Hydrophilic deep eutectic solvents modified phenolic resin as tailored adsorbent for the extraction and determination of levofloxacin and ciprofloxacin from milk

Molecularly imprinted resin modified with ionic liquid for dispersive filter extraction and determination of perfluoroalkyl acids in eggs

Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are emerging pollutants that endangers food safety. Developing methods for the selective determination of trace PFAAs in complex samples remains challenging. Herein, an ionic liquid modified porous imprinted phenolic resin-dispersive filter extraction-liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (IL-PIPR-DFE-LC-MS/MS) method was developed for the determination of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) in eggs. The new IL-PIPR adsorbent was prepared at room temperature, which avoids the disorder and instability of the template at high temperatures. The imprinting factor of IL-PIPR for PFOA and PFOS exceeded 7.3. DFE, combined with IL-PIPR (15 mg), was used to extract PFOA and PFOS from eggs within 15 min. The established method exhibits low limits of detection (0.01-0.02 ng/g) and high recoveries (84.7%-104.7%), which surpass those of previously reported methods. This work offers a new approach to explore advanced imprinted adsorbents for PFAAs, efficient sample pretreatment technique, and analytical method for pollutants in foods.

Possibilities of an Electronic Nose on Piezoelectric Sensors with Polycomposite Coatings to Investigate the Microbiological Indicators of Milk

Milk and dairy products are included in the list of the Food Security Doctrine and are of paramount importance in the diet of the human population. At the same time, the presence of many macro- and microcomponents in milk, as available sources of carbon and energy, as well as the high activity of water, cause the rapid development of native and pathogen microorganisms in it. The goal of the work was to assess the possibility of using an array of gas chemical sensors based on piezoquartz microbalances with polycomposite coatings to assess the microbiological indicators of milk quality and to compare the microflora of milk samples. Piezosensors with polycomposite coatings with high sensitivity to volatile compounds were obtained. The gas phase of raw milk was analyzed using the sensors; in parallel, the physicochemical and microbiological parameters were determined for these samples, and species identification of the microorganisms was carried out for the isolated microorganisms in milk. The most informative output data of the sensor array for the assessment of microbiological indicators were established. Regression models were constructed to predict the quantity of microorganisms in milk samples based on the informative sensors' data with an error of no more than 17%. The limit of determination of QMAFAnM in milk was 243 ± 174 CFU/cm3. Ways to improve the accuracy and specificity of the determination of microorganisms in milk samples were proposed.

Sulfonic acid-functionalized covalent organic frameworks as the coating for stir bar sorptive extraction of fluoroquinolones in milk samples

Sulfonic acid-functionalized covalent organic frameworks (COF-SO₃) as a coating of stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) for capturing three fluoroquinolones from milk have been developed. The COF-SO₃ material was characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and infrared spectroscopy. Milk without any typical treatments like protein precipitation and defatting was only diluted five times with water for test. Combined with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), a SBSE-HPLC method was established for detecting fluoroquinolones in milk samples. The corresponding wide linear ranges (4.00-500.0 µg L^-1), low detection limits (1.20-2.62 µg L^-1), good test repeatability (RSD < 5.2%), and acceptable enrichment factors (56.2-61.5) were implemented for three fluoroquinolones. The analytical method was applied to determine trace targets and provided satisfactory results. Furthermore, the research displayed satisfied reproducibility for bar-to-bar (RSD < 6.5%) and batch-to-batch (RSD < 8.6%) tests.

Removal of antibiotics from milk via ozonation in a vortex reactor

Antibiotics (ABX) residues occur frequently in milk, causing considerable wastage of medicated milk and serious economic losses, and making the issue a burden for the dairy industry. Improper disposal of medicated milk harms dairy production, animal welfare, and the environment. This work studies the use of ozonation in a vortex reactor for removing ceftiofur hydrochloride (CEF), sulfamonomethoxine sodium (SMM), marbofloxacin (MAR) and oxytetracycline (OTC) from milk. In terms of residual concentration, O₃ efficiency and the degradation kinetics of the various O₃-involving processes in the vortex reactor, ABX removal via ozonation is better using stronger vortexing, which induces hydrodynamic cavitation. CEF undergoes the fastest degradation, followed by SMM, MAR, and OTC. High ABX hydrophobicity favors ABX degradation via ozonation, O₃/H₂O₂, and O₃/Na₂S₂O₈. ABX oxidation by ^•OH at the O₃ gas-bubble/milk interface is the principle degradation pathway, except for MAR. ABX degradation follows pseudo-first-order kinetics and is affected by initial ABX concentration, O₃ concentration/flow rate, reaction temperature, and milk components to varying degrees. Under optimal ozonation conditions, ABX residues meet the maximum limits as set by the European Commission and no antimicrobial activity was observed. The decontaminated milk was therefore suggested to be reused as calf food, animal feed, organic fertilizer, etc.
