The Draft Genome Sequence of Clostridium beijerinckii NJP7, a Unique Bacterium Capable of Producing Isopropanol-Butanol from Hemicellulose Through Consolidated Bioprocessing

The draft genome sequence of Rhodosporidium toruloides strain Z11, an isolate capable of co-producing lipids and carotenoids from waste molasses

A wild-type Rhodosporidium toruloides strain Z11 which could utilize molasses to co-produce high amount of lipid and carotenoids was isolated and characterized. The genome of strain Z11 with a G + C content of 59.0% was estimated to be 22.6 Mb and contained 5290 encoded protein sequences. Among these annotated genes, the ATP citrate (pro-S)-lyase, two malic enzymes (MaeA and MaeB) and the geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate synthase play key roles for the production of lipids and carotenoids. In addition, a β-fructofuranosidase (SacA) was identified, which may contribute to the utilization of molasses.

Plant celluloses, hemicelluloses, lignins, and volatile oils for the synthesis of nanoparticles and nanostructured materials

A huge variety of plants are harvested worldwide and their different constituents can be converted into a broad range of bionanomaterials. In parallel, much research effort in materials science and engineering is focused on the formation of nanoparticles and nanostructured materials originating from agricultural residues. Cellulose (40-50%), hemicellulose (20-40%), and lignin (20-30%) represent major plant ingredients and many techniques have been described that separate the main plant components for the synthesis of nanocelluloses, nano-hemicelluloses, and nanolignins with divergent and controllable properties. The minor components, such as essential oils, could also be used to produce non-toxic metal and metal oxide nanoparticles with high bioavailability, biocompatibility, and/or bioactivity. This review describes the chemical structure, the physical and chemical properties of plant cell constituents, different techniques for the synthesis of nanocelluloses, nanohemicelluloses, and nanolignins from various lignocellulose sources and agricultural residues, and the extraction of volatile oils from plants as well as their use in metal and metal oxide nanoparticle production and emulsion preparation. Furthermore, details about the formation of activated carbon nanomaterials by thermal treatment of lignocellulose materials, a few examples of mineral extraction from agriculture waste for nanoparticle fabrication, and the emerging applications of plant-based nanomaterials in different fields, such as biotechnology and medicine, environment protection, environmental remediation, or energy production and storage, are also included. This review also briefly discusses the recent developments and challenges of obtaining nanomaterials from plant residues, and the issues surrounding toxicity and regulation.

Acetone-free biobutanol production: Past and recent advances in the Isopropanol-Butanol-Ethanol (IBE) fermentation

Production of butanol for fuel via the conventional Acetone-Butanol-Ethanol fermentation has been considered economically risky because of a potential oversupply of acetone. Alternatively, acetone is converted into isopropanol by specific solventogenic Clostridium species in the Isopropanol-Butanol-Ethanol (IBE) fermentation. This route, although less efficient, has been gaining attention because IBE mixtures are a potential fuel. The present work is dedicated to reviewing past and recent advances in microorganisms, feedstock, and fermentation equipment for IBE production. In our analysis we demonstrate the importance of novel engineered IBE-producing Clostridium strains and cell retention systems to decrease the staggering number of fermentation tanks required by IBE plants equipped with conventional technology. We also summarize the recent progress on recovery techniques integrated with fermentation, especially gas stripping. In addition, we assessed ongoing pilot-plant efforts that have been enabling IBE production from woody feedstock.

Recent advances of biofuels and biochemicals production from sustainable resources using co-cultivation systems

Microbial communities are ubiquitous in nature and exhibit several attractive features, such as sophisticated metabolic capabilities and strong environment robustness. Inspired by the advantages of natural microbial consortia, diverse artificial co-cultivation systems have been metabolically constructed for biofuels, chemicals and natural products production. In these co-cultivation systems, especially genetic engineering ones can reduce the metabolic burden caused by the complex of metabolic pathway through labor division, and improve the target product production significantly. This review summarized the most up-to-dated co-cultivation systems used for biofuels, chemicals and nature products production. In addition, major challenges associated with co-cultivation systems are also presented and discussed for meeting further industrial demands.

The Draft Genome Sequence of a Novel High-Efficient Butanol-Producing Bacterium Clostridium Diolis Strain WST

A wild-type solventogenic strain Clostridium diolis WST, isolated from mangrove sediments, was characterized to produce high amount of butanol and acetone with negligible level of ethanol and acids from glucose via a unique acetone-butanol (AB) fermentation pathway. Through the genomic sequencing, the assembled draft genome of strain WST is calculated to be 5.85 Mb with a GC content of 29.69% and contains 5263 genes that contribute to the annotation of 5049 protein-coding sequences. Within these annotated genes, the butanol dehydrogenase gene (bdh) was determined to be in a higher amount from strain WST compared to other Clostridial strains, which is positively related to its high-efficient production of butanol. Therefore, we present a draft genome sequence analysis of strain WST in this article that should facilitate to further understand the solventogenic mechanism of this special microorganism.
