Abstract
The one-pot synthesis of N-doped graphene quantum dots (GQDs), capped with a positively charged polyamine (trien), has been realized through a microwave-assisted pyrolysis on solid L-glutamic acid and trien in equimolar amounts. The resulting positively charged nanoparticles are strongly emissive in aqueous solutions and are stable for months. The interaction with the anionic tetrakis(4-sulphonatophenyl)porphyrin (TPPS4) has been investigated at neutral and mild acidic pH using a combination of UV/vis absorption spectroscopy together with static and time-resolved fluorescence emission. At pH = 7, the experimental evidence points to the formation of a supramolecular adduct mainly stabilized by electrostatic interactions. The fluorescence emission of the porphyrin is substantially quenched while GQDs remain still emissive. On decreasing the pH, protonation of TPPS4 leads to formation of porphyrin J-aggregates through the intermediacy of the charged quantum dots.

Abstract
Simple and accurate in vivo monitoring of Fe3+ is essential for gaining a better understanding of its role in physiological and pathological processes. A novel fluorescent probe was synthesized via in situ solid-state polymerization of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (PEDOT) in the pore channels of a covalent organic framework (COF). The PEDOT@COF fluorescent probe exhibited an absolute quantum yield (QY) 3 times higher than COF. In the presence of Fe3+ the PEDOT@COF 475 nm fluorescence emission, 365 nm excitation, is quenched within 180 s. Fluorescence quenching is linear with Fe3+ in the concentration range of 0-960 μM, with a detection limit of 0.82 μM. The fluorescence quenching mechanism was attributed to inner filter effect (IEF), photoinduced electron transfer (PET) and static quenching (SQE) between PEDOT@COF and Fe3+. A paper strip-based detector was designed to facilitate practical applicability, and the PEDOT@COF probe successfully applied to fluorescence imaging of Fe3+ levels in vivo. This work details a tool of great promise for enabling detailed investigations into the role of Fe3+ in physiological and pathological diseases.

Abstract
Tuning the optical properties of carbon dots (CDs) and figuring out the mechanisms underneath the emissive phenomena have been one of the most cutting-edge topics in the development of carbon-based nanomaterials. Dual-emissive CDs possess the intrinsic dual-emission character upon single-wavelength excitation, which significantly benefits their multi-purpose applications. Explosive exploitations of dual-emissive CDs have been reported during the past five years. Nevertheless, there is a lack of a systematic summary of the rising star nanomaterial. In this review, we summarize the synthesis strategies and optical mechanisms of the dual-emissive CDs. The applications in the areas of biosensing, bioimaging, as well as photoelectronic devices are also outlined. The last section presents the main challenges and perspectives in further promoting the development of dual-emissive CDs. By covering the most vital publications, we anticipate that the review is of referential significance for researchers in the synthesis, characterization, and application of dual-emissive CDs.

Abstract
Due to their appealing properties, nanomaterials have become ideal candidates for the implementation of computing systems. Herein, an optical keypad lock based on a Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) nanodevice is developed. The nanodevice is composed of a green-emission quantum dot with a thick silica shell (gQD@SiO2) and peripheric blue-emission quantum dots with ultrathin silica spacer (bQD@SiO2), on which 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-sulfophenyl)porphyrin (TSPP) is covalently linked. The nanodevice outputs dual emission-based ratiometric fluorescence, depending on the FRET efficiency of bQD-porphyrin pairs, which is highly sensitive to the metalation of TSPP: values are 59.7%, 44.8%, and 10.1% for bQD-Zn(ii)TSPP, bQD-TSPP, and bQD-Fe(iii)TSPP pairs, respectively. As such, by using the competitive chelation-induced transmetalation of TSPP, the nanodevice is capable of implementing a 3-input keypad lock that is unlocked only by the correct input order of Zn(ii) chelator, iron ions, and UV light. Interestingly, the reversible transmetalation of TSPP permits the reset (lock) operation of the keypad lock with the correct input order of ascorbic acid, Zn(ii), and UV light. Application of the nanodevice is exemplified by the construction of paper and cellular keypad locks, respectively, both of which feature signal readability and/or high resettability, showing high potential for personal information identification and bio-encryption applications.

Abstract
It is highly desirable to develop high-performance ratiometric fluorescent probes for SO2 derivative detection and realize their application in biological imaging. In this study, we report the rational design of a novel negative photochromic spiropyran derivative, spiro[azahomoadamantane-pyran] (MAHD-SP), with notable orange fluorescence in its stable ring-opened state without UV regulation. The unsaturated double bond of MAHD-SP underwent the Michael addition reaction of the SO2 derivative, making the fluorescence quenching of MAHD-SP obvious. Then, MAHD-SP, a fluorescent conjugated polymer PFO and a polymeric surfactant PEO113-b-PS49 were used to construct a ratiometric fluorescent polymeric nanoprobe (RFPN) via a coprecipitation method. The probe exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity for the ratiometric detection of SO2 derivatives in pure aqueous solutions. Moreover, the good biocompatibility of RFPN can be used to visualize exogenous and endogenous SO2 derivative generation in living cells.
