Radionuclides and Radiation Exposure in Tantalite Mining, Ethiopia

Hydrometallurgical assessment of oxides of Nb, Ta, Th and U from Ethiopian tantalite ore

Tantalite ore is the main source of the metals niobium (Nb) and tantalum (Ta). Today, the needs for these economic and irreplaceable Nb, and Ta metals are becoming imperative for the technological world, to meet the demand, a lot of research is needed to ore reserves, extraction methodology and simplified refining processes should be in plethora. This study focuses on the Ethiopian tantalite ore located south of the Neoproterozoic Adola belt of the rare element Kenticha pegmatite deposit (global source of tantalite). Successive beneficiation of pegmatite ore results in a highest dissolution of 60.83 wt% of Ta2O5 with 4.58 wt% of Nb2O5 including the removal of U, Th, Ti, Fe and Si, resulting in a percentage low weight, which allows transporting ore concentrates. The concentrated ore is leached with a mixture of binary acids HF and H2SO4 with 6:1 ratio at temperatures from 100 to 400 °C. The filtered solution was extracted with MIBK then, precipitated with ammonium solution. The hydrometallurgy of Nb and Ta oxides is affected by leaching temperature and the presence of radioactive oxides of U and Th. Elemental analysis and surface topography were studied using SEM/EDS, revealing the highest percentage composition of Nb and Ta oxides at 200 °C of leaching temperature. Comparatively, the compositions of U and Th showed higher amounts at the leaching temperatures of 150 and 200 °C, and when the temperature reached about 350 and 400 °C, the percentage composition of U and Th became very low, the economic metals Nb and Ta were completely leached. The stability of the precipitated samples was analyzed using TGA-DTA and found to be thermally stable, and not contain significant moisture at each temperature studied. Studies for recovery of Ta, Nb, U and Th from Kenticha tantalite are required.

Measurements of natural radionuclide levels and hazards in the Lega Dembi gold mine, Oromia, Ethiopia

This study aimed to evaluate natural radioactivity levels and hazards of radionuclides 232Th, 226Ra and 40K in soil samples taken from 15 locations in the Lega Dembi gold mining, Oromia, Ethiopia, using gamma-ray spectroscopy coupled with an HPGe detector. It was observed that the respective mean specific activities for 226Ra, 232Th and 40K determined in the mining site were 23.87 ± 0.7, 52.5 ± 1.8 and 391.62 ± 11.35 Bq/kg, and 8.89 ± 0.4, 13.83 ± 0.6 and 423.68 ± 9.5 Bq/kg in the living areas. The specific activity of 232Th was above the permissive limit in the mining site, while for 226Ra and 40K were within the limit. The specific activity of 40K in the living area was observed to be above the permissive limit. The calculated value of radiation hazards parameters; radium equivalent activity (Raeq), internal and external hazards indices (Hin) and (Hex), the mean annual effective dose (AED), and gamma representative indices (Iγ) were within permissively limit. The mean absorbed dose rate in the mining site was above the recommended safety limit. The total annual gonadal dose equivalent value was found to be 494.8 ± 8.7 µSv/a in the mining site. This value was also above the permissively.

Impact of Environmental Radiation on the Incidence of Cancer and Birth Defects in Regions with High Natural Radioactivity

Four regions of high natural radioactivity were selected to assess radionuclide levels in rocks and soils, ambient radiation doses, radon exhalation from the ground, and radon concentrations in the air. The regions have different geochemical characteristics and radioactivity levels, which modulate the radiation exposure of local populations. Combining radiometric data with data from regional health statistics on non-infectious diseases, a statistically significant positive correlation was found between radiation exposure and the incidence of cancer and birth defects. Although this is a preliminary and prospective study, the empirical evidence gathered in this paper indicated increased the incidence of some diseases in relationship with the natural radiation background. It is suggested that further research, including epidemiological studies and direct determination of radiation exposures in regions with a high natural radiation background, is needed and justified.
