Equilibrium constraints do not affect the timing of muscular synergies during the initiation of a whole body reaching movement

Intermuscular coherence reveals that affective emotional pictures modulate neural control mechanisms during the initiation of arm pointing movements

Introduction

Several studies in psychology provided compelling evidence that emotions significantly impact motor control. Yet, these evidences mostly rely on behavioral investigations, whereas the underlying neurophysiological processes remain poorly understood.

Methods

Using a classical paradigm in motor control, we tested the impact of affective pictures associated with positive, negative or neutral valence on the kinematics and patterns of muscle activations of arm pointing movements performed from a standing position. The hand reaction and movement times were measured and electromyography (EMG) was used to measure the activities from 10 arm, leg and trunk muscles that are involved in the postural maintenance and arm displacement in pointing movements. Intermuscular coherence (IMC) between pairs of muscles was computed to measure changes in patterns of muscle activations related to the emotional stimuli.

Results

The hand movement time increased when an emotional picture perceived as unpleasant was presented as compared to when the emotional picture was perceived as pleasant. When an unpleasant emotional picture was presented, beta (β, 15-35 Hz) and gamma (γ, 35-60 Hz) IMC decreased in the recorded pairs of postural muscles during the initiation of pointing movements. Moreover, a linear relationship between the magnitude of the intermuscular coherence in the pairs of posturo-focal muscles and the hand movement time was found in the unpleasant scenarios.

Discussion

These findings reveal that emotional stimuli can significantly affect the content of the motor command sent by the central nervous system to muscles when performing voluntary goal-directed movements.

Constancy of Preparatory Postural Adjustments for Reaching to Virtual Targets across Different Postural Configurations

Postural and movement components must be coordinated without significant disturbance to balance when reaching from a standing position. Traditional theories propose that muscle activity prior to movement onset create the mechanics to counteract the internal torques generated by the future limb movement, reducing possible instability via centre of mass (CoM) displacement. However, during goal-directed reach movements executed on a fixed base of support (BoS), preparatory postural adjustments (or pPAs) promote movement of the CoM within the BoS. Considering this dichotomy, the current study investigated if pPAs constitute part of a whole-body strategy that is tied to the efficient execution of movement, rather than the constraints of balance. We reasoned that if pPAs were tied primarily to balance control, they would modulate as a function of perceived instability. Alternatively, if tied to dynamics necessary for movement initiation, they would remain unchanged, with feedback-based changes being sufficient to retain balance following volitional arm movement. Participants executed beyond-arm reaching movements in four different postural configurations that altered the quality of the BoS. Quantification of these changes to stability did not drastically alter the tuning or timing of preparatory muscle activity despite modifications to arm and CoM trajectories necessary to complete the reaching movement. In contrast to traditional views, preparatory postural muscle activity is not always tuned for balance maintenance or even as a calculation of upcoming instability but may reflect a requirement of voluntary movement towards a pre-defined location.

Age-related differences in processes organizing goal-directed locomotion toward emotional pictures

Previous studies yielded evidence for an interaction between age and valence in numerous cognitive processes. But, to date, no research has been conducted in the field of motor skills. In this study, we examined the age-related differences in the organization of an emotionally goal-directed locomotion task. Faced with a pleasant, unpleasant, or neutral picture displayed to the side of a stop button, younger and older adults were instructed to walk toward the button (intermediate goal) and push it to turn-off the picture (final goal). Kinematic and ground reaction forces were recorded. The main findings indicated that older adults' response times (RTs) did not differ across the valence picture. The fastest RTs were found in younger adults when faced with pleasant pictures, suggesting that older people may focus either on intermediate or final goals, depending on their value of pleasantness, and prioritize positive goals. We also found that the spatial coding of locomotion (trajectory and final body position) was affected in the same way by the valence of the intermediate goal in both age groups. Taken together, these findings provide new perspectives regarding the potential role of the emotional valence of the intermediate and final goals on the cognitive processes involved in action coding, such as in mental representations of action in older adults.

Trunk muscles contribute as functional groups to directionality of reaching during stance

Muscle activity preceding the onset of voluntary movement has been shown to reduce centre of mass (CoM) displacement and stabilise the body during self-induced 'perturbations'. However, based on recent findings in the lower limb, where preparatory muscle activity creates the dynamics necessary for the initiation of movement, this study sought to investigate whether trunk musculature acted consistently to minimise the displacement of the CoM, or in contrast, contribute to the movement. While standing, nine healthy participants made single-step (point-to-point) reaching movements to 13 visual targets throughout a 180° range (target interval = 15°). Full-body kinematics and electromyographic activity from 'focal' arm and 'postural' trunk muscles were analysed for a preparatory phase of 250-ms preceding movement onset (termed pPA). Akin to lower limb findings, direction-specific patterns of anticipatory trunk muscle activity accompanied the onset of rotational kinematics and CoM acceleration in the direction of the desired target. When arranged in terms of peak activation, we found functionally relevant groupings aligned to either ipsi-, central or contra-lateral reaching directions. Contrary to traditional approaches, which focus on CoM stabilisation, this spatial recruitment was in favour of assisting initiation of movement. Such activity suggests that the central nervous system may rely on synergic patterns of muscle activation within an undistinguishable and shared focal/postural motor command for functional voluntary movements.

Revisiting the body-schema concept in the context of whole-body postural-focal dynamics

The body-schema concept is revisited in the context of embodied cognition, further developing the theory formulated by Marc Jeannerod that the motor system is part of a simulation network related to action, whose function is not only to shape the motor system for preparing an action (either overt or covert) but also to provide the self with information on the feasibility and the meaning of potential actions. The proposed computational formulation is based on a dynamical system approach, which is linked to an extension of the equilibrium-point hypothesis, called Passive Motor Paradigm: this dynamical system generates goal-oriented, spatio-temporal, sensorimotor patterns, integrating a direct and inverse internal model in a multi-referential framework. The purpose of such computational model is to operate at the same time as a general synergy formation machinery for planning whole-body actions in humanoid robots and/or for predicting coordinated sensory-motor patterns in human movements. In order to illustrate the computational approach, the integration of simultaneous, even partially conflicting tasks will be analyzed in some detail with regard to postural-focal dynamics, which can be defined as the fusion of a focal task, namely reaching a target with the whole-body, and a postural task, namely maintaining overall stability.

Relationship between improvements in motor performance and changes in anticipatory postural adjustments during whole-body reaching training

Anticipatory postural adjustments (APAs) provide postural stability and play an important role in ensuring appropriate motor performance. APAs also change in various situations. However, it is unknown whether changes in APAs during repetitive movement training contribute to improvement in motor performance. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between improvement in motor performance and changes in APAs during repeated reaching training, as well as the learning effects on APA changes. Sixteen healthy subjects (23 ± 2 years of age) stood barefoot on a force platform and reached as quickly and accurately as possible to a target placed at their maximum reach distance immediately following a beep signal in a reaction time condition. Whole-body reaching training with the right arm was repeated 100 times for three consecutive days. Motor performance and APAs were evaluated on the first day, after discontinuation of training for one day, and again at three months. In addition, reaching with the left arm (untrained limb) was tested on the first and the fifth training day. Body position segments were measured using three-dimensional motion analysis. Surface electromyography of eight postural muscles in both lower limbs was recorded. Kinetics data were recorded using the force platform. Whole-body reaching training induced not only improvements in motor performance (e.g., increased peak hand velocity), but also changes in APAs (e.g., earlier APA onset and increased amplitude). These changes were strongly correlated with and occurred earlier than improvements in motor performance. The learning effects on APAs were retained after the discontinuation of training and were generalized to the untrained limb. These results suggest that change in APAs contributes to improvement in motor performance; that is, the central nervous system may be able to adapt APAs for improvement in motor performance.

Age-related differences in maintenance of balance during forward reach to the floor

BACKGROUND

Downward reaching may lead to falls in older adults, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. This study assessed differences between younger and older adults in postural control and losses of balance when performing a forward reach to the floor in 2 possible real-world situations, with and without full foot contact with the floor.

METHODS

Healthy younger (n = 13) and older (n = 12) women reached as fast as possible to a target placed at their maximal forward reaching distance on floor, either standing on their whole foot or on the shortest base of support (BOS) that they were willing to perform a toe touch with.

RESULTS

Compared with younger women, older women used a 50% larger BOS when stooping down to touch their toes and had 22% less maximal forward reaching distance on the floor. Older women were twice as likely to lose their balance as younger women while performing a rapid forward floor reach (χ(2)(2) = 3.9; p < .05; relative risk = 1.91; 95% CI = 0.99-3.72). Postural sway, measured as center of pressure excursions and center of pressure root mean square error, did not differ between younger and older women anteriorly, but posteriorly, older women decreased their sway in full foot BOS and increased their sway in forefoot BOS (Age × BOS, p < .05). Leg strength was reduced in older versus younger women and was correlated with maximal reach distance (r = .65-.71).

CONCLUSIONS

Healthy older women performing a rapid maximum forward reach on the floor, particularly when using their forefoot for support, are at an increased risk for losing their balance.

An ensemble analysis of electromyographic activity during whole body pointing with the use of support vector machines

We explored the use of support vector machines (SVM) in order to analyze the ensemble activities of 24 postural and focal muscles recorded during a whole body pointing task. Because of the large number of variables involved in motor control studies, such multivariate methods have much to offer over the standard univariate techniques that are currently employed in the field to detect modifications. The SVM was used to uncover the principle differences underlying several variations of the task. Five variants of the task were used. An unconstrained reaching, two constrained at the focal level and two at the postural level. Using the electromyographic (EMG) data, the SVM proved capable of distinguishing all the unconstrained from the constrained conditions with a success of approximately 80% or above. In all cases, including those with focal constraints, the collective postural muscle EMGs were as good as or better than those from focal muscles for discriminating between conditions. This was unexpected especially in the case with focal constraints. In trying to rank the importance of particular features of the postural EMGs we found the maximum amplitude rather than the moment at which it occurred to be more discriminative. A classification using the muscles one at a time permitted us to identify some of the postural muscles that are significantly altered between conditions. In this case, the use of a multivariate method also permitted the use of the entire muscle EMG waveform rather than the difficult process of defining and extracting any particular variable. The best accuracy was obtained from muscles of the leg rather than from the trunk. By identifying the features that are important in discrimination, the use of the SVM permitted us to identify some of the features that are adapted when constraints are placed on a complex motor task.

Muscular synergies during motor corrections: investigation of the latencies of muscle activities

To reduce the complexity of muscular control, a small number of muscular activations are combined to produce an infinity of movements. This concept of muscle synergies has been widely investigated, mainly by means of principal component analyses (PCA) in the case of unperturbed movements. However, reaching movements can be altered at any time if the target location is changed during their execution. In this case, PCA does not precisely measure the latencies of muscles activities. We develop here a simple method to investigate how a random target jump toward a single location induced motor corrections in the whole musculature by precisely determining the latencies of muscle activities during a complex pointing movement. Our main result demonstrated that both initiation times together as well as correction times together were strongly correlated for some pairs of muscles, independently of their occurrences during the motor sequence and independently of the location of the muscles at the anatomical level. This study thus provides a simple method to investigate the latencies of muscular activities and the way they are correlated between certain muscles to stress the muscular synergies involved in the movement. It also suggests that the CNS re-programs a new synergy after the target jumps in order to correct the on-going reaching movement. This latter corrective synergy involves the control of more muscles together compared to that used to initiate the movement. At the level of the Primary Motor Cortice (M1), muscles appear to be controlled as a coupled functional system, rather than individually and separately.
