Dynamic surface tension and adsorption mechanism of surfactin biosurfactant at the air–water interface

Interaction, Surface Activity, and Application of Mixed Systems of Alcohol Ether Sulfate Anionic Surfactants with Multiple Ethylene Oxide Groups and Gemini Quaternary Ammonium Surfactant

The surface activities and application properties for the mixtures of cationic surfactants tetramethylene-1,4-bis[N,N-bis(hydroxypropyl)-hexa/decyloxypropylammonium] bromide (GC10-P) and tetramethylene-1,4-bis[N,N-bis(hydroxyethyl)-hexa/decyloxypropylammonium] bromide (GC10-E) and anionic surfactant isomeric sodium fatty alcohol ether sulfates (iso-AE9S) were investigated using both the tensiometry and the conductometry. The interaction parameters and thermodynamic micellization parameters of GC10-P/iso-AE9S and GC10-E/iso-AE9S mixtures were evaluated by Clint-Rubingh and Motomura theoretical models. When the mole fraction of α1 for GC10-P/iso-AE9S mixed system was 0.2, the critical micelle concentration (CMC) reached a minimum of 1.61 × 10-4 mol/L, and the minimum critical micelle concentration of the GC10-E/iso-AE9S mixed system is 2.67 × 10-5 mol/L at α1 = 0.6. The CMC value of the mixed system is 1-2 orders of magnitude lower than that of any single component. The results indicate that the synergistic effects of the investigated mixed systems (evaluated by βm) are in order of GC10-P/iso-AE9S < GC10-E/iso-AE9S, with maximum βm values of -17.98 and -9.78, respectively. The change in zeta potential indicates that the poly(ethylene oxide) chain has weakened the charge density of the hydrophilic headgroup of the anionic surfactant. The interfacial tension at the oil-water interface in the mixed system of anionic/cationic surfactants is lower than that of any single component, exhibiting a higher interfacial activity. The mixed system exhibits a decreased contact angle and superior wetting ability over any single component, and it also enhances foam performance, emulsification performance, and degreasing performance.

Size-dependent Effect on Foliar Utilization and Biocontrol Efficacy of Emamectin Benzoate Delivery Systems

The development of nanopesticides provides new avenues for pesticide reduction and efficiency improvement. However, the size effect of nanopesticides remains unclear, and its underlying mechanisms of influence have become a major obstacle in the design and application of pesticide nanoformulations. In this research, the noncarrier-coated emamectin benzoate (EB) solid dispersions (Micro-EB and Nano-EB) were produced under a constant surfactant-to-active ingredient ratio by a self-emulsifying-carrier solidification technique. The particle size of Micro-EB was 162 times that of spherical Nano-EB. The small size and large specific surface area of Nano-EB facilitated the adsorption of surfactants on the surface of the particles, thereby improving its dispersibility, suspensibility, and stability. The pinning effect of nanoparticles significantly suppressed droplet retraction and rebounding. Moreover, Nano-EB exhibited a 25% higher retention of the active ingredient on cabbage leaves and a 70% higher washing resistance than Micro-EB, and both were significantly different. The improvement of abilities in wetting, spreading, and retention of Nano-EB on crop leaves contributed to the increase in foliar utilization, which further resulted in a 1.6-fold enhancement of bioactivity against target Spodoptera exigua compared to Micro-EB. Especially, Nano-EB did not exacerbate the safety risk to the nontarget organism zebrafish with no significant difference. This study elaborates the size effect on the effectiveness and safety of pesticide formulations and lays a theoretical foundation for the development and rational utilization of efficient and environmentally friendly nanopesticides.

An Up-to-Date Review on the Remediation of Dyes and Phenolic Compounds from Wastewaters Using Enzymes Immobilized on Emerging and Nanostructured Materials: Promises and Challenges

Addressing the critical issue of water pollution, this review article emphasizes the need to remove hazardous dyes and phenolic compounds from wastewater. These pollutants pose severe risks due to their toxic, mutagenic, and carcinogenic properties. The study explores various techniques for the remediation of organic contaminants from wastewater, including an enzymatic approach. A significant challenge in enzymatic wastewater treatment is the loss of enzyme activity and difficulty in recovery post-treatment. To mitigate these issues, this review examines the strategy of immobilizing enzymes on newly developed nanostructured materials like graphene, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). These materials offer high surface areas, excellent porosity, and ample anchoring sites for effective enzyme immobilization. The review evaluates recent research on enzyme immobilization on these supports and their applications in biocatalytic nanoparticles. It also analyzes the impact of operational factors (e.g., time, pH, and temperature) on dye and phenolic compound removal from wastewater using these enzymes. Despite promising outcomes, this review acknowledges the challenges for large-scale implementation and offers recommendations for future research to tackle these obstacles. This review concludes by suggesting that enzyme immobilization on these emerging materials could present a sustainable, environmentally friendly solution to the escalating water pollution crisis.

Characteristics and pH-Responsiveness of SDBS–Stabilized Crude Oil/Water Nanoemulsions

Nanoemulsions are colloidal systems with a wide spectrum of applications in several industrial fields. In this study, crude oil-in-water (O/W) nanoemulsions were formulated using different dosages of the anionic sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) surfactant. The formulated nanoemulsions were characterized in terms of emulsion droplet size, zeta potential, and interfacial tension (IFT). Additionally, the rheological behavior, long-term stability, and on-demand breakdown of the nanoemulsions via a pH-responsive mechanism were evaluated. The obtained results revealed the formation of as low as 63.5 nm average droplet size with a narrow distribution (33–142 nm). Additionally, highly negative zeta potential (i.e., −62.2 mV) and reasonably low IFT (0.45 mN/m) were obtained at 4% SDBS. The flow-ability of the nanoemulsions was also investigated and the obtained results revealed an increase in the nanoemulsion viscosity with increasing the emulsifier content. Nonetheless, even at the highest SDBS dosage of 4%, the nanoemulsion viscosity at ambient conditions never exceeded 2.5 mPa·s. A significant reduction in viscosity was obtained with increasing the nanoemulsion temperature. The formulated nanoemulsions displayed extreme stability with no demulsification signs irrespective of the emulsifier dosage even after one-month shelf-life. Another interesting and, yet, surprising observation reported herein is the pH-induced demulsification despite SDBS not possessing a pH-responsive character. This behavior enabled the on-demand breakdown of the nanoemulsions by simply altering their pH via the addition of HCl or NaOH; a complete and quick oil separation can be achieved using this simple and cheap demulsification method. The obtained results reveal the potential utilization of the formulated nanoemulsions in oilfield-related applications such as enhanced oil recovery (EOR), well stimulation and remediation, well-bore cleaning, and formation fracturing.

Tapping the Role of Microbial Biosurfactants in Pesticide Remediation: An Eco-Friendly Approach for Environmental Sustainability

Pesticides are used indiscriminately all over the world to protect crops from pests and pathogens. If they are used in excess, they contaminate the soil and water bodies and negatively affect human health and the environment. However, bioremediation is the most viable option to deal with these pollutants, but it has certain limitations. Therefore, harnessing the role of microbial biosurfactants in pesticide remediation is a promising approach. Biosurfactants are the amphiphilic compounds that can help to increase the bioavailability of pesticides, and speeds up the bioremediation process. Biosurfactants lower the surface area and interfacial tension of immiscible fluids and boost the solubility and sorption of hydrophobic pesticide contaminants. They have the property of biodegradability, low toxicity, high selectivity, and broad action spectrum under extreme pH, temperature, and salinity conditions, as well as a low critical micelle concentration (CMC). All these factors can augment the process of pesticide remediation. Application of metagenomic and in-silico tools would help by rapidly characterizing pesticide degrading microorganisms at a taxonomic and functional level. A comprehensive review of the literature shows that the role of biosurfactants in the biological remediation of pesticides has received limited attention. Therefore, this article is intended to provide a detailed overview of the role of various biosurfactants in improving pesticide remediation as well as different methods used for the detection of microbial biosurfactants. Additionally, this article covers the role of advanced metagenomics tools in characterizing the biosurfactant producing pesticide degrading microbes from different environments.

Effect of heterogeneous and homogeneous polymerisation on the structure of pNIPAm nanogels

The choice of the polymerisation temperature and initiator in the synthesis of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-based nanogels can significantly influence their structure, morphology and thermoresponsive properties.

Effect of ethylene glycol and its derivatives on the aggregation properties of reactive Orange 13 dye aqueous solution

The aggregation behavior of dyes especially in the dyeing and printing of different textile materials is an important phenomenon which affects the process of dye adsorption and diffusion. In order to avoid the aggregation of dyes, scientists are looking for materials which can inhibit the aggregation process by fabricating the dye solution. Organic solvents have found important influence in the aggregation of dye molecules. Therefore, herein, we report the fabrication of reactive orange 13 dye solutions with the aid of ethylene glycol and its derivative organic solvents to investigate the aggregation behavior of dye molecules by UV-vis absorption spectrum, fluorescence spectrum, surface tension, rheological and particle size measurements. IR spectra were performed to understand the effect of hydrogen bonding on the aggregation behavior of dye molecules. Moreover, transmission electron microscopy was also tested to confirm the effect of organic solvents on the surface morphology of dye molecules. The results show that the reactive Orange 13 dye molecules show aggregation in terms of dimeric and multimeric structures at high dye concentrations due to π–π interaction of naphthalene rings. Moreover, on introducing the ethylene glycol and its derivatives, the dye molecules disaggregate by hydrophobic interactions of dye molecules and organic solvents which destroyed the ice-like structure between the dye molecules and the water molecules. Among the three organic solvents, DME solvent caused more disaggregation of reactive Orange 13 dye molecules due to extra hydrophobic methyl groups in its structure. The results also show that the interaction between Orange 13 dyes and ethylene glycol and its derivatives could decrease the surface tension and particle size of the dye, and increase the quantum yield and viscosity. This research will help to understand the aggregation behavior of dyes and help the textile industries to choose the suitable formulations of dye solutions for coloration of different textile substrates via dyeing and printing methods.

Role of Lipid Composition, Physicochemical Interactions, and Membrane Mechanics in the Molecular Actions of Microbial Cyclic Lipopeptides

Several experimental and theoretical studies have extensively investigated the effects of a large diversity of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) on model lipid bilayers and living cells. Many of these peptides disturb cells by forming pores in the plasma membrane that eventually lead to the cell death. The complexity of these peptide-lipid interactions is mainly related to electrostatic, hydrophobic and topological issues of these counterparts. Diverse studies have shed some light on how AMPs act on lipid bilayers composed by different phospholipids, and how mechanical properties of membranes could affect the antimicrobial effects of such compounds. On the other hand, cyclic lipopeptides (cLPs), an important class of microbial secondary metabolites, have received comparatively less attention. Due to their amphipathic structures, cLPs exhibit interesting biological activities including interactions with biofilms, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, antiviral, and anti-tumoral properties, which deserve more investigation. Understanding how physicochemical properties of lipid bilayers contribute and determining the antagonistic activity of these secondary metabolites over a broad spectrum of microbial pathogens could establish a framework to design and select effective strategies of biological control. This implies unravelling-at the biophysical level-the complex interactions established between cLPs and lipid bilayers. This review presents, in a systematic manner, the diversity of lipidated antibiotics produced by different microorganisms, with a critical analysis of the perturbing actions that have been reported in the literature for this specific set of membrane-active lipopeptides during their interactions with model membranes and in vivo. With an overview on the mechanical properties of lipid bilayers that can be experimentally determined, we also discuss which parameters are relevant in the understanding of those perturbation effects. Finally, we expose in brief, how this knowledge can help to design novel strategies to use these biosurfactants in the agronomic and pharmaceutical industries.
