Neural correlates of after-effects caused by adaptation to multiple face displays

Face adaptation induces duration distortion of subsequent face stimuli in a face category-specific manner

Studies have shown that duration perception depends on several visual processes. However, the stages of visual processes that contribute to duration perception remain unclear. This study examined the effects of categorical differences in face adaptation on perceived duration. In all the experiments, we compared the perceived durations of human, monkey, and cat faces (comparison stimuli) after adapting to a human face. Results revealed that the human comparison stimuli were perceived shorter than the monkey and cat comparison stimuli (categorical face adaptation on duration perception [CFAD]). The difference between the face categories disappeared when the adapting stimulus was rendered unrecognizable by phase scrambling, indicating that adaptation to low-level visual properties cannot fully account for the CFAD effect. Furthermore, CFAD was preserved but attenuated when the adapting stimulus was inverted or a 1,000-ms interval was inserted before the comparison stimuli, which implied that CFAD occurred as long as the adapting stimulus was perceived as a face and not simply based on conceptual category processes. These findings indicate that face adaptation affects perceived duration in a category-specific manner (the CFAD effect) and highlights the involvement of visual categorical processes in duration perception.

Understanding Mood of the Crowd with Facial Expressions: Majority Judgment for Evaluation of Statistical Summary Perception

We intuitively perceive mood or collective information of facial expressions without much effort. Although it is known that statistical summarization occurs even for faces instantaneously, it might be hard to perceive precise summary statistics of facial expressions (i.e., using all of them equally) since recognition of them requires the binding of multiple features of a face. This study assessed which information is extracted from the crowd to understand mood. In a series of experiments, twelve individual faces with happy and neutral expressions (or angry and neutral expressions) were presented simultaneously, and participants reported which expression appeared more frequently. To perform this task correctly, participants must perceive precise distribution of facial expressions in the crowd. If participants could perceive ensembles based on every face instantaneously, expressions presented on more than half of the faces (in a single ensemble/trial) would have been identified as more frequently presented and the just noticeable difference would be small. The results showed that participants did not always report seeing emotional faces more frequently until much more emotional than neutral faces appeared, suggesting that facial expression ensembles were not perceived from all faces. Manipulating the presentation layout revealed that participants' judgments highly weight only a part of the faces in the center of the crowd regardless of their visual size. Moreover, individual differences in the precision of summary statistical perception were related to visual working memory. Based on these results, this study provides a speculative explanation of summary perception of real distinctive faces. (247 words).

The aftereffect of the ensemble average of facial expressions on subsequent facial expression recognition

An ensemble or statistical summary can be extracted from facial expressions presented in different spatial locations simultaneously. However, how such complicated objects are represented in the mind is not clear. It is known that the aftereffect of facial expressions, in which prolonged viewing of facial expressions biases the perception of subsequent facial expressions of the same category, occurs only when a visual representation is formed. Using this methodology, we examined whether an ensemble can be represented with visualized information. Experiment 1 revealed that the presentation of multiple facial expressions biased the perception of subsequent facial expressions to less happy as much as the presentation of a single face did. Experiment 2 compared the presentation of faces comprising strong and weak intensities of emotional expressions with an individual face as the adaptation stimulus. The results indicated that the perceptual biases were found after the presentation of four faces and a strong single face, but not after the weak single face presentation. Experiment 3 employed angry expressions, a distinct category from the test expression used as an adaptation stimulus; no aftereffect was observed. Finally, Experiment 4 clearly demonstrated the perceptual bias with a higher number of faces. Altogether, these results indicate that an ensemble average extracted from multiple faces leads to the perceptual bias, and this effect is similar in terms of its properties to that of a single face. This supports the idea that an ensemble of faces is represented with visualized information as a single face.

Friend effects framework: Contrastive and hierarchical processing in cheerleader effects

Cheerleader effects, group attractiveness effects, and divisive normalization are all characterized by faces appearing more attractive when seen within a group. However, it is possible that your friends could have a detrimental effect upon your attractiveness too: if these group effects arose partly as a contrastive process between your face and your friends, then highly attractive friends may diminish your attractiveness. We confirm this hypothesis across two experiments by showing that the presence of highly attractive friends can indeed make you appear less attractive (i.e., a reverse cheerleader effect), suggesting friend effects are driven in part by a contrastive process against the group. However, these effects are also influenced by your own attractiveness in a fashion that appears consistent with hierarchical encoding, where less attractive targets benefit more from being viewed in an increasingly unattractive group than attractive targets. Our final experiment demonstrates that the company of others not only alters our attractiveness, but also induces shifts in how average or distinctive a target face appears too, with these averageness effects associated with the friend effects observed in our first experiment. We present a Friend Effects Framework within which 'friend effects' is an umbrella term for the positive (e.g., cheerleader effects, group attractiveness effects) and negative (i.e., the reverse cheerleader effect) ways in which hierarchical encoding, group contrastive effects, and other influences of friends can have on your attractiveness.

Altering second-order configurations reduces the adaptation effects on early face-sensitive event-related potential components

The spatial distances among the features of a face are commonly referred to as second-order relations, and the coding of these properties is often regarded as a cornerstone in face recognition. Previous studies have provided mixed results regarding whether the N170, a face-sensitive component of the event-related potential, is sensitive to second-order relations. Here we investigated this issue in a gender discrimination paradigm following long-term (5 s) adaptation to normal or vertically stretched male and female faces, considering that the latter manipulation substantially alters the position of the inner facial features. Gender-ambiguous faces were more likely judged to be female following adaptation to a male face and vice versa. This aftereffect was smaller but statistically significant after being adapted to vertically stretched when compared to unstretched adapters. Event-related potential recordings revealed that adaptation effects measured on the amplitude of the N170 show strong modulations by the second-order relations of the adapter: reduced N170 amplitude was observed, however, this reduction was smaller in magnitude after being adapted to stretched when compared to unstretched faces. These findings suggest early face-processing, as reflected in the N170 component, proceeds by extracting the spatial relations of inner facial features.
