase microextraction (MMIP-DSPME) process was developed in this study, which was in combination with a high performance liquid chromatography-ultra violet (HPLC-UV) technique for the assessment of thymol and carvacrol separation and pre-concentration. Contact time, eluent kind and volume, pH, the mass of the MMIP were all taken into consideration as key factors. Design expert and multi-objective response surface methodology (RSM) were used to optimize these variables. The mass of the MMIP, sample pH, eluent kind, time of sorption, the volume of eluent, and time of elution were 10 mg, 6, acetonitrile, 28 min, 200 µL, and 5.5 min, respectively, for the maximum extraction recovery of the analytes. The limit of detection (LOD) was 0.042 ng mL^-1 at the optimal conditions, while the value for the limit of quantification (LOQ) was 0.140 ng mL^-1. At the optimized conditions for thymol and carvacrol, the suggested MMIP sorbent had sorption capacities of 64.1 and 72.6 mg g^-1, respectively. Furthermore, for triplicate measurements, the linear dynamic range (LDR) was 0.40-5000 ng mL^-1, and the method's accuracy (RSD %) was 6.26%. The saturation magnetization for the MMIP was 19.0 emu g^-1 obtained by VSM, allowing the sorbent to be separated quickly. The sorption experiments confirmed the large sorption capacity of the MMIP for thymol and carvacrol, as well as its homogeneous binding sites. The extraction recovery for thymol and carvacrol was 96.9-103.8% and 96.6-105.4%, respectively, at all spiked amounts (20, 100, 200, and 500 ng mL^-1). The findings of seven desorption-regeneration cycles using MMIP demonstrated the high stability of the sorbent. The MMIP revealed a particular behavior of sorption for thymol and carvacrol, implying a selective, simple, effective, and flexible analytical method.

A magnetic phosphorescence molecularly imprinted polymers probe based on manganese-doped ZnS quantum dots for rapid detection of trace norfloxacin residual in food

This paper reports the development of a novel probe based on magnetic room-temperature phosphorescence quantum dots with molecularly imprinted polymers (MQD-MIPs) for the rapid detection of trace norfloxacin (NFX) residual in complex food matrix. The highly selective probe was constructed by surface molecular imprinting technology using magnetic materials (Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles) as core, Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (Mn-ZnS QDs) as phosphorescent materials, NFX as template, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane as functional monomer, and tetraethoxysilane as crosslinking agent. The as-obtained MQD-MIPs were characterized in detail by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, and vibrating sample magnetometer. A magnetic strength of 37.64 emu g^-1 was recorded. Also, the probe displayed excellent room temperature phosphorescence properties with excitation/emission peaks at 300/590 nm. Under the optimized conditions, the detection time was less than 40 min, phosphorescence intensity varied linearly with concentration from 1 to 90 μg·L^-1, and detection limit reached as low as 0.80 μg·L^-1. Furthermore, the MQD-MIPs-based probe successfully detected norfloxacin residues in spiked fish and milk samples with recoveries of 90.92-111.53% and RSD <7%, outperforming the standard control method-HPLC-FLD (recoveries of 85.89-118.28%).

[Research progress in application of immobilized ionic liquid materials to separation by solid-phase extraction]

Ionic liquids are low-temperature molten salts with almost no vapor pressure, and they are composed of organic cations and inorganic anions. Ionic liquids are characterized by the properties of good chemical stability, high solubility, designable structure, high conductivity and so on. The physicochemical properties of an ionic liquid depend on the nature and size of the cation and anion, which confer unique characteristics; hence, these reagents are also termed "designed extractants." As a new class of green solvents, ionic liquids are potential replacements to traditional volatile organic solvents used for extraction; for this reason, ionic liquids have attracted the attention of scientists. Research on the methods of preparation and applications of ionic liquids is being diversified, and they are extensively used in catalytic chemistry, photoelectron chemistry, materials chemistry, analytical chemistry, etc. By functional guiding design, the structures of ionic liquids, especially the imidazole ring cations, can be easily grafted with active groups such as hydroxyl, amino, carboxyl, and cyano groups, so that interactions between the ionic liquids and target molecules can be promoted via the formation of π-π bonds, hydrogen bonds, ionic bonds, and van der Waals forces. In addition, ionic liquids can be readily immobilized on solid carriers by physical or chemical means in order to obtain a new solid material with ionic liquids embedded internally or decorated on the surface. Furthermore, ionic liquids could be converted into ionic liquid-immobilized composite materials by impregnation, grafting, etc. The resulting composites not only suffer minimal loss of ionic liquids but also retain the typical characteristics of the ionic liquids and solid materials, thus showing improved mass transfer performance and better adsorption performance. Immobilized materials are characterized by high enrichment efficiency, high adsorption capacity, good stability, and strong extraction selectivity, as well as the presence of numerous recognition sites and high utilization rate of ionic liquids. In recent years, they have been widely used as solid-phase extraction adsorption materials for the separation of small organic molecules. This review introduces common immobilization methods and the characteristics of ionic liquid-immobilized materials, as well as their application in solid-phase extraction. In this paper, methods for the immobilization of ionic liquids with solid carriers such as silica gel, molecular sieves, molecularly imprinted polymers, graphene oxide, and magnetic nanomaterials are summarized, and the application of ionic liquid-immobilized materials in solid-phase extraction is reviewed. The target substances include alkaloids, flavonoids, polyphenols, and other natural active components as well as common drug molecules, organic pesticides, and other organic small molecular compounds. The properties, applications, and separation mechanisms of ionic liquids immobilized with various carriers are systematically introduced. Literature survey shows that the distribution of the binding active sites of ionic liquid-immobilized materials to the target molecules is more uniform, which increases the adsorption capacity of the materials. The adsorption efficiency of ionic liquid-immobilized materials is related to the type of ionic liquid, amount of adsorption material, concentration of the sample solution, adsorption temperature, solution pH, flow rate of the eluent, and type and amount of the eluting solvent. The existing disadvantages of ionic liquids, such as simple structures, insufficient basic theoretical research, and unsatisfactory extraction degree in complex matrixes would also be discussed. The corresponding solutions would be presented with the aim of providing guidance for the application of ionic liquid-immobilized materials in the separation and analysis of targets in complex matrices, thus paving the way for a new direction in the field of extraction and separation.

Role of Ionic Liquids in Composites in Analytical Sample Preparation

Ionic liquids (ILs) are a group of non-conventional salts with melting points below 100 °C. Apart from their negligible vapor pressure at room temperature, high thermal stability, and impressive solvation properties, ILs are characterized by their tunability. Given such nearly infinite combinations of cations and anions, and the easy modification of their structures, ILs with specific properties can be synthesized. These characteristics have attracted attention regarding their use as extraction phases in analytical sample preparation methods, particularly in liquid-phase extraction methods. Given the liquid nature of most common ILs, their incorporation in analytical sample preparation methods using solid sorbents requires the preparation of solid derivatives, such as polymeric ILs, or the combination of ILs with other materials to prepare solid IL-based composites. In this sense, many solid composites based on ILs have been prepared with improved features, including magnetic particles, carbonaceous materials, polymers, silica materials, and metal-organic frameworks, as additional materials forming the composites. This review aims to give an overview on the preparation and applications of IL-based composites in analytical sample preparation in the period 2017–2020, paying attention to the role of the IL material in those composites to understand the effect of the individual components in the sorbent.

Application of surface-imprinted polymers supported by hydroxyapatite in the extraction of zearalenone in various cereals

Surface-imprinted polymers supported by hydroxyapatite (HAP@MIPs) were prepared using coumarin-3-carboxylic acid and naringenin as dummy template molecules of zearalenone (ZEA). HAP@MIPs were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, particle size distribution analysis, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The adsorption performance was studied. The results showed that it could reach the adsorption equilibrium within 6 min. The adsorption amount could reach 6.77 μg mg^-1, while the concentration was 20 μg mL^-1. The self-made solid-phase extraction (SPE) columns were prepared with HAP@MIPs as sorbents for the separation and purification of ZEA in cereal samples. The method was established by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The recoveries were in the range of 70.09-101.88%; the relative standard deviation was 2.06-8.47%. Finally, millet, coix lachryma, and corn were placed under extreme conditions to produce ZEA. The method was used to extract and analyze ZEA in the above samples. The results showed that self-made SPE columns with HPLC could be used for the separation and enrichment of ZEA in real samples. Graphical abstract.
