Innovations in ion-selective optodes: a comprehensive exploration of modern designs and nanomaterial integration

In recent years, ion-selective optodes (ISOs) have remarkably progressed, driven by innovative modern designs and nanomaterial integration. This review explored the development of modern ISO by describing state-of-the-art strategies to improve their sensitivity, selectivity, and real-time monitoring capacity. The review reported the traditional membrane based-optodes, and investigated the latest research, current design principles, and the use of essential components, such as ionophores, indicator dyes, polymer membranes, and nanomaterials, in ISO fabrication. Special attention was given to nanomaterials (e.g., quantum dots, polymer dots, nanospheres, nanorods and nanocapsules) and particularly on how rare earth elements can further enhance their potential. It also described innovative ISO designs, including wearable optodes, smartphone-based optodes, and disposable paper-based optodes. As the pursuit of highly sensitive, selective, and adaptable ion sensing devices continues, this summary of the current knowledge sets the stage for upcoming innovations and applications in different domains (pharmaceutical formulations, medical diagnosis, environmental monitoring, and industrial applications).

Near-Infrared Fluoride Sensing Nano-Optodes and Distance-Based Hydrogels Containing Aluminum-Phthalocyanine

Fluoride ions are highly relevant in environmental and biological sciences, and there is a very limited number of established fluoride chemical sensors. Previous fluoride-selective optodes were demonstrated with metal-porphyrin as the ionophore and required a chromoionophore for optical signal transduction. We demonstrate here novel optical fluoride sensing with nano-optodes containing an aluminum-phthalocyanine complex (AlClPc) as the single active sensing component, simplifying the conventional ion-selective optodes approach. The fluoride nano-optodes were interrogated in the absorbance and fluorescence modes in the near-infrared region, with absorption around 725 nm and emission peaks at 720 and 800 nm, respectively. The nano-optodes exhibited a lower detection limit around 0.1 μM and good selectivity over a range of common anions including ClO4-, Cl-, Br-, I-, SO42-, NO3-, and AcO-. Furthermore, the nano-optodes were physically entrapped in agarose hydrogels to allow distance-based point-of-care testing (POCT) applications. The 3D networks of the agarose hydrogel were able to filter off large particulates in the samples without stopping fluoride ions to reach the nano-optodes. The fluoride concentrations in real samples including river water, mineral water, and groundwater were successfully determined with the distance-based sensing hydrogel, and the results agreed well with those from commercial fluoride electrodes. Therefore, the results in this work lay the groundwork for the optical detection of fluoride in environmental samples without very sophisticated sample manipulation.

Multi-responsive paper chemosensors based on mesoporous silica nanospheres for quantitative sensing of heavy metals in water

Exposure to low concentrations of heavy metal cations seriously harms living organisms, hence they are considered environmental toxins. Portable simple detection systems are required for field monitoring of multiple metal ions. In this report, paper-based chemosensors (PBCs) were prepared by adsorbing 1-(pyridin-2-yl diazenyl) naphthalen-2-ol (chromophore), which recognizes heavy metals, onto filter papers coated with mesoporous silica nano spheres (MSNs). The high density of the chromophore probe on the surface of PBCs resulted in ultra-sensitive optical detection of heavy metal ions and short response time. The concentration of metal ions was determined using digital image-based colorimetric analysis (DICA) and compared to spectrophotometry under optimal sensing conditions. The PBCs exhibited stability and short recovery times. The detection limits determined using DICA of Cd²⁺, Co²⁺, Ni²⁺ and Fe³⁺ were 0.22, 0.28, 0.44, and 0.54 μM; respectively. Additionally, the linear ranges for monitoring Cd²⁺, Co²⁺, Ni²⁺ and Fe³⁺ were 0.44-4.4, 0.16-4.2, 0.8-8.5, and 0.002-5.2 μM; respectively. The developed chemosensors showed high stability, selectivity, and sensitivity for sensing of Cd²⁺, Co²⁺, Ni²⁺ and Fe³⁺ in water under optimum conditions and hold potential for low cost, onsite sensing of toxic metals in water.
