The modulation of intermanual interactions during the specification of the directions of bimanual movements

The impact of anatomical and spatial distance between responses on response conflict

Different features of objects can be associated with different responses, so that their concurrent presence results in conflict. The Simon effect is a prominent example of this type of response conflict. In two experiments, we ask whether it is modulated by the anatomical or spatial relation between responses. Predictions were derived from an extended variant of the leaky, competing accumulator (LCA) model proposed by Usher and McClelland (Psychological Review, 108, 550-592, 2001). The relation between responses was represented by the lateral-inhibition parameter of the model. For the anatomical distance between responses the expectations were largely confirmed, but not for spatial distance. First, the Simon effect was stronger when responses were performed with two fingers of the same hand than with different hands. Second, the Simon effect was larger only for responses with different hands at short reaction times and disappeared at long ones, whereas for responses with fingers of the same hand, the Simon effect was essentially the same for shorter and longer reaction times. This difference resulted in smaller variability of reaction times in noncorresponding than in corresponding conditions. The dependence of decision processes, as modelled by the LCA model, on the anatomical relation between responses supports the broad hypothesis that the accumulation of evidence on the state of the world is intricately linked with the activation of response codes, that is, the selection of the appropriate actions.

Inter-limb coupling of proximal and distal hand actions

Past studies have revealed connections in directional programming between hands. The present study investigated whether there could also be interaction in programming proximal and distal components of a prehensile hand action. In Experiment 1, the participants performed simultaneously either a push or pull response with the left hand and the grip closure or opening with the right hand. In Experiment 2, the push and pull responses of the left hand were performed together with the precision or power grip responses of the right hand. The participants showed preference, measured in reaction times, to couple the push response with the grip opening and the precision grip, whereas the pull response was associated with the grip closure and the power grip. The study shows for the first time a systematic interaction in proximal and distal prehensile components between two hands. We propose that these effects reflect inter- and intra-limb connections between the representations that prepare the arm extension for the outward reaching, the finger extension for the grip opening, and the motor processes that prepare the precision grip. Conversely, there appear to be connections between the representations that prepare the arm flexion for the inward directed hand movements, the flexion of the thumb and the fingers for the grip closure, and flexion of four fingers for the power grip.

Simultaneous specification of amplitudes and directions of bimanual reversal movements

Intermanual interactions are modulated by task requirements in the course of motor preparation. In particular, amplitude coupling is strong when identical amplitudes are specified concurrently for the 2 hands but relaxed when different amplitudes are specified. Similarly, directional coupling is symmetric when symmetric directions are specified concurrently but turns to parallel when parallel directions are specified. Here, the author investigated whether the modulations of amplitude coupling and directional coupling in the course of motor preparation are independent or interact. Application of the timed-response procedure, which enables one to manipulate the time available for motor preparation, in 9 participants revealed a weakly interactive pattern. Directional coupling tended to be reduced when different rather than same amplitudes were specified concurrently, and amplitude coupling tended to be reduced when parallel rather than symmetric directions were specified concurrently. In general, interactive effects were also apparent in the rates at which directions and amplitudes were specified. Those observations are consistent with the notion that intermanual amplitude and direction interference are mediated by different but partially overlapping neural structures.

The configuration and relaxation of motor task sets

Often the performance of a task does not only require the processing of certain stimuli in certain ways, but also certain patterns of interlimb coordination. We studied shifts between different tasks involving different patterns of intermanual coupling by means of the timed-response procedure, which allows to trace state variables related to task sets. The tasks required the production of rapid bimanual reversal movements with symmetric or parallel directions. Symmetric movements are associated with symmetric coupling, as indicated by positive intermanual correlations between the directions of left-hand and right-hand movements, whereas parallel movements are associated with parallel coupling, as indicated by negative intermanual correlations. Task switches were associated with gradual changes of the intermanual correlations, which indicate the state of intermanual coupling as a major ingredient of a task set, in the course of action preparation. At short preparation intervals intermanual correlations were those appropriate for the preceding trial; with increasing preparation time they were replaced by those appropriate for the current trial, but the influence of the preceding trial did not disappear completely. In-between trials, intermanual coupling drifted toward a symmetric coupling, but not to uncoupled limbs. After a change of the task the specification of movement directions was slowed, but its initiation was not delayed. According to these results, task sets relax toward attractors which can be different from the absence of task sets. They are gradually configured during task preparation with a persistent influence of the preceding task, and the specification of response characteristics does not wait until the configuration of the new task set is completed.

Multiple frames of reference for bimanual co-ordination

Different movement characteristics can be governed by different frames of reference. The present study serves to identify the frames of reference, which govern intermanual interactions with respect to movement directions. Previous studies had shown that intermanual interactions are adjusted to task requirements during motor preparation: for parallel movements directional coupling becomes parallel, and for symmetric movements it becomes symmetric. The timed-response procedure allows to trace these adjustments as they are reflected in the intermanual correlations between left-hand and right-hand directions. In the present study the adjustments remained unchanged when all target directions were rotated laterally, indicating a critical role of hand-centered frames of reference. The additional role of a body-centered frame of reference was indicated by the finding of overall higher intermanual correlations with the rotated target configurations. Intermanual interference at long preparation intervals was absent even when eccentricities in the body-centered frame of reference were different. These findings converge with results on the frames of reference that govern intermanual interactions with respect to movement amplitudes. They suggest a role of both body-centered and hand-centered frames of reference for the adjustments of intermanual interactions to task requirements, but of a hand-centered frame of reference only for the intermanual interference, which remains in spite of the adjustments.
