In situ burning restores the ecological function and structure of an oil-impacted coastal marsh

Wetland Biomass and Productivity in Coastal Louisiana: Base Line Data (1976–2015) and Knowledge Gaps for the Development of Spatially Explicit Models for Ecosystem Restoration and Rehabilitation Initiatives

Coastal Louisiana hosts 37% of the coastal wetland area in the conterminous US, including one of the deltaic coastal regions more susceptible to the synergy of human and natural impacts causing wetland loss. As a result of the construction of flood protection infrastructure, dredging of channels across wetlands for oil/gas exploration and maritime transport activities, coastal Louisiana has lost approximately 4900 km2 of wetland area since the early 1930s. Despite the economic relevance of both wetland biomass and net primary productivity (NPP) as ecosystem services, there is a lack of vegetation simulation models to forecast the trends of those functional attributes at the landscape level as hydrological restoration projects are implemented. Here, we review the availability of peer-reviewed biomass and NPP wetland data (below and aboveground) published during the period 1976–2015 for use in the development, calibration and validation of high spatial resolution (<200 m × 200 m) vegetation process-based ecological models. We discuss and list the knowledge gaps for those species that represent vegetation community associations of ecological importance, including the long-term research issues associated to limited number of paired belowground biomass and productivity studies across hydrological basins currently undergoing different freshwater diversions management regimes and hydrological restoration priorities.

Comparative evaluation of bioremediation techniques on oil contaminated sediments in long-term recovery of benthic community health

While various bioremediation techniques have been widely used at oil spill sites, the in situ efficiency of such techniques on recovering the benthic communities in intertidal areas has not been quantified. Here, the performance of several bioremediation tools such as emulsifiers, multi-enzyme liquid (MEL), microbes, and rice-straw was evaluated by a 90-days semi-field experiment, particularly targeting recovery of benthic community. Temporal efficiency in the removal of sedimentary total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), reduction of residual toxicity, and recovery of bacterial diversity, microalgal growth, and benthic production was comprehensively determined. Concentrations of TPH and amphipod mortality for all treatments rapidly decreased within the first 10 days. In addition, the density of bacteria and microphytobenthos generally increased over time for all treatments, indicating recovery in the benthic community health. However, the recovery of some nitrifying bacteria, such as the class Nitrospinia (which are sensitive to oil components) remained incomplete (13-56%) during 90 days. Combination of microbe treatments showed rapid and effective for recovering the benthic community, but after 90 days, all treatments showed high recovery efficiency. Of consideration, the "no action" treatment showed a similar level of recovery to those of microbe and MEL treatments, indicating that the natural recovery process could prevail in certain situations.

Vegetation recovery in an oil-impacted and burned Phragmites australis tidal freshwater marsh

In-situ burning of oiled marshes is a cleanup method that can be more effective and less damaging than intrusive manual and mechanical methods. In-situ burning of oil spills has been examined for several coastal marsh types; however, few published data are available for Phragmites australis marshes. Following an estimated 4200gallon crude oil spill and in-situ burn in a Phragmites tidal freshwater marsh at Delta National Wildlife Refuge (Mississippi River Delta, Louisiana), we examined vegetation impacts and recovery across 3years. Oil concentrations in marsh soils were initially elevated in the oiled-and-burned sites, but were below background levels within three months. Oiling and burning drastically affected the marsh vegetation; the formerly dominant Phragmites, a non-native variety in our study sites, had not fully recovered by the end of our study. However, overall vegetation recovery was rapid and local habitat quality in terms of native plants, particularly Sagittaria species, and wildlife value was enhanced by burning. In-situ burning appears to be a viable response option to consider for future spills in marshes with similar plant species composition, hydrogeomorphic settings, and oiling conditions. In addition, likely Phragmites stress from high water levels and/or non-native scale insect damage was also observed during our study and has recently been reported as causing widespread declines or loss of Phragmites stands in the Delta region. It remains an open question if these stressors could lead to a shift to more native vegetation, similar to what we observed following the oil spill and burn. Increased dominance by native plants may be desirable as local patches, but widespread loss of Phragmites, even if replaced by native species, could further acerbate coastal erosion and wetland loss, a major concern in the region.
