Abstract
Importance Each approach for primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) has a long learning curve, so a surgeon's choice to change their preferred approach needs to be guided by clear justifications. However, current evidence does not suggest that any of the THA approaches are more beneficial than others, and the choice of approach is mainly based on the knowledge and experience of the surgeon and individual patient characteristics. Objective To assess the efficacy and safety associated with different surgical approaches for THA. Data Sources A comprehensive search of PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases from inception to March 26, 2022; reference lists of eligible trials; and related reviews. Study Selection Randomized clinical trials (RCTs) comparing different surgical approaches, including the 2-incision approach, direct anterior approach (DAA), direct lateral approach (DLA), minimally invasive direct lateral approach (MIS-DLA), minimally invasive anterolateral approach (MIS-ALA), posterior approach (PA), minimally invasive posterior approach (MIS-PA), and supercapsular percutaneously assisted total hip arthroplasty (SuperPath), for primary THA. Data Extraction and Synthesis Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses, 2 reviewers independently extracted data on study participants, interventions, and outcomes as well as assessed the risk of bias using the Cochrane risk of bias tool and the certainty of evidence using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation framework. A frequentist framework was used to inform a series of random-effects network meta-analyses. Main Outcomes and Measures The outcomes were hip score (range, 0-100, with higher scores indicating better overall hip condition), pain score (range, 0-100, with higher scores indicating more pain), hospitalization time, operation time, quality of life score, blood loss, cup abduction angle, and cup anteversion angle. Results Of 2130 retrieved studies, 63 RCTs including 4859 participants (median [IQR] age, 64.0 [60.3-66.5] years; median [IQR] percentage male, 46.74% [38.64%-54.74%]) were eligible for analysis. Eight surgical approaches were evaluated. For hip score, DAA (mean difference [MD], 4.04; 95% CI, 1.92 to 6.16; moderate certainty), MIS-ALA (MD, 3.00; 95% CI, 0.43 to 5.59; moderate certainty), MIS-DLA (MD, 3.37; 95% CI, 1.05 to 5.68; moderate certainty), MIS-PA (MD, 4.46; 95% CI, 1.60 to 7.31; moderate certainty), PA (MD, 4.37; 95% CI, 1.87 to 6.88; high certainty), and SuperPath (MD, 5.00; 95% CI, 0.58 to 9.42; high certainty) were associated with greater improvement in hip score compared with DLA. DLA was associated with lower decrease in pain score than SuperPath (MD, 1.16; 95% CI, 0.13 to 2.20; high certainty) and MIS-DLA (MD, 0.90; 95% CI, 0.04 to 1.76; moderate certainty). PA was associated with shorter operation times compared with 2-incision (MD, -23.85 minutes; 95% CI, -36.60 to -11.10 minutes; high certainty), DAA (MD, -13.94 minutes; 95% CI, -18.79 to -9.08 minutes; moderate certainty), DLA (MD, -10.50 minutes; 95% CI, -16.07 to -4.94 minutes; high certainty), MIS-ALA (MD, -6.76 minutes; 95% CI, -12.86 to -0.65 minutes; moderate certainty), and SuperPath (MD, -13.91 minutes; 95% CI, -21.87 to -5.95 minutes; moderate certainty). The incidence of 6 types of complications did not differ significantly between the approaches. Conclusions and Relevance In this study, moderate to high certainty evidence indicated that compared with PA, all surgical approaches except DLA were associated with similar improvements of hip score but longer operation time. DLA was associated with smaller improvement of hip score. The safety of the different approaches did not show significant differences. These findings will help health professionals and patients with better clinical decision-making and also provide references for policy makers.

Serum biomarkers for the assessment of muscle damage in various surgical approaches in primary total hip arthroplasty: a systematic review of comparative studies. Abstract
PURPOSE Using serum biomarkers, this systematic review assessed soft tissue injury following different total hip arthroplasty surgical approaches. The purposes were to determine if there is any advantage between the standard and minimal invasive approaches, and to compare tissue damage of the respective surgical approaches using biomarkers such as creatine kinase, myoglobin, c-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, skeletal troponin and interleukins. METHOD A search in Pubmed/MEDLINE, Scopus and Web of Science databases was conducted in October 2021 with the use of PRISMA guidelines. Search items were ("biomarkers" OR "markers" OR "tissue damage" OR "muscle damage") AND "approach" AND ("total hip arthroplasty" OR "total hip replacement"). Inclusion criteria were prospective, randomized, controlled trials or prospective, comparative studies, comparing serum markers for muscle damage in two or more surgical approaches for primary total hip arthroplasty. Exclusion criteria were study protocols, case reports, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, studies in non-English language or without available full text, and studies not recording biomarkers of muscle damage. RESULTS Initial search revealed 508 studies; after subtraction of duplicates, and exclusion criteria, 31 studies remained for analysis. No advantage between different approaches was found when evaluating biomarkers, and no specific biomarkers had a distinct role in tissue damage in total hip arthroplasty. Anterior and minimally invasive approaches were associated with lower values of soft tissue (creatine kinase) and inflammation (c-reactive protein) biomarkers compared to the standard approaches. CONCLUSION Measurement of serum biomarkers after primary total hip arthroplasty for the estimation of tissue damage has unclear or little clinical value. Abstract
Introduction The present systematic review investigated possible factors which may influence the surgical outcome of minimally invasive surgery for total hip arthroplasty (MIS THA). Methods In January 2022, the Embase, Google Scholar, PubMed, and Scopus databases were accessed. All the clinical trials investigating the clinical outcome of MIS THA were considered.
Results Data from 9486 procedures were collected. Older age was moderately associated with greater Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) (P = 0.02) and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) (P = 0.009) at last follow-up, and shorter surgical duration (P = 0.01). Greater body mass index (BMI) at baseline was moderately associated with greater cup anteversion (P = 0.0009), Oxford Hip Score (OHS) at last follow-up (P = 0.04), longer surgical duration (P = 0.04), increased leg length discrepancy (P = 0.02), and greater rate of infection (P = 0.04). Greater VAS at baseline was weakly associated with greater VAS at last follow-up (P < 0.0001), total estimated blood lost (P = 0.01), and lower value of Harris Hip Score (HHS) (P = 0.0005). Greater OHS at baseline was associated with greater post-operative VAS (P = 0.01). Greater WOMAC at baseline was associated with lower cup anteversion (P = 0.009) and greater VAS (P = 0.02). Greater HHS at baseline was associated with shorter hospitalisation (P = 0.001). Conclusion Older age and greater BMI may represent negative prognostic factors for MIS THA. The clinical outcome is strongly influenced by the preoperative status of patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION There is controversy about the role of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) for total hip arthroplasty (THA). The present study aimed to investigate whether a MIS approach has a positive impact on the outcome of THA via the Watson-Jones anterolateral approach. Clinical scores and radiological findings of minimally and standard invasive exposures were evaluated and compared. METHODS The present study was conducted according to the STROBE statement. Patients operated between 2017 and 2018 in two different orthopaedic institutions was performed. Patients with symptomatic coxarthrosis reducing considerably patient's quality of life were asked to participate in the present study. Patients were divided into two THA groups: MIS and standard invasive surgery (SIS). Surgical procedures were performed in by two experienced surgeons via the Watson-Jones approach. RESULTS Data from 140 patients were collected (70 patients for each group) at two years follow-up. Leg length discrepancy was greater in the MIS cohort (P = 0.01). The Stiffness subscale of the WOMAC score resulted minimally increased in the SIS group (P = 0.03). The overall WOMAC score and the other subscales resulted similar between the two groups. Femoral offset, acetabular offset, cup orientation, cup inclination, VAS resulted similar between the two cohorts. Only a case of revision in the SIS group was reported. CONCLUSION THA via the Watson-Jones approach achieves short terms excellent results. Surgery performed via a MIS approach does not provide any superior outcome compared to the SIS in terms of radiographic findings and clinical scores at two years follow-up.

Abstract
Background:Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) is the final treatment of end-stage hip osteoarthritis. Nowadays, THA has become very common, cost- effective and one of the most successful orthopaedic procedures. Recently, surgeons have shifted their interest to approaches according to Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS). These approaches are either modifications of conventional approaches or they are designed from the beginning as MIS approaches. Muscle damage and soft tissue damage are issues that concern researchers who perform studies on THA.Objective:The aim of this study is to review the literature concerning studies by comparing different approaches using serum and inflammatory markers for muscle and soft tissue damage.Methods:We searched the PubMed database in the English language systematically for clinical studies or reviews, comparing muscle damage according to serum markers between two or more approaches in primary total arthroplasty.Results:In total, twenty-one studies were included in this review. Although the results are controversial, it seems that MIS approaches in most of the studies were related to lower levels of inflammation markers contrasting with conventional approaches. Nevertheless, this difference in muscle damage is not correlated with a difference in functional scores or other perioperative data and clinical outcomes in all studies.Conclusion:The existing literature does not lead to a safe consensus about the superiority of any approach. Therefore, there is still a need for further research with well-designed studies.

Abstract
PURPOSE: Choice of the best mini invasive surgical approach for total hip replacement remains a controversial topic. The posterior approach is traditionally associated with a higher dislocation rate and the obligation of postoperative restrictions. Soft tissue repair reduces the risk of dislocation yet, posterior closure it is often challenging because of capsular and external rotator contractures. In this article, an original procedure of capsular lengthening and tension-free closure is described and the results of a retrospective single surgeon series of minimally invasive posterior total hip replacement (THR) with capsular repair are presented. METHODS: A total of 925 mini posterior total hip replacements performed between 2009 and 2015 were retrospectively reviewed. 2 original types of capsulorrhaphy to decrease tension of the repaired tissues were employed. Absence of posterior envelope stretch during flexion and internal rotation was confirmed intraoperatively with a dynamic test. No postoperative restrictions were used. RESULTS: Capsular lengthening with 1 of the described techniques was required in over 50% of cases for a tension-free closure. 3 patients dislocated in the 867 reviewed procedures (0.35%), 1 requiring revision for instability (0.11%). CONCLUSIONS: This soft tissue repair technique after mini posterior approach THR is technically easy, provides a tension-free closure and a low dislocation rate.

Abstract
The mini-incision posterior approach may appeal to surgeons comfortable with the standard posterior approach to the hip. We present the first systematic review and meta-analysis of these two approaches. Twelve randomised controlled trials and four non-randomised trials comprising of 1498 total hip arthroplasties were included. The mini-incision posterior approach was associated with an early improvement in Harris hip score of 1.8 points (P<0.001), reduced operating time (5minutes, P<0.001), length of hospital stay (14hours, P<0.001), intraoperative and total blood loss (63ml, P<0.001 and 119ml, P<0.001 respectively). There were no statistically significant differences in the incidence of dislocation, nerve injury, infection or venous thromboembolic events. The minimally invasive posterior approach appears to provide a safe and acceptable alternative to the standard incision posterior approach.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare outcome after total hip arthroplasty (THA) through the mini-incision approach versus the standard transgluteal approach. METHODS 80 women and 63 men aged 33 to 89 (mean, 62) years with primary osteoarthritis of the hip were randomised to undergo unilateral THA through a mini-incision approach (Micro-hip, n=55) or standard, lateral, transgluteal approach (Bauer, n=88). Levels of haemoglobin, haematocrit, serum creatine kinase, and C-reactive protein, length of hospital stay, mobilisation, and any complication were recorded. Visual analogue scale (VAS) for pain was assessed. Hip function was assessed using the Harris Hip Score and the Oxford Hip Score, whereas general health was assessed using the EQ-5D general health questionnaire. The cup inclination and varus/valgus of the stem position were measured using a goniometer. RESULTS The Micro-hip group achieved a significantly lower mean incision length (9.3 vs. 13.4 cm, p<0.001), mean surgical time (60 vs. 68 minutes, p=0.021), mean reduction in haemoglobin level (2.1 vs. 2.8 g/dl, p<0.001), and mean VAS for pain from hour 6 to day 6 (all p<0.05). One patient in the Micro-hip group developed early aseptic loosening of the cup and underwent revision surgery at month 4. Three patients in the Bauer group and one patient in the Micro-hip group sustained intra-operative nondisplaced fractures of the proximal femur, which were fixed with cerclages. Two patients in the Microhip group developed deep vein thrombosis during week 1. CONCLUSION THA through the Micro-hip approach achieved faster pain relief.

Abstract
Purpose It remains controversial whether mini-incision (MI) benefits patients in total hip arthroplasty (THA). We performed a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to assess the effects of MI on surgical and functional outcomes in THA patients. Methods A systematic electronic literature search (up to May 2013) was conducted to identify RCTs comparing MI with standard incision (SI) THA. The primary outcome measures were surgical and functional outcomes. According to the surgical approach taken, MI THA patients were divided into four subgroups for sub-group meta-analysis. Standardized mean differences (SMDs) or risk differences (RDs) with accompanying 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated and pooled using a fixed-effect or random-effect model according to the heterogeneity. Results A total of 14 RCTs involving THA 1,174 patients met the inclusion criteria. The trials were medium risk of bias. The overall meta-analysis showed MI THA reduced total blood loss (95% CI, -201.83 to -21.18; p=.02) and length of hospital stay ( 95% CI, -0.67 to -0.08; p=.01) with significant heterogeneity. However, subgroup meta-analysis revealed posterior MI THA had perioperative advantages of reduced surgical duration ( 95% CI, -8.45 to -2.67; P<.001), less blood loss ( 95% CI, -107.20 to -1.73; P=.04) and shorter hospital stay ( 95% CI, -0.74 to -0.06; p=.002) with low heterogeneity. There were no significant differences between MI and SI THA groups in term of pain medication dose, functional outcome (HHS), radiological outcome or complications (P>.05, respectively). Conclusions Although no definite overall conclusion can be arrived at on whether MI THA is superior to SI THA, posterior MI THA clearly result in a significant decrease in surgical duration, blood loss and hospital stay. It seems to be a safe minimally invasive surgical procedure without increasing the risk of component malposition or complications.

Abstract
PURPOSE Mini invasive incisions in THA and femoral hip prostheses tend to minimise healing and recovery time. We have used a very posterior approach with technical modifications and precise skin landmarks to decrease surgical complexity, and we describe this experience here. METHODS From 2010 to 2012, 140 patients aged 79 years (range 53-93 years) were operated upon by the same surgeon in a continuous series using the same minimally invasive skin incision and six different types of implants. The incision was very posterior in the hip allowing direct visualisation of the acetabulum in the hip flexion position and visualisation of the femoral shaft extremity in a leg flexion position. RESULTS The mean operating time was 100 minutes (range 75-110 min). Estimated blood loss was 385 cc (20-585 cc). Twenty-six patients had blood transfusion. The mean hospital stay was 6.8 days (5-20 days) including the time waiting for a rehabilitation centre. No operative complications related to the technique were recorded. On the postoperative radiograph, the femoral stem was aligned with the femoral axis within 3° in all patients. The mean acetabular angle to the ground plane was 40° (35-48°). No patient had a leg length discrepancy of more than four millimetres. The mean skin incision length was seven centimetres (six to eight centimetres). All patients were seen at the clinic after six weeks and the data were unchanged at this time point. CONCLUSION The method and skin landmarks we describe appear to be a safe way to perform minimally invasive total hip replacement.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The literature comparing limited incision and standard incision THAs is confusing regarding whether limited incision THA improves short-term recovery without compromising long-term durability and survival. Further, previously published meta-analyses cannot conclude that limited incision THA is better. With new data, we seek to discover if the answers now exist. PURPOSE We used meta-analysis to compare surgical and hospitalization data, clinical outcomes, and complication rates, and thus (1) confirm whether limited incision THA is at least comparable to standard incision THA; and (2) determine whether limited incision THA is an improvement over standard incision THA. METHODS The PubMed database was searched using the terms "minimally", "invasive", and "total hip". Inclusion was limited to studies directly comparing limited incision with standard incision THA and reporting effect sizes. RESULTS We identified 418 articles. Of these 11 provided background information and 30 provided data (3548 THAs) for the systematic review. Limited incision THA was better than standard incision THA in four measures: length of hospitalization (6 versus 7 days), VAS pain at discharge (2 versus 4), blood loss (421 mL versus 494 mL), and the Harris hip score at 3 months postoperation (90 versus 84). There were no outcomes for which standard incision was better. There was no major difference in the rate of complications. CONCLUSIONS Short-term recovery favors limited incision over standard incision THA. The lack of consistent reporting for surgical outcomes, clinical outcomes, and complications continues to create difficulties when comparing limited and standard incision THAs.

Abstract
The concept that small incisions lead to a better outcome in many procedures has extended into most surgical areas, orthopaedic surgery among them. However, in some cases there is not enough scientific evidence to recommend these procedures. This article attempts to provide an updated review of the works published with sufficient scientific evidence on the advantages of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) compared to conventional access approaches. The published articles, meta-analyses and systematic literature reviews with level I or II evidence are reviewed in topographic order. Wherever possible, the information available on the costs-benefits of this type of surgery is also reviewed.

Abstract
The purpose of this meta-analysis was to investigate whether single-incision minimally invasive total hip arthroplasty (THA) is superior to conventional incision THA by comparing postoperative complication rates, Harris Hip Scores, and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC) scores. Randomized, controlled trials comparing single-incision minimally invasive THA and conventional THA were reviewed. The methodological quality of each randomized, controlled trial was assessed using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) scale (Centre for Evidence-based Physiotherapy, The George Institute for Global Health, New South Wales, Australia). The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach was used to determine the quality of the evidence. Fourteen studies involving 1254 patients (1329 hips) were included in the meta-analysis, comprising 659 single-incision minimally invasive THAs (mean patient age, 63.9 years) and 670 conventional incision THAs (mean patient age, 65.0 years). A funnel plot of postoperative complication rates showed that a slight publication bias existed in the study. According to the meta-analysis, no significant statistical difference was observed in complication rates in no more than 3 postoperative years (odds ratio=1.06; 95% confidence interval, 0.69 to 1.63; P=.79), in Harris Hip Scores in no more than 2 postoperative years (weighted mean difference=0.71; 95% confidence interval, -3.09 to 4.51; P=.71), and in WOMAC scores at 6 weeks postoperatively (weighted mean difference=-0.55; 95% confidence interval, -3.54 to 2.44; P=.72) between single-incision minimally invasive THA and conventional THA. Therefore, single-incision minimally invasive THA is not superior to conventional THA in early postoperative recovery, hip function, and complication rate.

Abstract
Background Minimally invasive total hip arthroplasty (MITHA) remains considerably controversial. Limited visibility and prosthesis malposition increase the risk of post-surgical complications compared to those of the traditional method. Methods A meta-analysis was undertaken of all published databases up to May 2011. The studies were divided into four subgroups according to the surgical approach taken. The radiological outcomes and complications of minimally invasive surgery were compared to traditional total hip arthroplasty (TTHA) using risk ratio, mean difference, and standardized mean difference statistics. Results In five studies involving the posterolateral approach, no significant differences were found between the MITHA groups and the TTHA groups in the acetabular cup abduction angle (p = 0.41), acetabular anteversion (p = 0.96), and femoral prosthesis position (p = 0.83). However, the femoral offset was significantly increased (WMD = 3.00; 95% CI, 0.40–5.60; p = 0.02). Additionally, there were no significant differences among the complications in both the groups (dislocations, nerve injury, infection, deep vein thrombosis, proximal femoral fracture) and revision rate (p>0.05). In three studies involving the posterior approach, there were no significant differences in radiological outcomes or all other complications between MITHA or TTHA groups (p>0.05). Three studies involved anterolateral approach, while 2 studies used the lateral approach. However, the information from imaging and complications was not adequate for statistical analysis. Conclusions Posterior MITHA seems to be a safe surgical procedure, without the increased risk of post-operative complication rates and component malposition rates. The posterolateral approach THA may lead to increased femoral offset. The current data are not enough to reach a positive conclusion that lateral and anterolateral approaches will result in increased risks of adverse effects and complications at the prosthesis site.

Abstract
We undertook a randomised controlled trial to compare the piriformis-sparing approach with the standard posterior approach used for total hip replacement (THR). We recruited 100 patients awaiting THR and randomly allocated them to either the piriformis-sparing approach or the standard posterior approach. Pre- and post-operative care programmes and rehabilitation regimes were identical for both groups. Observers were blinded to the allocation throughout; patients were blinded until the two-week assessment. Follow-up was at six weeks, three months, one year and two years. In all 11 patients died or were lost to follow-up. There was no significant difference between groups for any of the functional outcomes. However, for patients in the piriformis-sparing group there was a trend towards a better six-minute walk test at two weeks and greater patient satisfaction at six weeks. The acetabular components were less anteverted (p = 0.005) and had a lower mean inclination angle (p = 0.02) in the piriformis-sparing group. However, in both groups the mean component positions were within Lewinnek’s safe zone. Surgeons perceived the piriformis-sparing approach to be significantly more difficult than the standard approach (p = 0.03), particularly in obese patients. In conclusion, performing THR through a shorter incision involving sparing piriformis is more difficult and only provides short-term benefits compared with the standard posterior approach.

Abstract
Anterolateral minimally invasive hip surgery (ALMIS) is a challenging procedure that is thought to offer a more expedient and a better functional outcome. Seventy-nine patients receiving primary hip arthroplasty were randomized. Röttinger ALMIS technique was used for 42 patients, whereas 41 received the standard lateral transgluteal Hardinge approach. Operative time was longer with ALMIS (P = .000078), whereas blood loss was less (P = .008). Surgical and postoperative complication rates, morphine consumption, and length and cost of hospitalization were similar. At 1 year, Harris, Postel and Merle d'Aubigné, and Short Form-36v1 scores were similar. Gait analysis revealed similar results. Computed tomographic analysis revealed no significant difference in implant position, heterotopic ossification, and loosening. Röttinger ALMIS is a valid approach for hip arthroplasty. However, it offers no advantages at 1 year.

Abstract
PURPOSE The development of minimal-incision techniques for total hip replacement with preservation of soft tissue is generally associated with faster rehabilitation, reduction of postoperative pain and increased patient comfort. The aim of this study was to compare a minimal-incision anterior approach with a transgluteal lateral technique for hip replacement surgery with respect to postoperative pain, consumption of rescue medication, length of hospital stay and time to reach a defined range of motion. METHODS In this retrospective cohort study we investigated 100 patients with a minimal-incision anterior approach (group I) and 100 patients with a transgluteal lateral approach (group II) retrospectively undergoing unilateral hip replacement. The study variables were pain at rest and during physiotherapy, amount of rescue medication, the time to reach a defined flexion and time in hospital. RESULTS The patients of group I consumed less rescue medication (19.6 ± 6.9 mg vs. 23.6 ± 11.3 mg; p = 0.005) and experienced less pain on the day of surgery (1.3 ± 1 vs. 2.3 ± 1.3, p = 0.0001) and the first postoperative day (0.41 ± 0.8 vs. 0.66 ± 1.1, p = 0.036). The time to reach the defined range of motion (6.4 ± 2 days vs. 7.4 ± 2.1 days; p = 0.001) and the length of hospital stay were shorter (10.2 ± 1.9 days vs. 13.4 ± 1.6 days; p = 0.0001) for group I. However, pain during physiotherapy was higher on the third and sixth through ninth days after surgery in comparison to group II (p = 0.001-0.013). CONCLUSION The implantation of a hip prosthesis through a minimal-incision anterior approach is successful in reducing postoperative pain and consumption of pain medication. Time to recovery and length of hospital stay are also influenced positively. Pain increases during physiotherapy, and may be mitigated by adopting limited weight bearing during the early postoperative period.

Abstract
Over the past decade, minimally invasive surgery has gained popularity as a means of optimising early postoperative rehabilitation and increasing patient satisfaction and cosmesis following total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, this surgical exposure has also been associated with increased risk of iatrogenic nerve injury and implant mal-positioning due to limited visibility compared to conventionally larger surgical incisions. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to compare the outcomes of these two surgical exposures. A systematic review of the published and unpublished literature was conducted to include all randomised and non-randomised controlled trials comparing the clinical and radiological outcomes of minimally invasive and conventional THA procedures. In total, 28 studies met the eligibility criteria and included 2,849 hips, i.e. 1,428 minimally invasive compared to 1,421 conventional THAs. The meta-analysis of the current evidence base showed that minimally invasive THA is associated with a significantly increased risk of transient lateral femoral cutaneous nerve palsy (p = 0.006) with no significantly better outcome.
