Rates of breast reconstruction uptake and attitudes toward breast cancer and survivorship among south asians: A literature review

Our aim in this review was to ascertain rates of breast reconstruction among South Asian patients and identify attitudes towards breast cancer, survivorship, and breast reconstruction. Mastectomy rates for South Asian patients ranged from 52% to 77% and reconstruction following mastectomy varied from 0% to 14%. A negative perception of cancer, fears of social isolation, and taboos around breasts can prevent South Asian women from receiving surgical care after a breast cancer diagnosis.

Global Access to Comprehensive Care for Paediatric and Congenital Heart Disease

Paediatric and congenital heart disease (PCHD) is common but remains forgotten on the global health agenda. Congenital heart disease is the most frequent major congenital anomaly, affecting approximately 1 in every 100 live births. In high-income countries, most children now live into adulthood, whereas in low- and middle-income countries, over 90% of patients do not get the care they need. Rheumatic heart disease is the most common acquired cardiovascular disease in children and adolescents. While almost completely eradicated in high-income countries, over 30-40 million people live with rheumatic heart disease in low- and middle-income countries. Challenges exist in the care for PCHD and, increasingly, adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) worldwide. In this review, we summarize the current status of PCHD and ACHD care through the health systems lens of workforce, infrastructure, financing, service delivery, information management and technology, and governance. We further highlight gaps in knowledge and opportunities moving forward to improve access to care for all those living with PCHD or ACHD worldwide.

Survival in general surgery: The female surgeons' perspective

Objective

Specialty choices in health profession has long been influenced by gender. The field of General Surgery remains the least preferred specialty by females, especially in Pakistan. The objective of this study was to identify the factors leading to success and retention of females in General Surgery in Pakistan.

Methods

Qualitative case study was conducted from February to May 2020 at Khyber Medical University, Peshawar. Ten semi-structured interviews were conducted with purposive sample of female surgeons at various academic position in different tertiary care hospitals of Pakistan. Data were thematically analyzed.

Results

Participants were driven by their passion for surgery, which led them to choose this specialty in the beginning. Their survival in male dominant workplace was made possible by their own personality traits and conducive environment provided by the supervisors and peers. However, a structured mentorship program for females was found lacking.

Conclusion

The necessary ingredients for success are passion and personality traits in any field but attention to nurturing and supportive environment for females in the General Surgery is paramount in determining success. Due consideration to the factors identified in the current study will enhance the retention and success of females in General Surgery.
