Estimated soil respiration rates decreased with long-term soil microclimate changes in successional forests in southern China

Effects of the interception of litterfall by the understory on carbon cycling in eucalyptus plantations of South China

For the purposes of forest restoration, carbon (C) fixation, and economic improvement, eucalyptus (Eucalyptus urophylla) has been widely planted in South China. The understory of eucalyptus plantations is often occupied by a dense community of the fern Dicranopteris dichotoma, which intercepts tree canopy leaf litter before it reaches the ground. To understand the effects of this interception of litterfall on C cycling in eucalyptus plantations, we quantified the mass of intercepted litter and the influences of litterfall interception on litter decomposition and soil respiration. The total mass of E. urophylla litterfall collected on the understory was similar to that collected by the traditional litter trap method. All of the eucalyptus litterfall is intercepted by the D. dichotoma canopy. Of the litterfall that was intercepted by D. dichotoma, 20–40% and 60–80% was intercepted by the top (50–100 cm) and bottom (0–50 cm) of the understory canopy, respectively. Intercepted litterfall decomposed faster at the bottom of understory canopy (at the base of the plants) than at the top, and decomposition was slower on the soil surface in the absence of understory than on any location in the understory canopy. Soil respiration was highest when both the understory and litter were present and was lowest when both the understory and litter were absent. These results indicate that litterfall interception changed carbon flow between aboveground and belowground through litter decomposition and soil respiration, which changed carbon cycling in eucalyptus plantations. The effects of the understory on litter decomposition and soil respiration should be considered in ecosystem carbon models.

Evaluation of net primary productivity and its spatial and temporal patterns in southern China’s grasslands

The net primary productivity (NPP) of grassland ecosystems is an important indicator of the capacity for carbon (C) absorption. The Global Production Efficiency Model was adopted to simulate NPP in southern China’s grasslands and to analyse the temporal and spatial dynamics from 1981 to 2000. There was a high correlation between measured and simulated values (R2 = 0.84). Based on the data from 1981 to 2000, the mean annual NPP was 1082 g C m–2 year–1, and the highest value (1798 g C m–2 year–1) was in Hainan province, and the lowest value (500 g C m–2 year–1) was in south-western Tibet. The highest mean NPP values were in the permanent wetlands (1193 g C m–2 year–1) and savannas (1137 g C m–2 year–1); woody savannas had an intermediate value (1087 g C m–2 year–1), and the lowest NPP occurred in typical grasslands and open shrubs, the mean values were 709 and 689 g C m–2 year–1, respectively. Temporally, the total NPP in southern China’s grasslands slightly increased in the 20-year period, especially from 1981 to 1990. The mean annual total of NPP in the 20 years was 0.758 Pg C. Inter-annual variation in total NPP was driven mainly by mean annual temperature rather than mean annual precipitation. The results suggest that grassland ecosystems in southern China have a large C sink.

Overview of contemporary issues of forest research and management in China

With 207 million ha of forest covering 22% of its land area, China ranks fifth in the world in forest area. Rapid economic growth, climate change, and forest disturbances pose new, complex challenges for forest research and management. Progress in meeting these challenges is relevant beyond China, because China's forests represent 34% of Asia's forests and 5% of the worlds' forests. To provide a broader understanding of these management challenges and of research and policies that address them, we organized this special issue on contemporary forest research and management issues in China. At the national level, papers review major forest types and the evolution of sustainable forestry, the development of China's forest-certification efforts, the establishment of a forest inventory system, and achievements and challenges in insect pest control in China. Papers focused on Northern China address historical, social, and political factors that have shaped the region's forests; the use of forest landscape models to assess how forest management can achieve multiple objectives; and analysis and modeling of fuels and fire behavior. Papers addressing Central and South China describe the "Grain for Green" program, which converts low productivity cropland to grassland and woodland to address erosion and soil carbon sequestration; the potential effects of climate change on CO(2) efflux and soil respiration; and relationships between climate and net primary productivity. China shares many forest management and research issues with other countries, but in other cases China's capacity to respond to forest management challenges is unique and bears watching by the rest of the world.
