A novel fluorescence ratio probe based on dual-emission carbon dots for highly selective and sensitive detection of chlortetracycline and cell imaging

Sulfur vacancy defects mediated CdZnTeS@BC heterojunction: Artificial intelligence-assisted self-enhanced electrochemiluminescence molecularly imprinted sensing of CTC

Environmental pollution caused by tetracycline antibiotics is a major concern of global public health. Here, a novel and portable molecularly imprinted electrochemiluminescence (MIECL) sensor based on smartphones for highly sensitive detection of chlortetracycline (CTC) has been successfully established. The high-performance ECL emitter of biomass carbon (BC) encapsulated CdZnTeS (CdZnTeS@BC) was successfully synthesized by hydrothermal. The enhanced ECL performance was ascribed to the introduction of the BC and increased the overall electrical conductivity of the nanoemitter, as well as increased the number of sulfur vacancies and doping on the surface of the emitter based on density functional theory calculations. An aniline-CTC molecular imprinted polymer was synthesized on the surface of the CdZnTeS@BC modified electrode by in-situ electropolymerization. The decrease in MIECL signal was attributed to the increase in impedance effect. The MIECL nanoplatform enabled a wide linear relationship in the range of 0.05-100 μmol/L with a detection limit of 0.029 μmol/L for spectrometer sensors. Interestingly, the light emitted during the MIECL reaction can be captured by a smartphone. Thus, machine learning was used to screen the photos that were taken, and color analysis was carried out on the screened photos by self-developed software, thus achieving a portable, convenient, and intelligent sensing mode. Finally, the sensor obtains satisfactory results in the detection of actual samples, with no significant differences from those of liquid chromatography.

Fluorimetric determination of tetracycline antibiotics in animal derived foods using boron and nitrogen co-doped ceria-based nanoparticles

An innovative synthesis of boron and nitrogen co-doped ceria-based nanoparticles (B/N-CeFNPs) with bright blue fluorescence emission is reported using the hydrothermal method. Based on the aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) effect between B/N-CeFNPs and chlortetracycline (CTC), a rapid detection method for CTC through fluorescence enhancement was developed. In addition, through the electron transfer process (ET), fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) effect and static quenching between B/N-CeFNPs and oxytetracycline (OTC), a ratio fluorescence strategy for detecting OTC was generated. The fluorescence of B/N-CeFNPs at 410 nm can be effectively quenched by OTC, and new fluorescence emission appears at a wavelength of 500 nm. B/N-CeFNPs showed good linear responses with CTC and OTC in the range 0.1-1 µM and 1-40 µM, respectively. This system was used to simultaneously detect the CTC and OTC in milk and honey, realizing multi-residues detection of TCs in actual samples by using the same ceria-based fluorescence nanomaterial.

Glutathione S-transferase templated copper nanoclusters as a fluorescent probe for turn-on sensing of chlorotetracycline

Hereby, facile-green copper nanoclusters templated by glutathione S-transferase (GST-CuNCs) have been innovatively synthesized via a simple one-pot stirring method at room temperature. The as-prepared nanoclusters exhibited uniform size with satisfactory fluorescence intensity, good stability and low cytotoxicity. Significantly, the fluorescence of the obtained GST-CuNCs could be considerably enhanced by the addition of chlorotetracycline (CTC) rather than other analogues of CTC, which was ascribed to the aggregation-induced enhancement caused by the interaction between CTC and GST. The enhanced fluorescence intensity demonstrated a good linear correlation with the CTC concentration in the range of 30-120 μM (R2 = 0.99517), and the low detection limit was 69.7 nM. Furthermore, the proposed approach showed favorable selectivity and anti-interference toward CTC among prevalent ions and amino acids. Additionally, this nanoprobe was also applied to the quantitative detection of CTC in serum samples with satisfactory outcomes, which demonstrated excellent prospects for practical applications.

A Review of Dual-Emission Carbon Dots and Their Applications

Carbon dots (CDs), as a rising star among fluorescent nanomaterials with excellent optical properties and fascinating dual-emission characteristics, have attracted increasing attention in sensing, bio-imaging, drug delivery, and so on. The synthesis of dual-emission CDs (DE-CDs) and the establishment of ratiometric fluorescence sensors can effectively diminish background interference and provide more accurate results than single-emission CDs. Although DE-CDs have generated increased attention in many fields, the review articles about DE-CDs are still insufficient. Therefore, we summarized the latest results and prepared this review. This review first provides an overview of the primary synthesis route and commonly used precursors in DE-CDs synthesis. Then, the photoluminescence mechanism behind the dual-emission phenomenon was discussed. Thirdly, the application of DE-CDs in metal cation detection, food safety analysis, biosensing, cell imaging, and optoelectronic devices has been extensively discussed. Finally, the main challenges and prospects for further development are presented. This review presents the latest research progress of DE-CDs synthesis and its application in ratiometric sensing; hopefully, it can help and encourage researchers to overcome existing challenges and broaden the area of DE-CDs research.

A sensitive multicolor fluorescence sensing strategy for chlorotetracycline based on bovine serum albumin-stabilized copper nanocluster

Fluorescent probes with on-site visual detection function have received extensive attention in the detection of chlortetracycline (CTC), which was widely used in aquaculture and animal husbandry. Copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) with excellent optical properties were prepared using bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a template, and a multicolor fluorescence strategy based on BSA-stabilized Cu NCs (BSA-Cu NCs) for detecting CTC was proposed. BSA-Cu NCs had a red emission at 640 nm. After the addition of CTC, the red emission of BSA-Cu NCs gradually decreased for internal filtering effect, while the green emission of CTC was significantly enhanced under the sensitization of BSA. This simple sensing process can be achieved in real time by directly mixing the target sample with BSA-Cu NCs, and the detection limit (LOD) of the system for CTC was 12.01 nM. Based on this sensing strategy, a fluorescence film sensing detection platform was constructed to achieve ultra-fast detection of CTC within 30 s. This work provided a fluorescent film sensor with the advantages of portability, ultra-fast and low cost, which provided a feasible alternative for on-site ultra-fast screening of CTC.

Synthesis and application of novel N, Si-carbon dots for the ratiometric fluorescent monitoring of the antibiotic balofloxacin in tablets and serum

A ratiometric fluorescent probe with blue-emission fluorescence based on N, Si-doped carbon dots (N, Si-CDs) for the detection of balofloxacin (BLFX) was synthesized by simple one-pot hydrothermal carbonization using methotrexate and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) as carbon materials. The obtained N, Si-CDs showed dual-emission band fluorescence characterization at 374 nm and 466 nm. Furthermore, the synthesized N, Si-CD probe exhibited evidence of ratiometric fluorescence emission characteristics (F₄₆₆/F₃₇₄) toward BLFX along with a decrease in fluorescence intensity at 374 nm and an increase in fluorescence intensity at 466 nm. Based on this probe, a highly sensitive and fast detection method for the analysis of BLFX has been established with a linear range of 1–60 μM and a low detection limit of 0.1874 μM, as well as a rapid response time of 5.0 s. The developed assay has also been successfully applied for the detection of BLFX in tablets and rat serum.

Construction of ratiometric fluorescence sensor and test strip with smartphone based on dual-emission carbon dots for the specific detection of chlortetracycline

Concerns about environmental and food contamination caused by chlortetracycline (CTC) residues have prompted people to explore efficient and convenient CTC monitoring platforms. However, the reported fluorescent probes generally fail to selectively detect CTC due to the structural similarity of tetracycline antibiotics. Herein, an intrinsic dual-emission carbon dots (D-CDs) ratiometric fluorescence sensor was prepared for highly sensitive and selective determination of CTC over other tetracyclines by one-step synthesis. The sensor exhibited a significant fluorescence enhancement at 425 nm after introducing CTC. The fluorescence "turn on" of the sensing system is due to aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomenon formed by hydrogen bonds and π conjugation promoting the specific recognition of CTC by D-CDs. The linear detection varied from 0.98 to 143.67 ng mL^-1 with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 1.29 ng mL^-1 (R² = 0.998), which was lower than most reported in the literature. The D-CDs sensor was applied to detect CTC in spiked milk, blocked normal human serum, and fish samples with recoveries of 95.5-104.2% and relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 2.6%. Particularly, D-CDs based test papers with a smartphone were prepared for portable and visual detection of CTC by analyzing the various color changes of RGB of fluorescence color, with an LOD of 7.18 ng mL^-1 (R² = 0.9909). The fluorescence sensor designed in this work could be used as a rapid tool with high performance and selectivity for monitoring control in foods.

Water Soluble Silicon Nanoparticles as a Fluorescent Probe for Highly Sensitive Detection of Rutin

In this work, water-soluble fluorescent silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) were prepared by one-pot hydrothermal method using 3-(2-aminoethylamino)propyldimethoxymethylsilane (AEAPDMMS) as a silicon source and amidol as a reducing agent. The prepared SiNPs showed bright green fluorescence, excellent stability against photobleaching, salt tolerance, temperature stability, and good water solubility. Due to the internal filtration effect (IFE), rutin could selectively quench the fluorescence of the SiNPs. Based on such phenomena, a highly sensitive fluorescence method was established for rutin detection. The linear range and limit of detection (LOD) were 0.05-400 μM and 15.2 nM, respectively. This method was successfully applied to detect rutin in the samples of rutin tablets, Sophora japonica, fry Sophora japonica, and S. japonica carbon with satisfactory recovery.
