Abstract
Reaching from standing requires simultaneous adjustments of focal and postural task elements. We investigated the ability of people with stroke to stabilize the endpoint trajectory while maintaining balance during standing reaches. Nineteen stroke and 11 age-equivalent healthy subjects reached toward a target (n = 30 trials) located beyond arm length from standing. Endpoint and center-of-mass (COM) trajectories were analyzed using the uncontrolled manifold (UCM) approach, with segment angles as elemental variables. A synergy index (SI) represented the normalized difference between segment angle combinations, leading to endpoint or COM trajectory stabilization (VUCM) and lack of stabilization (in an orthogonal space; VORT). A higher SI reflects greater stability. In both groups, the endpoint SI (SIEND) decreased in parallel with endpoint velocity and returned close to baseline at the end of the movement. The range of SIEND was significantly greater in stroke (median: 0.87; QR:0.54) compared with healthy subjects (median: 0.58; QR: 0.33; P = 0.009). In both groups, the lowest SIEND occurred at the endpoint peak velocity, whereas the minimal SIEND of the stroke group (median: 0.51; QR:0.41) was lower than the healthy group (median: 0.25; QR: 0.50; P = 0.033). The COM SI (SICOM) remained stable in both groups (~0.8). The maintenance of a high SICOM despite a large reduction of SIEND in stroke subjects suggests that kinematic redundancy was effectively used to stabilize the COM position, but less so for endpoint position stabilization. Both focal and postural task elements should be considered when analyzing whole body reaching deficits in patients with stroke.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Reaching from standing requires simultaneous adjustments of endpoint and center-of-mass (COM) positions. We used uncontrolled manifold analysis to investigate the impact of stroke on the ability to use kinematic redundancy in this task. Our results showed that COM position was stabilized, whereas endpoint trajectory was more variable in stroke than healthy subjects. Enhancing the capacity to meet multiple task goals may be beneficial for motor recovery after stroke.

Abstract
It is tempting to describe human reach-to-grasp movements in terms of two, more or less independent visuomotor channels, one relating hand transport to the object’s location and the other relating grip aperture to the object’s size. Our review of experimental work questions this framework for reasons that go beyond noting the dependence between the two channels. Both the lack of effect of size illusions on grip aperture and the finding that the variability in grip aperture does not depend on the object’s size indicate that size information is not used to control grip aperture. An alternative is to describe grip formation as emerging from controlling the movements of the digits in space. Each digit’s trajectory when grasping an object is remarkably similar to its trajectory when moving to tap the same position on its own. The similarity is also evident in the fast responses when the object is displaced. This review develops a new description of the speed-accuracy trade-off for multiple effectors that is applied to grasping. The most direct support for the digit-in-space framework is that prism-induced adaptation of each digit’s tapping movements transfers to that digit’s movements when grasping, leading to changes in grip aperture for adaptation in opposite directions for the two digits. We conclude that although grip aperture and hand transport are convenient variables to describe grasping, treating grasping as movements of the digits in space is a more suitable basis for understanding the neural control of grasping.

Abstract
Many neurons of the primary motor cortex (M1) are maximally sensitive to "preferred" hand movement directions and generate progressively less activity with movements away from these directions. M1 activity also correlates with other biomechanical variables. These findings are predominantly interpreted in a framework in which the brain preprograms and directly specifies the desired motor outcome. This approach is inconsistent with the empirically derived equilibrium-point hypothesis, in which the brain can control motor actions only indirectly, by changing neurophysiological parameters that may influence, but remain independent of, biomechanical variables. The controversy is resolved on the basis of experimental findings and theoretical analysis of how sensory and central influences are integrated in the presence of the fundamental nonlinearity of neurons: electrical thresholds. In the presence of sensory inputs, electrical thresholds are converted into spatial thresholds that predetermine the position of the body segments at which muscles begin to be activated. Such thresholds may be considered as referent points of respective spatial frames of reference (FRs) in which neurons, including motoneurons, are centrally predetermined to work. By shifting the referent points of respective FRs, the brain elicits intentional actions. Pure involuntary reactions to perturbations are accomplished in motionless FRs. Neurons are primarily sensitive to shifts in referent directions, i.e., shifts in spatial FRs, whereas emergent neural activity may or may not correlate with different biomechanical variables depending on the motor task and external conditions. Indirect, referent control of posture and movement symbolizes a departure from conventional views based on direct preprogramming of the motor outcome.

Abstract
Problems of neurological rehabilitation are considered based on two levels of the International Classification of Functioning (ICF)-Body Structures and Function level and Activity level-and modulating factors related to the individual and the environment. Specifically, at the Body Structures and Function level, problems addressed include spasticity, muscle weakness, disordered muscle activation patterns and disruptions in coordinated movement. At the Activity level, deficits in multi-joint and multi-segment upper limb reaching movements are reviewed. We address how physiologically well established principles in the control of actions, Threshold Control and Referent Control as outlined in the Equilibrium-Point theory can help advance the understanding of underlying deficits that may limit recovery at each level.

Abstract
In reaching to grasp an object, the arm transports the hand to the intended location as the hand shapes to grasp the object. Prior studies that tracked arm endpoint and grip aperture have shown that reaching and grasping, while proceeding in parallel, are interdependent to some degree. Other studies of reaching and grasping that have examined the joint angles of all five digits as the hand shapes to grasp various objects have not tracked the joint angles of the arm as well. We, therefore, examined 22 joint angles from the shoulder to the five digits as monkeys reached, grasped, and manipulated in a task that dissociated location and object. We quantified the extent to which each angle varied depending on location, on object, and on their interaction, all as a function of time. Although joint angles varied depending on both location and object beginning early in the movement, an early phase of location effects in joint angles from the shoulder to the digits was followed by a later phase in which object effects predominated at all joint angles distal to the shoulder. Interaction effects were relatively small throughout the reach-to-grasp. Whereas reach trajectory was influenced substantially by the object, grasp shape was comparatively invariant to location. Our observations suggest that neural control of reach-to-grasp may occur largely in two sequential phases: the first determining the location to which the arm transports the hand, and the second shaping the entire upper extremity to grasp and manipulate the object.

Abstract
The present study investigated how Parkinson's disease (PD) affects temporal coordination among the trunk, arm, and fingers during trunk-assisted reach-to-grasp movements. Seated participants with PD and healthy controls made prehensile movements. During the reach to the object, the involvement of the trunk was altered based on the instruction; the trunk was not involved, moved forward (flexion), or moved backward (extension) in the sagittal plane. Each of the trunk movements was combined with an extension or flexion motion of the arm during the reach. For the transport component, the individuals with PD substantially delayed the onset of trunk motion relative to that of arm motion in conditions where the trunk was moved in the direction opposite from the arm reaching toward the object. At the same time, variability of intervals between the onsets and intervals between the velocity peaks of the trunk and wrist movements was increased. The magnitudes of the variability measures were significantly correlated with the severity of PD. Regarding the grasp component, the individuals with PD delayed the onset of finger movements during reaching. These results imply that PD impairs temporal coordination between the axial and distal body segments during goal-directed skilled actions. When there is a directional discrepancy between the trunk and wrist motions, individuals with PD appear to prioritize wrist motion that is tied to the task goal over the trunk motion. An increase in disease severity magnifies the coordination deficits.

Abstract
A quantitative model of optimal transport-aperture coordination (TAC) during reach-to-grasp movements has been developed in our previous studies. The utilization of that model for data analysis allowed, for the first time, to examine the phase dependence of the precision demand specified by the CNS for neurocomputational information processing during an ongoing movement. It was shown that the CNS utilizes a two-phase strategy for movement control. That strategy consists of reducing the precision demand for neural computations during the initial phase, which decreases the cost of information processing at the expense of lower extent of control optimality. To successfully grasp the target object, the CNS increases precision demand during the final phase, resulting in higher extent of control optimality. In the present study, we generalized the model of optimal TAC to a model of optimal coordination between X and Y components of point-to-point planar movements (XYC). We investigated whether the CNS uses the two-phase control strategy for controlling those movements, and how the strategy parameters depend on the prescribed movement speed, movement amplitude and the size of the target area. The results indeed revealed a substantial similarity between the CNS's regulation of TAC and XYC. First, the variability of XYC within individual trials was minimal, meaning that execution noise during the movement was insignificant. Second, the inter-trial variability of XYC was considerable during the majority of the movement time, meaning that the precision demand for information processing was lowered, which is characteristic for the initial phase. That variability significantly decreased, indicating higher extent of control optimality, during the shorter final movement phase. The final phase was the longest (shortest) under the most (least) challenging combination of speed and accuracy requirements, fully consistent with the concept of the two-phase control strategy. This paper further discussed the relationship between motor variability and XYC variability.

Abstract
The present study investigated how the involvement and direction of trunk movement during reach-to-grasp movements affect the coordination between the transport and grasping components. Seated young adults made prehensile movements in which the involvement of the trunk was varied; the trunk was not involved, moved forward (flexion), or moved backward (extension) in the sagittal plane during the reach to the object. Each of the trunk movements was combined with an extension or flexion motion of the arm during the reach. Regarding the relationship between the trunk and arm motion for arm transport, the onset of wrist motion relative to that of the trunk was delayed to a greater extent for the trunk extension than for the trunk flexion. The variability of the time period from the peak of wrist velocity to the peak of trunk velocity was also significantly greater for trunk extension compared to trunk flexion. These findings indicate that trunk flexion was better integrated into the control of wrist transport than trunk extension. In terms of the temporal relationship between wrist transport and grip aperture, the relationship between the time of peak wrist velocity and the time of peak grip aperture did not change or become less steady across conditions. Therefore, the stability of temporal coordination between wrist transport and grip aperture was maintained despite the variation of the pattern of intersegmental coordination between the arm and the trunk during arm transport. The transport-aperture coordination was further assessed in terms of the control law according to which the initiation of aperture closure during the reach occurs when the hand crosses a hand-to-target distance threshold for grasp initiation, which is a function of peak aperture, wrist velocity and acceleration, trunk velocity and acceleration, and trunk-to-target distance at the time of aperture closure initiation. The participants increased the hand-to-target distance threshold for grasp initiation in the conditions where the trunk was involved compared to the conditions where the trunk was not involved. An increase also occurred when the trunk was extended compared to when it was flexed. The increased distance threshold implies an increase in the hand-to-target distance-related safety margin for grasping when the trunk is involved, especially when it is extended. These results suggest that the CNS significantly utilizes the parameters of trunk movement together with movement parameters related to the arm and the hand for controlling grasp initiation.
