Abstract
Sugarcane ethanol production generates about 360 billion liters of vinasse, a liquid effluent with an average chemical oxygen demand of 46,000 mg/L. Vinasse still contains about 11% of the original energy from sugarcane juice, but this chemical energy is diluted. This residue, usually discarded or applied in fertigation, is a suitable substrate for anaerobic digestion (AD). Although the technology is not yet widespread—only 3% of bioethanol plants used it in Brazil in the past, most discontinuing the process—the research continues. With a biomethane potential ranging from 215 to 324 L of methane produced by kilogram of organic matter in vinasse, AD could improve the energy output of sugarcane biorefineries. At the same time, the residual digestate could still be used as an agricultural amendment or for microalgal production for further stream valorization. This review presents the current technology for ethanol production from sugarcane and describes the state of the art in vinasse AD, including technological trends, through a recent patent evaluation. It also appraises the integration of vinasse AD in an ideal sugarcane biorefinery approach. It finally discusses bottlenecks and presents possible directions for technology development and widespread adoption of this simple yet powerful approach for bioresource recovery.

Abstract
Anaerobic digestion technology is regarded as the most ideal technology for the treatment of a distiller in terms of environmental protection, resource utilization, and cost. However, there are some limitations to this process, the most prominent of which is microbial activity. The purpose of this paper is to provide a critical review of the microorganisms involved in the anaerobic digestion process of a distiller, with emphasis on the archaea community. The effects of operating parameters on microbial activity and process, such as pH, temperature, TAN, etc., are discussed. By understanding the activity of microorganisms, the anaerobic treatment technology of a distiller can be more mature. Aiming at the problem that anaerobic treatment of a distiller alone is not effective, the synergistic effect of different substrates is briefly discussed. In addition, the recent literature on the use of microorganisms to purify a distiller was collected in order to better purify the distiller and reduce harm. In the future, more studies are needed to elucidate the interactions between microorganisms and establish the mechanisms of microbial interactions in different environments.

Abstract
Biomethane recovered through anaerobic digestion (AD) is a renewable, sustainable, and cost-effective alternative energy source that has the potential to help address rising energy demands. Efficient bioconversion during AD depends on the symbiotic relationship between hydrolytic bacteria and methanogenic archaea. Interactions between microorganisms occur in every biological system via a phenomenon known as quorum sensing (QS), in which signaling molecules are simultaneously transmitted and detected as a mode of cell-to-cell communication. However, there's still a lack of understanding on how QS works in the AD system, where diverse bacteria and archaea interact in a complex manner. In this study, different concentrations (0.5 and 5 μM) of signaling molecules in the form of an N-acyl homoserine lactone cocktail (C6-, C8-, C10-, and 3-oxo-C6-HSL) were prepared and introduced into anaerobic batch reactors to clearly assess how QS affects AD systems. It was observed that the methane yield increased with the addition of AHLs: a 5 μM AHL cocktail improved the methane yield (341.9 mL/g-COD) compared to the control without AHLs addition (285.9 mL/g-COD). Meanwhile, evidence of improved microbial growth and cell aggregation was noticed in AHLs-supplemented systems. Our findings also show that exogenously adding AHLs alters the microbial community structure by increasing the overall bacterial and archaeal population counts while favoring the growth of the methanogenic archaea group, which is essential in biomethane synthesis.

Abstract
The ubiquitous signaling molecule autoinducer 2 (AI-2) is involved in intra- and interspecies communication, most notably between Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. AI-2 accumulates during the exponential phase of the Escherichia coli (E. coli) monoculture and then rapidly decreases upon entry into the stationary phase. However, deleting both the genes encoding AI-2 synthase (LuxS) and the lsr operon regulator (LsrR) in the E. coli genome causes impaired AI-2 production and continuous AI-2 scavenging from the environment. This genetically-engineered E. coli mutant capable of quenching AI-2 quorum sensing (QS) system was utilized to evaluate the effect of AI-2 quenching on the anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge (WAS) because the role of QS system via AI-2 in the process remains obscure. In this study, E. coli ∆luxS lsrR mutant cells were microencapsulated in sodium alginate beads and incubated with WAS anaerobically. After 15 days of anaerobic fermentation, the WAS containing double mutant cells produced significantly more methane than that of the parent E. coli cells. AI-2 quenching occurred concurrently with a shift of microbial communities that contribute to increasing acetate consumption by the Methanosarcina spp. resulting in an increase in methane production. KEY POINTS: • Impact of autoinducer 2 quenching in complex bacterial populations were determined. • Key microorganisms contributing to the increase of methane in WAS anaerobic digestion were found. • The AI-2 quenching is a potential regulatory in wastewater treatment and bioenergy research.
