Abstract
Low-molecular-mass gelators, due to their excellent biocompatibility, low toxicological profile, innate biodegradability and ease of fabrication have garnered significant interest as they self-assemble through non-covalent interactions. In this study, we have designed and synthesized a series of six α-amidoamides by varying the hydrophobic alkyl chain length (C12-C22), which were well characterized using different spectral techniques. These α-amidoamides formed self-assembled aggregates in a DMSO/water solvent system affording organo/hydrogels at 0.66% w/v, which is the minimum gelation concentration (MGC) making them as remarkable supergelators. The various functionalities present in these gelators such as amides and alkyl chain length pave the way toward excellent gelation mechanism through hydrogen bonding and van der Waals interaction as evidenced from FTIR spectroscopy. Notably, as the chain length increased, organo/hydrogels became more thermally stable. Rheological results showed that the stability and strength of these gelators were considerably impacted by variations in chain length. The SEM morphology revealed dense sheet architectures of the organo/hydrogel samples. Organo/hydrogels have a significant impact on the advancement of innovative drug delivery systems that respond to various stimuli, ushering in a new era in pharmaceutical technology. Inspired by this, we encapsulated curcumin, a chemopreventive medication, into the gel core and further released via gel-to-sol transition induced by pH variation at 37 °C, without any alteration in structure-activity relationship. The drug release behavior was observed by UV-vis spectroscopy. Moreover, cell viability and cell invasion experiments demonstrate that the gel formulations exhibit high biocompatibility and low cytotoxicity. Among the tested formulations, 5e+Cur exhibited remarkable efficacy in controlling A549 cell migration, suggesting significant potential for applications in the pharmaceutical industry.

Abstract
Infections caused by bacteria are the primary cause of illness and death globally, and antibiotics are the most commonly used medications to treat them. However, there are certain inherent problems in administering these drugs without any changes to their effectiveness. In order to sustain the targeted dosage over time, the use of a biocompatible local drug delivery system using low molecular mass gelators is preferred as a potential approach to reduce its side effects. Low molecular weight organic gelators (LMWOGs) have drawn a lot of attention due to their numerous and varied applications in multiple fields. But nowadays its quite a challenging task to synthesize new types of LMWOGs that can fill the significant gap towards potential applications. In this work, we have explored a multicomponent pathway for the synthesis of a small repertoire of peptoids from simple building blocks by a one-pot Ugi reaction. A variety of novel effective low molecular weight organic gelators have been synthesized, leading to the formation of stable self-assembled aggregates in various solvents such as DMSO, aqueous DMSO, and methanol. Consequently, these aggregates give rise to the creation of organogels and organo/hydrogels. The gels have a minimum gelation concentration (MGC) of 1-2% w/v with high thermal stability. Furthermore, successful encapsulation and release of metronidazole (MZ) were achieved within the gel matrix under physiological pH conditions at 37 °C, ensuring the preservation of its structural and functional properties. The results demonstrated that the release rate of MZ from the organo/hydrogels is contingent on pH, exhibiting a gradual and regulated release in mild alkaline environments. Moreover, the devised system displayed noteworthy antimicrobial efficacy against E. coli, underscoring the potential of these novel low molecular weight organic gels (LMWOGs) as effective drug delivery systems in the pharmaceutical industry. The gel formulations exhibit biocompatibility and negligible cytotoxicity, as evidenced by cell viability studies conducted using the MTT assay.

Abstract
The Ugi four-component condensation in diluted liposomal suspensions was used to prepare pectin-based submicron capsules. A set of isocyanides and aldehydes was used to optimize the synthesis of capsule shells. Modified sugar beet pectin was selected as a natural polymer with pronounced surface activity to create a capsule shell. At first, liposomal composition was optimized in order to select suitable conditions for capsule formation. Then, the wide set of capsules constructed on modified sugar beet pectin scaffold has been synthesized. The choice was determined by level of substitution degree and possible chemical diversity of the modified surface. Detailed characterization of products has been performed for polysaccharide particles with liposomal core prepared with various processing parameters (concentration, cross-linking components, the density of linkage). The chemical structure, average size, polydispersity index, morphology, stability, and cytotoxicity of obtained particles have been investigated in dependence on the shell content. The obtained submicrometer cross-linked capsules (220-240 nm) with controlled colloidal properties showed high stability and low toxicity. Thus, the proposed carriers have a great potential as sustained drug delivery systems for different administration routes.

Abstract
The four-component Ugi condensation reaction has been investigated to assemble chemically crosslinked hydrogels using multivalent star-shaped poly(ethylene glycol) components. The resulting biocompatible hydrogels are highly versatile in composition and function. It is shown that acid, aldehyde, and cyanide components can be varied yielding materials with precise structure and tunable stiffness. Additionally, the resulting hydrogels were proven extremely robust to consecutive drying-swelling cycles. This property was explored to develop a reversible humidity colorimetric sensor gel. Overall, this work demonstrates the application of the four-component Ugi reaction as a powerful tool to quickly generate crosslinked gels with precise control in chemical composition.

Abstract
The defense mechanism of hagfish slime is remarkable considering that hagfish cannot control the concentration of the resulting gel directly; they simply exude a concentrated material into a comparably "infinite" sea of water to form a dilute, sticky, cohesive elastic gel. This raises questions about the robustness of gel formation and rheological properties across a range of concentrations, which we study here for the first time. Across a nearly 100-fold change in concentration, we discover that the gel has similar viscoelastic time-dependent properties with constant power-law exponent (α=0.18±0.01), constant relative damping tanδ=G''/G'≈0.2-0.3, and varying overall stiffness that scales linearly with the concentration (∼c0.99±0.05). The power-law viscoelasticity (fit by a fractional Kelvin-Voigt model) is persistent at all concentrations with nearly constant fractal dimension. This is unlike other materials and suggests that the underlying material structure of slime remains self-similar irrespective of concentration. This interpretation is consistent with our microscopy studies of the fiber network. We derive a structure-rheology model to test the hypothesis that the origins of ultra-soft elasticity are based on bending of the fibers. The model predictions show an excellent agreement with the experiments. Our findings illustrate the unusual and robust properties of slime which may be vital in its physiological use and provide inspiration for the design of new engineered materials. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE Hagfish produce a unique gel-like material to defend themselves against predator attacks. The successful use of the defense gel is remarkable considering that hagfish cannot control the concentration of the resulting gel directly; they simply exude a small quantity of biomaterial which then expands by a factor of 10,000 (by volume) into an "infinite" sea of water. This raises questions about the robustness of gel formation and properties across a range of concentrations. This study provides the first ever understanding of the mechanics of hagfish slime over a very wide range of concentration. We discover that some viscoelastic properties of slime are remarkably constant regardless of its concentration. Such a characteristic is uncommon in most known materials.

Abstract
The emergence of neoteric synthetic routes for materials functionalization is an interesting phenomenon in materials chemistry. In particular, the union of materials chemistry with multicomponent reactions (MCRs) opens a new avenue leading to the realm of highly innovative functionalized architectures with unique features. MCRs have recently been recognized as considerable part of the synthetic chemist's toolbox due to their great efficiency, inherent molecular diversity, atom and pot economy along with operational simplicity. Also, MCRs can improve E-factor and mass intensity as important green chemistry metrics. By rational tuning of the materials, as well as the MCRs, wide ranges of functionalized materials can be produced with tailorable properties that can play important roles in the plethora of applications. To date, there has not reported any exclusive review of a materials functionalization with MCRs. This critical review highlights the state-of-the-art on the one-pot functionalization of carbonaceous and siliceous materials, polysaccharides, proteins, enzymes, synthetic polymers, etc., via diverse kind of MCRs like Ugi, Passerini, Petasis, Khabachnik-Fields, Biginelli, and MALI reactions through covalent or noncovalent manners. Besides the complementary discussion of synthetic routes, superior properties and detailed applicability of each functionalized material in modern technologies are discussed. Our outlook also emphasizes future strategies for this unprecedented area and their use as materials for industrial implementation. With no doubt, MCRs-functionalization of materials bridges the gap between materials science domain and applied chemistry.

Abstract
Pectin-based gelled systems have gained increasing attention for the design of newly developed food products. For this reason, the characterization of such formulas is a necessity in order to present scientific data and to introduce an appropriate finished product to the industry. Various analytical techniques are available for the evaluation of the systems formulated on the basis of pectin and the designed gel. In this paper, general analytical approaches for the characterization of pectin-based gelled systems were categorized into several subsections including physicochemical analysis, visual observation, textural/rheological measurement, microstructural image characterization, and psychorheological evaluation. Three-dimensional trials to assess correlations among microstructure, texture, and taste were also discussed. Practical examples of advanced objective techniques including experimental setups for small and large deformation rheological measurements and microstructural image analysis were presented in more details.

Abstract
Monte Carlo simulation on the basis of the comblike coarse grained nonpolar/polar (NP) model has been carried out to study the polar group saturation effect on physical gelation of amphiphilic polymer solutions. The effects of polar group saturation due to hydrogen bonding or ion bridging on the sol-gel phase diagram, microstructure of aggregates, and chain conformation of amphiphilic polymer solutions under four different solvent conditions to either the nonpolar backbone or the polar side chain in amphiphilic polymer chains have been investigated. It is found that an increase of polar group saturation results in a monotonically decreased critical concentration of gelation point, which can be qualitatively supported by the dynamic rheological measurements on pectin aqueous solutions. Furthermore, various solvent conditions to either the backbone or the side chain have significant impact on both chain conformation and microstructure of aggregates. When the solvent is repulsive to the nonpolar backbone but attractive to the polar side chain, the polymer chains are collapsed, and the gelation follows the mechanism of colloidal packing; at the other solvent conditions, the gelation follows the mechanism of random aggregation.
