Abstract
Solid-phase extraction is one the most useful and efficient techniques for sample preparation, purification, cleanup, preconcentration, and determination of heavy metals at trace levels. In this paper, functionalized MCM-48 nanoporous silica with 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol was applied for trace determination of copper, lead, cadmium, and nickel in water and seafood samples. The experimental conditions such as pH, sample and eluent flow rate, type, concentration and volume of the eluent, breakthrough volume, and effect of coexisting ions were optimized for efficient solid-phase extraction of trace heavy metals in different water and seafood samples. The content of solutions containing the mentioned heavy metals was determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS), and the limits of detection were 0.3, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.9 ng mL(-1) for cadmium, copper, nickel, and lead, respectively. Recoveries and precisions were >98.0 and <4%, respectively. The adsorption capacity of the modified nanoporous silica was 178 mg g(-1) for cadmium, 110 mg g(-1) for copper, 98 mg g(-1) for nickel, and 210 mg g(-1) for lead, respectively. The functionalized MCM-48 nanoporous silica with 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol was characterized by thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), differential thermal analysis (DTA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), elemental analysis (CHN), and N2 adsorption surface area measurement.

Abstract
A new cloud point extraction (CPE) process using the nonionic surfactant Triton X-114 to extract manganese(II) from aqueous solution was investigated. The method is based on the complexation reaction of manganese(II) with 1,2,5,8-tetrahydroxyanthracene-9,10-dione (quinalizarin) in the presence of borate buffer at pH 8.5 and micelle-mediated extraction of the complex. The enriched analyte in the surfactant-rich phase was determined by spectrophotometry at 528nm. The optimal extraction and reaction conditions (e.g. pH, reagent and surfactant concentrations, temperature and centrifugation times) were evaluated and optimized. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the analytical characteristics of the method (e.g., limit of detection (LOD), linear range, preconcentration and improvement factors) were obtained. The proposed CPE method showed linear calibration within the range 5.0-200ngmL(-1) of manganese(II) and the limit of detection of the method was 0.8ngmL(-1) with an preconcentration factor of ∼50 when 25mL of sample solution was preconcentrated to 0.5mL. The relative standard deviation (RSD) and relative error were found to be 1.35% and 1.42%, respectively (CMn(II)=150ngmL(-1), n=6) for pure standard solutions. The interference effect of some cations and anions was also studied. In the presence of foreign ions, no significant interference was observed. The method was applied to the determination of manganese(II) in water and food samples with a recovery for the spiked samples in the range of 95.87-102.5%.

Abstract
A solid phase extraction method for enrichment-separation and the determination of cobalt (Co2+), copper (Cu2+), nickel (Ni2+), zinc (Zn2+) and lead (Pb2+) ions in real samples has been proposed. The influences of some analytical parameters like pH, flow rate, eluent type and interference of matrix ions on recoveries of analytes were optimized. The limits of detection were found in the range of 1.6–3.9 µg L−1, while preconcentration factor for all understudy metal ions were found to be 166 with loading half time ( t1/2) less than 10 min. The procedure was applied for the enrichment-separation of analyte ions in environmental samples with recoveries higher than 94.8% and relative SD <4.9% ( N = 5).

Abstract
A new chelating resin was synthesized by immobilizing 1-(2-thiazolylazo)-2-naphthol through the -N=N- group on Amberlite XAD-1180. The resin was used for the preconcentration of Cd(II), Co(II), Cu(II), Mn(II), Ni(II), and Pb(II) ions and their determination by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The influences of some analytical parameters, such as the pH, volume of the sample, flow rates of the sample and eluent, matrix components, amount of the resin, and amount and type of the eluent on the recovery, were investigated. Those metals retained on the resin at pH 8.5 were eluted with 25 mL of 2 mol L(-1) HNO(3). The sorption capacity of the resin was determined, except for Pb(II). The recoveries were found to be ≥95%, and the relative standard-deviation values were ≤4.3%. The detection limits were in the range of 0.1 - 3.6 µg L(-1). For the accuracy of the method, the analysis of a certified reference material was performed. This method was applied to environmental water samples.

Abstract
Gallic acid was immobilized on Amberlite XAD-16 by coupling it through -N=N group. The resulting chelating resin Amberlite XAD-16 gallic acid, characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), infrared (IR) spectra and BET analysis, was used to preconcentrate Cr(III), Mn(II),Fe(III),Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II)ions. The resin was employed for the preconcentration of the metal ions present in river water and industrial area aqueous samples. Several parameters like effect of pH, effect of time, effect of sample volume and flow rate of sample were investigated. The sorption capacities for the resin were 216 micromol g(-1), 180 micromol g(-1), 403 micromol g(-1), 281 micromol g(-1), 250 micromol g(-1) and 344 micromol g(-1) for Cr(III), Mn(II), Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) respectively. The preconcentration factors for Cr(III), Mn(II), Fe(III), Ni(II), Co(II) and Cu(II) were found out to be 300, 200, 400, 285.7, 300 and 400 respectively. The effect of various interfering ions was also studied. Results were validated by using standard addition method for river water sample.

Abstract
A simple and sensitive preconcentration analysis-atomic absorption spectrometric procedure is described for the determination of lead, cadmium and nickel. The method is based upon on-line preconcentration of metal ions on a minicolumn of Cibacron Blue F3-GA immobilized on poly(hydroxyethylmethacrylate), poly(HEMA). The enrichment factors obtained were 42 for lead, 52 for cadmium and 63 for nickel (sample volume 10 mL and sample flow rate 5 mL/min). The relative standard deviations (n = 10), in 10 mL sample solutions containing 100 microg/L Pb(2+), 10 microg/L Cd(2+) and 100 microg/L Ni(2+) were 8.9, 3.7 and 3.5%, respectively. The limits of detection (blank + 3s) (n = 10), were found to be 12.01 microg/L for Pb(2+), 1.34 microg/L for Cd(2+) and 28.73 microg/L for Ni(2+). The accuracy of the system was checked with certified and tap water samples spiked with known amounts of metal ions. No significant difference was found between the achieved results and the certified values.

Abstract
Thioacetamide immobilized on silica gel was prepared via the Mannich reaction. The extraction and enrichment of copper(II), lead(II), and cadmium(II) ions from aqueous solutions has been investigated. Conditions for effective extraction are optimized with respect to different experimental parameters in both batch and column processes prior to their determination by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The optimum pH ranges for quantitative adsorption are 4.0-8.0, 2.0-7.0, and 5.0-10.0 for Pb(II), Cu(II), and Cd(II), respectively. Pb(II) and Cd(II) can be desorbed with 3 mol/L and 0.1 mol/L HCl/HNO3, and Cu(II) can be desorbed with 2.5% thiourea. The adsorption capacity of the matrix has been found to be 19.76, 16.35, and 12.50 mg/g for Pb(II), Cu(II), and Cd(II), respectively, with the preconcentration factor of approximately equal to 300 for Pb(II) and approximately equal to 200 for Cu(II) and Cd(II). Analytical utility is illustrated in real aqueous samples generated from distilled water, tap water, and river water samples.

Abstract
In this work is proposed a solid phase preconcentration system of Co2+ ions and its posterior determination by GFAAS in which fractional factorial design and response surface methodology (RSM) were used for optimization of the variables associated with preconcentration system performance. The method is based on cobalt extraction as a complex Co2+-PAN (1:2) in a mini-column of polyurethane foam (PUF) impregnated with 1-(2-pyridylazo)-naphthol (PAN) followed by elution with HCl solution and its determination by GFAAS. The chemical and flow variables studied were pH, buffer concentration, eluent concentration and preconcentration and elution flow rates. Results obtained from fractional factorial design 2(5-1) showed that only the variables pH, buffer concentration and interaction (pH X buffer concentration) based on analysis of variance (ANOVA) were statistically significant at 95% confidence level. Under optimised conditions, the method provided an enrichment factor of 11.6 fold with limit of detection and quantification of 38 and 130 ng L-1, respectively, and linear range varying from 0.13 to 10 µg L-1. The precision (n = 9) assessed by relative standard deviation (RSD) was respectively 5.18 and 2.87% for 0.3 and 3.0 µg L-1 cobalt concentrations.
